A domestic centerpiece of the Bush/GOP agenda for a second Bush term is getting rid of the Internal Revenue Service, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.
The Speaker of the House will push for replacing the nation's current tax system with a national sales tax or a value added tax, Hill sources tell DRUDGE.
"People ask me if Im really calling for the elimination of the IRS, and I say I think thats a great thing to do for future generations of Americans," Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert explains in his new book, to be released on Wednesday.
"Pushing reform legislation will be difficult. Change of any sort seldom comes easy. But these changes are critical to our economic vitality and our economic security abroad," Hastert declares in SPEAKER: LESSONS FROM FORTY YEARS IN COACHING AND POLITICS.

I fail to understand how people get excited about a 30% national sales tax on top of what will need to be a 10% state sales tax.
So you don't mind spending a month every year figuring what you owe, and the other eleven worrying about whether, in the opinion of the IRS, you did it right?
Actually, a lot of immigrants, illegal, etc, would still land themselves exempt, because they buy a lot of things under the radar of that tax. Garage Sales, their own peoples delivery grocery trucks, that do not pay taxes. There is an entire segment of the population under the general population who function quite nicely outside of the laws of this country.
I don't ever remember seeing a number as high as 40% on nationa/state sales taxes combined - but I do agree that a flat tax would be much better IMHO.
The only way that will ever happen is if (1) we get a supermajority in both houses of congress and (2) Dubya decides that it's time to do it.
Unfortunately, our President, God love him, has not seemed to be on board with reductions in size of government to this point. We can hope and pray he's just been fooling the libs.
Frankly I think that even though I loathe them all...I'd like to see algore's, heinzscary, & Mr. Ed's taxes reduced.
I rather doubt it will happen....but I'd vote for a rock if they would implement two things....Abolishment of the IRS, ( replaced with some sort of NST, FLAT TAX, or the like. ) & absolute term limits.
FRegards,
Wow, nothing like posting OLD NEWS.
Tax consumption and not the creation of wealth.
National Sales Tax NOW!!!
And that is exactly the way that a lot of politicians want it.
Sounds good, but the Republicans....will let this slip through their fingers too.....
Good ideas, but short on hard ball politics.
I agree with this statement. The IRS can't totally go away unless payroll taxes are eliminated and someone will still need to police the compliance and collection of any other form of tax. Why does it matter if its a VAT, NST or a variation of the income tax? Unless government spending is cut, the total tax they'll need to collect will be the same.
Why does it matter if they take it from me as a dollar bill or 4 quarters, multiplied by several thousand, if they still take the same amount of money. It's like not wanting to paint the livingroom and arguing with your wife whether it will be green or tan.
Dan
I think they would prefer to keep the IRS AND have a national sales tax.
Let me add a few more pleases to your list - but I'll do it mentally, so as not to bring down the server....
NO VATs they sound cool but inpractice they don't work too well and they allow the govt. to raise them way to easily. Give me a Flat Tax or an NRST(my preference because it abolishes the IRS). Either way a Flat Tax or an NRST is better than what we have now!
I said Bush need to elimenate the IRS ans start a Sales Tax.
Hope this is true.
Where did you get your numbers? It seems a little high.
The most exciting thing about flat tax is that it eliminates some non-productive work from our economy. Tax Preparation and Tax avoidance strategies are NOT productive at all. They don't add to our GDP. Those who work in this segment will have to shift to real productive work which should create a boom. Another thing about the flat tax, you no longer get penalized for risking capital. That alone would give a huge boost to our economy. Eliminating the IRS, tax code enforcement and court time should really cut down our government expenditures.
If this rumor is true, wait for people (way smarter than me) to analyze the pros and cons of the NST.
