CHICAGO (CBS 2) Illinois' senate race is heating up with both Democrat Barack Obama and new Republican candidate Alan Keyes in town pressing the flesh and warming up to voters.
The Republican candidate in this race may just be getting started, but according to an exclusive new CBS 2/Newsradio 780 poll, Keyes has a long way to go. 67 percent of Illinois voters prefer Democrat Obama; 28 percent would choose Keyes.
Keyes and his supporters were feeling the heat of the August sun as he announced for U.S. Senate at a crowded rally in Arlington Heights. Our exclusive voter opinion survey shows Obama generating another kind of heat.
Obama's lead in our CBS 2/Newsradio 780 Survey was most pronounced among women voters, 74 percent to 21percent for Keyes. Among men, it was 59 percent to 36 percent.
There was no surprise in strongly Democratic Chicago: 79 percent for Obama, 16 percent for Keyes.
But in the heavily Republican collar counties, it was Obama with 62 percent, Keyes with 34 percent. . Even downstate, 56 percent of those polled preferred Obama to 38 percent for Keyes. The results were almost the same in rural areas: 57 percent to 39 percent.
Virtually every Democrat we talked to favored Obama. Among independent voters, 64 percent chose Obama, 30 percent chose Keyes. Even among Republicans, 27 percent defected to Obama, 67 percent chose Keyes.
White voters went 62 percent to 32 percent for Obama; black voters by a margin of 89 percent to 10 percent.
The poll was conducted by Survey USA this past Friday and Saturday. It is accurate to within plus or minus four percentage points.
SEAN HANNITY, CO-HOST: Ambassador, what do you think about your opponent?
KEYES: Well, I thought, given all the hype, that there was some substance there. Today, however, after saying he wanted six debates, that he'd debate anybody that the Republicans put up, I'm told today he had a press conference, somebody told me now he wants to reduce it to two, ah, to four. I was just told it was two. He says and claims, and everybody claims, he has such national stature and ability. I step onto the scene, and he's running for the ropes at the side of the arena.
It seems to me we may have a situation here of all hype and no handle. We've got somebody who's like the Wizard of Oz in the famous picture: big head projected by the media, full of hype, sound, and glory, but when it comes down to it, he doesn't want to face the test.
HANNITY: Yeah.
When he embraces an extremist position on abortion that countenances even the murder of living young children outside the womb, Barack Obama abandons the principles of our Declaration and destroys the foundations of our national union
Excellent post, it says it all about Allan Keyes and what he stands for.
And then I looked at his record, and what did I find?
[laughter]
I found, wait, I found somebody who, as we would expect from the kind of liberalism he professes, has never seen a spending bill he couldn't find some excuse for, and has never seen a tax increase he didn't like.
We find somebody who, in the tradition of a lot of the liberals, would rather that our children were educated in schools controlled by impersonal bureaucracy than in schools under the influence and control of the parents who love them and care about their future.
[cheering, applause]
I found someone who appears to believe that even when a criminal has entered into the sacred precinct of your home with intentions you couldn't possibly fathom, you don't have the right to defend your life and the lives of the people in your family!
[cheering, applause]
And as you might expect in someone who won't defend the right of citizens under the Second Amendment to defend themselves, he doesn't seem to understand the necessity that when terrorists that when terrorists and others come against the people of this country, the President of the United States does not have the right to neglect intelligence that suggests there are threats and dangers to the American people!
[cheering, applause]
And I'll tell you clearly and unequivocally. By the time I got through those parts of his record, I was absolutely convinced that SOMEBODY had to run against Barack Obama!
[cheering applause]
But I'll also tell you quite clearly and unequivocally that if those had been the only points of difference between us, it would not have been me!
[laughter]
What finally caught my eye, however, and what we have to spend some time thinking through so that we will understand, not just the significance of the decision I have taken, but the significance of this election overall, what we have to look at is what finally arrested my attention and forced me to consider whether I not only had the opportunity to oppose him, but the obligation.
And that was when I learned that he had actually, in April 2002, apparently cast a vote that would continue to allow live birth abortions in the state of Illinois.
[crowd: "Boo!"]
Now, wait a minute. And we have to understand. I hope everyone here will understand what I'm talking about. We are talking about a situation in which, in the course of an abortion procedure, a child has been born alive--is out of the womb, breathing and living on its own--and he cast a vote against the idea that we should not stand by and let that child die!
Outright lie.
He has been in the state since he announced. He's done solid media appearances every day.
You're a troll.
Thank you for your eloquent comments. They almost seem out of place on this thread.
With friends like these, conservatism and liberty need no enemies.
As I said, Keyes Torie just isn't the kind of advocate that does much for me in the public square, except annoy.
When has the Republican party of Illinois been anything at all? Not in my life time, and I'm pushing 50. Even Everett Dirksen always went along to get along.
LOL! Funny... and true.
Osama would be wise to duck them.
I never thought of myself as a 'uniter' not a 'divider'. I will proceed with utmost caution. Thank you for the heads-up.
Matthew 16:19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."
How? I've never been polled. How can you accurately measure the populace? Internet poll like the pop-ups that I see ---- those reach people like me. Telephone surveys? What people answer their phones? Man on the street poll? Magazine polls?
Results of polls should report on who was polled, how the poll was done. They should even be more honest and say for example: "of those people answering their phones between 8:00am and 8:00pm, 58% plan to vote for Kerry...."
Results of polls should report on who was polled, how the poll was done.
Well --- obviously a poll done one day after a person agrees to run in an election is not going to be reliable in any way.
Also any poll done by part of the media --- such as CBS -- can be scrapped because the media obviously has become such a part of the democrat party --- they have an agenda in their poll results.
Well --- obviously a poll done one day after a person agrees to run in an election is not going to be reliable in any way.
