Thanks for the links. I wonder if either of these organizations have fought to keep our crosses unmoved across the USA? This sudden "separation of church and state" and rulings in favor of the minority (or oftentimes individuals) is contrary to the very concepts that formed our government. We're on the fast track to the repeal and/or revise our Bill of Rights Amendment I to reflect the prohibition of our freedom to exercise religion eventually (except, of course, for Muslims).

FBI Warns of Eco-Terrorism Threat

Wednesday, June 09, 2004

WASHINGTON — The FBI warned law enforcement agencies of the potential for criminal activity in response to a call for action in support of a convicted eco-terrorist, according to the weekly bulletin issued by the agency and obtained by Fox News.

"Supporters of anarchist and convicted arsonist Jeff Luers (search) have designated Saturday, June 12, 2004 an 'International Day of Action and Solidarity with Jeff 'Free' Luers,' alternatively entitled 'J12,'" the FBI said in the bulletin.

"J12 events are planned in Eugene, Oregon; Olympia, Washington; San Francisco and Modesto, California; Lawrence, Kansas; Morgantown, West Virginia; Worcester, Massachusetts; Portland, Maine; and Lake Worth, Florida."

Luers is from Eugene, Ore. According to the FBI, he is widely celebrated as a martyr within anarchist and extremist animal rights and environmental circles.

On June 16, 2000, he was convicted for his involvement in an Earth Liberation Front (search)-style arson at a truck dealership and an attempted arson at an oil company in Eugene. He is serving a 22-year prison sentence — the longest, according to the FBI, ever handed down for eco-terrorist actions in the U.S.

The ELF is a radical group of environmentalists that has claimed responsibility for various acts of arson and vandalism and is listed as the FBI's No. 1 domestic terrorism priority.

"Luers' notoriety could potentially inspire autonomous ELF cells to carry out symbolic actions in solidarity with Luers against traditional targets, such as SUV (search) dealerships, lumber logging facilities, and residential construction sites in environmentally sensitive areas during J12 events," the FBI noted.

"While the FBI has no specific information regarding planned terrorist actions to coincide with J12 events, law enforcement officers should be alert to indicators of possible terrorist planning, including suspicious surveillance of targeted industries, such as SUV dealerships, animal research laboratories and construction sites," the FBI said in the bulletin.

The Earth Liberation Front has claimed responsibility for a string of arsons in Detroit, Philadelphia and San Diego, where a fire last year destroyed a 206-unit apartment complex under construction, causing $50 million worth of damage.

Shame, I don't see Georgia on the list.

It might be an idea to start a collection for a "Body Bag fund", we could then send these fools the body bags as soon as they plan an action.

Protesting is an American 'way'.

Insanity should not be allowed on the street.

Easy, lock them up or bag them, no loss either way.

My opinion.

This is pre-school training for future jihadi shaheed candidates. Soon we will see gullible little children accepting insignificant gifts as an inducement to transport a bomb into a crowd and push the button. Allah must have run out of virgins. I'm sure a plate of tasty cookies would do the job for these tykes.

Associated Press
Thursday, June 10, 2004; Page A12

ROME, June 9 -- An Italian prosecutor said Wednesday that he had provided U.S. authorities with transcripts of phone calls between terror suspects, including one transcript that reportedly refers to a woman ready to carry out a chemical attack in the United States.

Two terror suspects were arrested late Monday in Milan, including Rabei Osman Sayed Ahmed, an Egyptian believed to have been behind the March 11 train bombings in Madrid, said Milan prosecutor Maurizio Romanelli.

In one of the intercepted conversations, Ahmed refers to a woman ready to carry out a chemical attack in the United States, the ANSA news agency reported.

When asked about the content of the transcripts, Romanelli pointed to news reports that mention the alleged chemical plot. He did not dispute the reports, but he said he would not comment further on the content of the wiretaps.

The wiretaps refer to "small groups ready to carry out suicide attacks," he said. In most cases, the likely location of the attacks was Iraq, he said. The prosecutor gave no further details.

