The Russian Armed Forces will hold major exercises in June 2004, acting
Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov told President Vladimir Putin.

Thanks, Cindy. Nice work!
Thanks!
I agree.
I think it would have had to be the first thread which started in October and ran past 10,000 posts I think.
Yes, _Jim is a pretty tough defender of the view that the blackout was not the result of terrorists.
I don't think you are paranoid. Did they tell you what it was? Was it there the next time you went by?
Anybody NOT holding military exercises? Sheesh!
What does everyone think about these planned manuevers as compared to the Russian's last militray tests? At first glance and with my fuzzy memory on this, these upcoming excursions seem to be air-based rather than sea-based as in Russia's past manuevers.
You're preaching to the choir, JP.
>>With all due respect, I disagree with Steve Emerson. The Abu Al Hafs al Masri Brigade was involved in the Madrid bombings. I think that demonstrates their operational capabilities.<<
As I said previously, I was just reporting what I heard in a Lisa Myers report on NBC.
My old neighborhood of Mira Mesa, CA was affectionately known as "Manila Mesa". We didn't have many stray animals in the area. The locals said the most popular recipe book in the area was, "101 Ways to Wok a Dog".
I'm having a new kitchen put in next month and I expect to spend three weeks in a local hotel during the construction. I guess that makes me a "meth maker."
>>He said it is incorrect that we ever funded ObL.
That's sortof like a major fudge.
The Saudis matched us dollar for dollar in all those billions.
The Saudis used the money any way they wanted.
We were forced by the Pakistanis to go thru them. They chose the people Saudi wanted and the Paki favs, the most radical the most nutcase.
So technically, yes, we didn't fund him, because the money was handed to the Pakistanis, and they, after taking their cut, handed it to their faves, which prolly wasn't Osama but the Saudis.
So, technically, no, but why has all public discourse turned to such legalistic hair splitting. We were proud of supporting the muj in the 80's.

A fine example of how so many people in this country are completely braindead about terrorism in their own back yards.
Ships head west for Aurora 26.05.04 10:48
The largest commitment of Royal Navy personnel since the liberation of Iraq 12 months ago has been sent west for huge war games in the Atlantic.
Eighteen warships, led by Fleet flagship HMS Invincible, are taking part in Exercise Aurora, stretching along the eastern seaboard of the United States to the Gulf of Mexico.
Among the ships deployed are helicopter carrier HMS Ocean, assault ship HMS Albion and Type 23 frigates HM ships Marlborough and Sutherland, all sailing in small packets to meet up in Norfolk, Virginia.
The linchpin of the deployment is Exercise Rapid Alliance, involving two American carrier battlegroups and a US Marine Corps task force, staging mock invasions.
Also joining the war games are ships and personnel from Canada, Holland, Germany, Peru, Norway, Italy, Denmark, France and Australia.
Aurora involves 5,900 British service personnel, including those involved with GR7 Harriers from 3(F) Squadron RAF, which has deployed alongside 801 Naval Air Squadron in HMS Invincible.
This deployment will demonstrate the flexibility of the aircraft, and on a personal note it provides a tremendous start to my time in command of Invincible, said Capt Neil Morisetti, who took charge of the carrier days before she sailed.
Mine countermeasures vessels HM ships Pembroke, Walney, Sandown and Middleton left Portsmouth in late April, shepherded by RFA Sir Bedivere, which is serving as their command ship for the exercise.
Their slow speed meant they had to depart before the core of the Aurora force, which left port earlier this month.
MCMV force commander Cdr Peter Williams said the three-month tour of duty looked to be hugely attractive.
Its a rare opportunity to work alongside our American colleagues on their own turf. There are several exciting port visits as well as a stimulating large-scale exercise.
Beyond the force gets down to business in the exercises, visits by various vessels in the Aurora task force are lined up for the Azores, Bermuda, Virginia, Massachusetts, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, New York and Louisiana.
Aurora will also prove a further test for new assault ship HMS Albion, which was declared ready for front-line operations following winter exercises off Norway earlier this spring.

My group builds the sortie software for NATO. Once the wall came down, we had mix of east and west Germans in the room. One of the former east Germans looked at a practice training exercise and asked, "Who the hell is targeting Germany?". We responded by creating an imaginary set of islands west of Europe in the Atlantic. Various features of the real target area were transplanted and renamed. The NATO pilots were then able to create practice sorties to the imaginary island and still have a realistic set of distances, targets, refuel rendezvous and defensive elements. Until we invented the imaginary area, it was like walking on eggshells in a multi-national NATO military environment.
Yes I wonder why do they now claim responsibility for flight 587? Are they just trying to boost up their terrorist resume or is there some reason to have not said anything for 2 1/2 years?
There were some very unusual incidents on that day. I will have to look up that thread.

[SCI] Worst Outbreak of Storms Across Central U.S. - Saturday 5/29!
"This weekend may be the worst outbreak of severe weather for the entire year..." - The WX Channel
I just caught the tail end of the Storm Watch section that always comes on at 50 after the hour on The Weather Channel.
The Meteorologist was discussing a super strong weather system that is coming in from the Pacific and it is likely going to cause outbreak of very severe storms across Midwest USA from Texas all the way north towards Canada border.
He said that these storms should be forming in that area by Saturday and it could be widespread! He thought this outbreak would be very, very bad and emphasized that this thing could bring the worst storms for entire year (WOW).
So keep this in mind as you make plans and stay safe!
