According to one of his friends, he was contemplating becoming a Muslim because he loved Saudi Arabia so much, the people and their culture. If he thought it would save him from being targeted by terrorists, he was sadly wrong. Ten years in the country didn't buy him safety. He was chosen simply because he is an American. He could have been a Muslim and that wouldn't have cut any ice with his captors. His sin was being American.
