That was the first thing I thought of, too.

Not only is CBS liberal, but it can't do basic journalism that I could easily do for the college paper I run (just checking the age of a document is too hard for them...yikes).

That's what happens when you allow yourself to be blinded by a lust for power and by seething, irrational, partisan hatred. That's kind of frightening to me - their hatred for Bush is so intense that they didn't even go through the motions of authenticating what they had - they just ran with it because they were convinced it would torpedo him. That's a level of hatred close to that of the Islamofascists.

CBS reaches millions and millions. And who knows how many people just accept what they say as truth.

Hopefully this episode reduces their ranks significantly.

You signed up today to post that crap! WH did the right thing -- let CBS air the forgeries, and let the people get up in arms that they are forgeries because if the WH said they were people like you would have been calling them liars.

he was "AWOL"

As I stated earlier the Guard wasn't under UCMJ, which is needed for AWOL status. The other thing DU needs to realize is that just because you don't show up, does not mean you are automatically AWOL under UCMJ guidelines.

There's paperwork involved with being declared AWOL. I would like to know the percentage of DU'ers that have any working knowledge of the military?

**Weekly Standard article, opening sentence:
DOCUMENTS CITED Wednesday by 60 Minutes in a widely-publicized expose of George W. Bush's National Guard Service are very likely forgeries, according to several experts on document authenticity and typography**

Wow---my head is reeling. By now Yost may have gotten wind of other news organizations looking into the questions about these documents.

But the business about pursuing Kerry's records...very interesting.

ABC and Terry Moran are trying to distance themselves as far as possible from their brethren in the liberal media. It won't work. They're all snakes.

Freep the CBS Evening News, where Dan Rather's office is based....this gets you to the newsroom:

212-975-3691

Number found on this thread: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1133594/posts

Ask just what "investigation" went into authenticating the memos and whether they will offer an on-air retraction.

Demand they apologize for this EXTREME lapse of journalistic practice and basic skills.

"They really couldn't come out and yell that they were forgeries because it would make them look guilty "

Why is that? At any rate, they didn't have to yell. They could have just phoned up CBS and told them they were forgeries, and that they would expose them as such if CBS used them.

**I typed many term papers and theses on regular typewriters and electric typewriters through the years, and none of them, even the Selectric I used, had the superscript capability. When I had to put in a footnote, I used to have to turn the roller part way down to position it slightly above the rest of the line, then use the number key to denote a footnote number.**

She said the same thing... :)

I've see other posts indicating that the WH received copies from CBS just 24 hours ahead of the 60 Minute hit peace - and then turned around and released copies to all MSM that asked for them

You could be correct by inference that the WH felt these had to be forged, and yhr best to kill it once and for all was to make it available to the whole world

The typefaces did not match.

The IBM Executive came in more than one typeface.

"Choose from 12 distinctive and exclusive type faces the one which best expresses the character of your company and your self. For instance, here are three:

"IBM Bold Face Type is a strong, straightforward type, distoinctly masculine in character.

"IBM Secretarial type is warnm and personal, yet has businesslike dignity

"IBM Mid-Century Type, with its clear-cut lines, is direct, modern, convincing."

I have no idea what the other 9 typefaces look like, nor do I know what special characters might have been made available.

I LOVE that pic :)

I do, too. When I 'borrow' a pic I need to keep better notes so I can give credit.

Thanks to the person who generated that great pic. :^D

Me too. If the White House had caught this before the 60 minutes piece aired, it could have saved a lot of negative publicity. I am afraid that the accusations will float, but the later retractions won't even break public consciousness. That is usually the way these things work.

I beg to differ...CBS attempts to discredit Bush with obviously forged documents? And Ben Barnes own daughter says he's lying about the supposed favors he did to get Bush into the Texas Air National Guard?

When this breaks out into the MSM it will be a huge scandal, and can only play to Bush's benefit. It will totally discredit CBS, and should also have the positive effect of forever stopping the ridiculous obsession of the Democrat's/MSM over Bush's National Guard service.

>>I did subscript and superscript on my typewriters in the 70's, but had to do so by slightly turning the paper roll bar clockwise or counterclockwise<<

Good point. I did, too. At that time there was a half-ratchet feature on some IBMs. However the size of letters did not change.