Police arrested Ahmed, along with the man he was staying with, a Palestinian identified as Yahia Payumi.

Viviana Bossi, defense attorney for the two suspects, said Wednesday that her clients were unclear about the exact charges against them. "They deny they are terrorists," she said.

Authorities say Ahmed is a key suspect in the Madrid attacks. Investigators have blamed the bombings, which killed 191 people, on Islamic radicals with possible links to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network.

Italian officials suspect that Ahmed was planning further attacks, and they tipped off Belgian counterparts who arrested 15 people late Monday and early Tuesday in coordinated raids. At least one of the 15 -- most of them Palestinian, Jordanian, Moroccan and Egyptian -- had been in contact with Ahmed, Romanelli said.

The AGI news agency reported Wednesday that the suspects might have been planning an attack on the Paris subway system. Ahmed was recorded asking one of those arrested in Belgium about the Paris Metro and security there, AGI said, citing police sources.

Asked about a report in the Milan daily Corriere della Sera that the suspects were planning an attack against a NATO base in Belgium, Romanelli said investigators had no information on specific targets.

In Spain, police arrested six Spaniards in the northern Asturias region Wednesday and accused them of supplying the dynamite used in the Madrid attack. The suspects included the security guard of a coal mine from which the 440 pounds of explosives used in the bombings were stolen, Interior Minister Jose Antonio Alonso said.

"Wouldn't it be nice if there could be a "do-over" on the creation of Israel....give them France instead?"

No. I wasn't saying that. It would be like trying to get inside the heads of the German people that supported Hitler and the situation that led to his rise after World War I and then saying maybe we shouldn't have won World War I.

In a sense, these years we live in are the big "do-over" for the die we cast after World War I. The West (Britain and France at the time) simply passed the Arabs from one tyrant (the Ottoman Turks) to another (monarchs and dictators of our own creation). So advocates of "political Islam" have positioned themselves as the path to liberty from these oppressors over the decades that followed (first the Muslim Brotherhood, and then in recent years, groups such as Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Qaeda, and now Sadr). If we do not give them another way out (democracy), then the die is cast.

As for Israel, even Ariel Sharon, father of the settlements and one of the most hawkish Prime Ministers in Israeli history, understands that it is not possible to remain in *all* the territories. Certainly not Gaza. And even parts of Samaria. However, Israeli democracy is highly factionalized and polarized and it makes decision-making of this magnitude extremely difficult. But Israel is not going anywhere. The Arabs deep down really don't care about the Palestinians (any more than ten years ago the African-American community really liked or gave a flip about OJ as a person - - they saw him before as a "sell-out"), but the Arabs are projecting all their historical frustrations on the Palestinian situation (why the word "occupation" strikes such a deep chord in the region). That is why it has to be resolved and, as this President has been the first to declare, the State of Palestine must be created, side by side with Israel, to give the Palestinians a nation where they can be free.

But Israeli roots in the Mideast go back three thousand years.
And you cannot uproot something that is eternal.

Israel and Palestine are not "either-or", they are "both-and", and everyone (who is sane and willing to face reality) knows the basic outlines of the borders. The Israelis are even building a separation wall along these lines. The only question is whether it will take a war unlike any other for the die-hards on both sides to be convinced that they have to abandon their illusions (for one side a Mideast without a Palestinian State, and for the other, a Mideast without a Jewish State).

Otherwise, it will not be for us or them to draw the lines we failed to draw after the first World War, but for the survivors of the next World War to draw the very same lines that could have been drawn now - - before rather than after a holocaust.

It can be an excruciating process to get dreamers to let go of their dreams.

"My Conclusion

Based on information that is in addition to what has been presented, my conclusion is that war with North Korea could occur by the end of the summer or in that time period. Many of the US forces needed for this are already in place, more are being dispatched in surge.

I also conclude that such a war would quickly become massively nuclear and also chemical and bacteriological after we first use conventional weapons to attack North Korea's nuclear sites.

Seoul could be lost, as could Tokyo.  But as many as 100 U.S. nuclear weapons might be used to keep this from happening."

