Brit Hume announced story coming up now on National Guard docmunents
The "Executive" typewriter predates the Selectric by a couple decades, and the "Executive" model was not an unusual business appliance in its day. I don't have price lists to refer to, but think that at the time the Selectric was introduced, the price of a Selectric and the "Executive" were similar.
Also, the "Executive" model had replaceable type-bars to facilitate making "special" characters. I don't know if IBM offered "superscript th", etc., but they may have. That sort of touch would "add class" to the correspondence of the day, and IBM may have offered parts to do just that. It's been long enough ago that it'll take somebody with an old archive of catalogs or manuals to find out.
I'm not saying the letter was done on an Executive, but to YOUR point that a Selectric couldn't have done it, I agreed. The Selectric lacks proportional font spacing. So, IF it was done on a typewriter, the typewriter was most likely an IBM Executive Model.
"since Kerry got such a tough time about the Swift Vets it's only fair to give GWB a hard time "
This is what goes for journalistic integrity??
A commander's memos to himself vs. Kerry's problems with the most official records??
They are more ignorant than I thought if they put these things on the same plane . . .
But, as you say, they trade a hard time for a hard time, and this is the best accusation against Bush they could find?? Happy days in that case.
I still try to make letters look darker by striking the key harder. ;o)
Your comments are correct -- Executive was fixed and Selectric had the Balls -- Microsoft Word it was and dumb if you ask me.
You still do, while I never did. I tend to over use them, but the one before the "and" was optional while I was growing up & for some reason, I never felt one belonged there.
What exactly is that supposed to prove?
"Did they teach you to put in a double, single or leave it to the discretion of the typist?"
"...That's freakin' nice..."
DAM@ED STRAIGHT!!!!! Wouldn't it be great if those on this forum were ultimately responsible for driving the final nail in Lurch's coffin? That would really give FreeRepublic uncontested legitamacy. Thanks Jim Robb for allowing us the oppurtunity to formulate change. Thanks also to all those who have their resources to affect change. This is your day. I'm trying not to get too giddy about this turn of events. I hope this is all true. So many dims could be nailed with this. This needs to be drawn like a pistol at every oppurtunity to show how the other side is. Expose them for the hypocrates, liars, thieves they are. Bush/Cheney '04!!!!
I am a proud FReeper and I approve this posting.
Boy do I remember that, back in the day. Tabbing to the center and backspacing once for every two letters in the title....
I allegedly a proportional font (according to them),but it don't look like one to me. I guess it proves that they are DUmmies.
"I'm no psychologist but I think there is definitely a bit of "rifle envy" going on out there."
Makes sense to me! A lot of sense.
There is something in the human spirit that yearns to defend and protect. Not only manhood is so directed, but look at the fierce love of motherhood (the non-abortive kind, sigh . . .)
In the modern age, weaklings can survive without physical strength or knowledge of arms. But look how shrill they are -- they are trying to defend their contrarian notions with the only weapons they personally can muster -- shrill statements, lies, . . . So shrill, one must conclude "I think he doest protest too much . . ."
The more others honorably serve at arms (or honorably bear children) the more and more shrill they become . . .
They can't bear silent heroism. It is an indictment. They have to attack and try to destroy it.
Hey, I'm on a roll here! ;)
He was saying that GHWBush would not have asked for special favors...Geraldine did not look good taking up for Barnes...I would not put MY credibility on the line for a man like Barnes....His own daughter thinks he isn't being truthful..Barnes is a pol and a wheeler dealer...You wouldn't want to buy a used car from him.
Having worked for the AF in the 70's, I can guarantee you that they were very skinflint when it came to new typewriters and every other kind of equipment in an office. No way would they have purchased anything extra for Executive typewriters when offices had to almost give blood to get them approved through the supply system.
However, it is the entire combination of factors (as outlined on this and other threads) that make this document highly suspect.
Are you/they, referring to the font?
LOL
I agree Geraldine was bad, but Armey did not help us. He easily could have if he had been prepared.
I've been a word processor (among other things for many years), and using the space after the number of substituting a lower-case "l" for a "1" will also circumvent the superscripted "th" or "st". However, there is a way to bypass it once it superscripts it (or any other Autocorrect action) in the process of typing it. It's hard to describe (and I don't want to help the DNC out!), but I've done it often.
And it doesn't even make sense. Accordiing to that theory (and it was Podhoretz's theory), Kerry should have been given a close look due to Bush getting hounded back in February and March over this stupid Guard issue.
They are just desperate to get ANYTHING on Bush and they keep failing.
I for one just want the DUmmies to tell us their position on "official" documents. Sandy Berger wants to steal them, and Dan Rather wants to forge them.
