New Questions On Bush Guard Duty

CBS) The military records of the two men running for president have become part of the political arsenal in this campaign – a tool for building up, or blowing up, each candidate’s credibility as America's next commander-in-chief.

While Sen. Kerry has been targeted for what he did in Vietnam, President Bush has been criticized for avoiding Vietnam by landing a spot in the Texas Air National Guard - and then failing to meet some of his obligations.

Did then-Lt. Bush fulfill all of his military obligations? And just how did he land that spot in the National Guard in the first place? Correspondent Dan Rather has new information on the president’s military service – and the first-ever interview with the man who says he pulled strings to get young George W. Bush into the Texas Air National Guard.

But 60 Minutes has obtained a number of documents we are told were taken from Col. Killian's personal file. Among them, a never-before-seen memorandum from May 1972, where Killian writes that Lt. Bush called him to talk about "how he can get out of coming to drill from now through November."

Lt. Bush tells his commander "he is working on a campaign in Alabama…. and may not have time to take his physical." Killian adds that he thinks Lt. Bush has gone over his head, and is "talking to someone upstairs."

Col. Killian died in 1984. 60 Minutes consulted a handwriting analyst and document expert who believes the material is authentic.

Memo #4 is dated 18 Aug 1973. That is a Saturday. Not saying it isn't possible that he was working on a Saturday, but he mentions several things in the memo as "today". Such as "Harris gave me a message today from GRP" and "Austin is not happy today either".

I wish to expand on my previous comment, as I may have been a bit too opaque.

There are many people with many motivations floating around, some of them within the Kerry campaign.

There are as many agendas, even within the Democratic party, as there are campaign workers.

Think about the fact that there have been recent hiring by Kerry of many Clintonites.

A response to a earlier thread pointed out the IBM Selectric, which were a prevalent typewriter at the time, were capable of this type print. The individual posting used this type of print in a weekly newsletter they were publishing (at the time) so they claim.

I typed all my high school and college papers on an IBM Selectric acquired after the Navy modernized office equipment at the 32nd St Naval Station in San Diego. That was 1973-1976. The machine was refurbished after many years in government service.

This may have been mentioned and may not be important but in looking at my husband's ANG documents from 1971/1972, I noted the following:

all documents are dated like: 4 May 1972 1 August 1973
Bush'w documents are : 04 May 1972 01 August 1973

If you look at the Bush docs that Bush released, none of those documents appear to contain any memorandums with the reduced font superscript when typing something like 111th. If you notice the non-superscripted memos from Killian's file, there is always a space between the numbers and the letters, i.e., 111 th. If you use a modern word processor it will automatically turn the th into a reduced font size superscript if it immediately follows the numbers.

If the reduced font was available, why is it that the only documents that have them are the recently released Killian documents and then only half of those contain the superscript and the other half contain the non-supercript but have a space between the letters and the numbers?

This is all very interesting but has anyone any details on how these memo's just appeared at the Pentagon. I for one would like to see an explanation of how they showed up after all documents concerning National Guard were delivered months ago. Of course billing records can appear out of the blue in the White House.

In addition to the "Selectric Composer," the IBM Executive Model typewriters used proportional spacing. These predate the Selectric, do not have "the ball," and have a moving carriage.

I am looking for keyboard layouts for the IBM Executive, but doubt anything will turn up. I do have a few old (Royal) typewriters here, and they have a few "odd" characters on single kets, "Circle-C" "Circle-R" "Superscript TM" "1/2" "1/4" "3/4", from memory.

Every line break is the same. Every space is the same, and all of the text is printed perfectly on each line. Granted, "the original" looks to have undergone some 'aging', but there's no way that document originated in 1972. It may have been copied into Word, but it didn't come out of a typewriter. Howlin......I have Paint Shop Pro 8. And there is a program in PSP that allows you to 'age' the look of paper. It's neat. So, it's not impossible to make a new piece of paper look old (er).

Might the Kerry discharge be a partially-preprinted form, with the personal indivudual stuff typed in later?

That is certainly possible. The DD214 itself is a pre-printed form, of course. The information in proportional fonts is general information that would have applied to a lot of people being processed out of the same OCS. All of the information specific to the individual is typed in the evenly spaced font.

So it is, indeed, possible that the common proportional font information was typed onto the form once using a more sophisticated machine, and this became the Master Form. Copies of this pre-typed form could then be used for each individual record.

This would make sense. In fact, it would make very little sense to forge the common proportionally typed information later, because it has nothing to do with John Kerry in particular.

All true. I saw the show and figured something was not on the up-and-up because they put this story on Wednesday night.

If CBS had wanted to bring real attention to it and to their methods, the show would have played on Sunday's "60 Minutes."

This way they got the lies into the public ledger, but the trail has been obscured.

# The almost 300 Navy veterans who have spoken out against Kerry also are highly decorated, some even having been prisoners of war.

# Kerry's own writings contradict several of the stories of his heroism, including the rescue stories of former Army Green beret Jim Rassman, and Kerry's Purple Hearts.

# After Kerry returned from Vietnam, he helped form Vietnam Veterans Against the War, which was funded and later supported by communist organizations bent on the defeat of the United States.

# Many of the charges Kerry made against our soldiers in Senate hearings have since been debunked - yet he has never retracted them even after learning that those statements were used by North Vietnamese prison officials to demoralize and torture our prisoners of war.

# VVAW leaders traveled to Hanoi and Paris to negotiate with the leaders of North Vietnam, without authorization from our government, and at home held meetings to consider assassinating public officials and promoting mutiny among our military.

I have read practically every single story about these "documents" and I have not yet read that the White House gives them any credibility; I was under the impression that they were discussing the documents "found" at the Pentagon concerning his flight records.

That being said, I agree with you 100 percent about "things going on." Not only are there "recent arrivals" at the Kerry campaign whose allegiance may, in fact, be to the Clintons, a government-in-waiting, if you will, but there are still people at the Pentagon, political appointees who Bill Clinton gave permanent jobs on his way out the door, who have access to most of what we are seeing and/or hearing.

Your point is taken, but the bulk of that work was spent in creating justified output, that is, the text formed a nice smooth margin on the left and right. I never used that typewriter, but I would imagine that if one was not concerned with right-justifying the margin, you could merely type away.

The military changes it. Back in the mid-late 90s I remember having to use 01JAN98 format. Then at the turn of the century they made me use 01JAN2001 instead. Depends on what the regs say during the time. Check his other stuff. Date format is a persistant thing. I know I kept doing it for years after I left ROTC.

Very good point. I thought it was odd how these documents suddenly "turned up" at the Pentagon. Now, I think we know how that came about.

I will make a further claim, based on some chance observations. The forger used OpenOffice, in a feeble attempt to throw people off.

In the end it is all a question of moral relativism for the Left. To the mind of the Leftist and their party, portraying Bush as a Liar, exonerates Clinton's lies. Portraying Bush as AWOL exonerates all of Kerry's military recklessness, including his anti-war activities and his voting record.

For proof of this look no further than the way former Presidents were "proved" to have had extramarital affairs while in office a la Clinton during the Monica-made-him-do-it scandal.