Major security lapse:

CONTINENTAL WORKERS ACCUSED OF SMUGGLING COCAINE

POSTED: 8:00 am EDT June 10, 2004

NEWARK, N.J. -- Federal agents on Wednesday charged six Continental Airlines employees with smuggling hundreds of pounds of cocaine into the country through Newark Liberty International Airport.

The workers were baggage handlers at the airport who used their positions to divert suitcases of cocaine from customs inspections, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The workers also laundered millions of dollars in profits by taking suitcases filled with cash out of the country, again using their positions to bypass inspection, authorities said.

The employees traveled to Miami, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and elsewhere to import the drugs and export the cash.

Continental workers at airports in Miami and Puerto Rico have also been implicated in related schemes.

The Newark ring operated from January 2000 to August 2003, using large Samsonite suitcases containing 15 to 17 kilograms (33 to 37 pounds) of cocaine, according to a Customs Enforcement complaint filed Wednesday.

"We do expect more arrests," Thomas Manifase, deputy special agent in charge of the Customs Enforcement office in Newark.

The agency, part of the Department of Homeland Security, acknowledged that the case highlights vulnerabilities in the transportation system.

"Employees like this pose a significant threat to our national security," Manifase said. "Homeland Security is aggressively pursuing this case."

"This was no mom-and-pop organization. They were pretty sophisticated," he said.

They employed lookouts and retagged suitcases of cocaine coming from overseas so they would go to domestic luggage carousels. "It would never even come to our uniformed officers," Manifase said.

As a result, the agency is trying to increase surveillance of baggage unloading at major airports, he said.

He said Continental Airlines assisted in the investigation, which was conducted by Customs Enforcement and the FBI.

A spokesman for the Houston-based airline, Rahsaan Johnson, said employees accused in the drug ring have been removed from the work schedule and their status is under review.

Of the six Newark employees, one remains at large: Sandy Francisco Hernandez, 28, of Union City.

Arturo Martinez, 26, was arrested at his home in Kearny. The others were arrested at the airport: Cristian Antonio Ramirez, 27, of Passaic; Ramon Emilio Urena, 28, of Passaic; Antonio Reynoso, 50, of Jersey City, and William Roman, 37, of Jersey City.

All face up to life in prison if convicted on the charge, conspiracy to traffic more than 5 kilograms of cocaine.

Ten people, including four Continental employees, were charged Tuesday in a cocaine conspiracy indictment issued in Miami.

Continental employees Jose Abreu, Rosa Abreu and Pedro Perez were taken into custody in Miami, and Marisela Diaz was arrested in Puerto Rico. Prosecutors had no information on whether the Abreus were related.

The Miami workers "had, at one time, assisted the Newark crew," Manifase said.

In a related Miami case last year, Alberto Gonzalez, a Continental Airlines employee in Newark, and Miami International Airport employee Lucia Robinson were sent to prison on drug conspiracy charges for a 154-pound load seized in four suitcases at the Miami airport and an 11-pound load stashed on a boat in Miami.

Robinson was caught in uniform trying to smuggle the suitcases past security in July 2003.

Gonzalez was sentenced to 24 years and Robinson to less than four years.

Sentencing is pending for Alex Lujan, who was stopped while towing the boat and trailer destined for New York in August 2003.

Co-defendant Luis Ortiz was sentenced to nine years after making the flight from Miami to Newark and meeting Gonzalez on the ground without realizing the cocaine had been seized.

Pakistan Commander Escapes Attack, 10 Dead

June 10, 2004 — By Aamir Ashraf

KARACHI (Reuters) - A Pakistani army commander narrowly escaped assassination on Thursday when a gun and bomb attack on his convoy killed 10 people, in what officials saw as a response to a bloody assault on militants near the Afghan border.

Gunmen ambushed a convoy escorting Karachi army corps commander Lieutenant-General Ahsan Saleem Hayat on a main road in Karachi, but he went on to attend a provincial government meeting, police and army officials said.

"It is a terrorist attack aimed at destabilizing the country," Army spokesman Major-General Shaukat Sultan said.....more
