U.S. journalist wants war to failEditors believe it would ensure 'evil' Bush ousted

A British reporter says a U.S. journalist in Baghdad told him she wants to see more Iraqis die so President Bush will be thrown out of office in November.

Toby Harnden, Middle East correspondent for the London Daily Telegraph, said he engaged in the conversation while taking a break by the pool at the Al-Hamra Hotel in the Iraqi capital.

In an opinion piece for the Spectator magazine of Britain, Harnden said at poolside he "was accosted by an American magazine journalist of serious accomplishment and impeccable liberal credentials."

The American journalist told Harnden she had been disturbed by his argument that Iraqis were better off now than under Saddam Hussein.

Harnden said he heard from her the usual "script" from antiwar activists, "no WMD, no 'imminent threat' (though the point was to deal with Saddam before such a threat could emerge), a diversion from the hunt for bin Laden, enraging the Arab world, etc."

But the American then came to her point, Hernden said.

"Not only had she 'known' the Iraq war would fail but she considered it essential that it did so because this would ensure that the 'evil' George W. Bush would no longer be running her country.

"Her editors back on the East Coast were giggling, she said, over what a disaster Iraq had turned out to be. 'Lots of us talk about how awful it would be if this worked out.'"

"Startled by her candor," said Herndon, "I asked whether thousands more dead Iraqis would be a good thing."

The British journalist said, "She nodded and mumbled something about Bush needing to go."

He then suggest to her that by this logic another Sept. 11 attack, on about Sept. 11, would be perfect for pushing up John Kerry's poll numbers.

"Well, that's different — that would be Americans," she said, haltingly, according to Harnden. "I guess I'm a bit of an isolationist."

In his column, Harnden then commented on the "moral degeneracy of these sentiments," concluding with:

"Whatever we thought about the war before it was launched, it is imperative that the forces of Arab nationalism and Islamism that now threaten to destroy Iraq are defeated. If America fails in Iraq it will be all of us in the West, not just Bush, who will suffer. But those who would be most in peril, of course, would be the Iraqis, who deserve better than to have their country treated as an electoral playground by the American Left or Right. To wish otherwise is as sick as the grins on the faces of the Abu Ghraib torturers."

Let's not forget he 'opened' China and got us out of Vietnam.

What a wonderful example of a great anti-Communist.

And took us off the gold standard. Turning our paper into pure belief.

There's a special circle of hell for people like him.

My boss is a very unpolitical person, but the other day he said to me "You know this country is headed for a civil war". It's pretty bad when even non-political people are noticing it.

MIDI - SOUNDS OF SILENCE

Hello patriots, my friends…I have some bad news once again
You won't believe what they've been doing...our great nation they've been screwing

There’s a lesson…we cannot trust Democrats…sewer rats
We hear the sounds of treason

They would sell their country out…of that, you should have no doubt
They would abdicate our freedom…it’s in their writing, you should read ‘em

There’s a lesson that we cannot trust the Democrats…sewer rats
We hear the sounds of treason

Their hatred of the USA…they have been showing everyday
They all disdain our Constitution…it is time for retribution

There’s a lesson…we…cannot trust Democrats…sewer rats
We hear the sounds of treason

Incrementally they gain…it’s a plan that is insane
If they cannot be president...they hope we fail, that's evident

With defense, we can’t trust Democrats…(sewer rats)
We hear the sounds of treason

They want rule by the U.N…these are very evil men
Their socialism is ideal…that’s the way these lefties feel

There’s a lesson, that we can no longer be trusting the damn Democrats…these sewer rats
We hear the sounds of treason

A "BLOWOUT" that would solidify my thinking that this nation is NOT as liberal as the media/press seem to indicate, is my fervent prayer.

However, a close election even with a narrow victory for our President would mean something that I am reluctant to admit. We are very close to a SOCIALIST STATE here in America, liberalism has permeated most of the EAST and WEST coasts and is making significan in roads to middle America, save the SOUTH.

That being said. I do believe this election is going to be a decisive turning point in our history.

The leftists hate the military just slightly less than they hate GW Bush.

But the real key is that hate both Bush and the military far, far (yeah and another far) more than they hate the Islamic Jihadists. They are true allies of the Jihad because they want the same end result.

This nation is now hopelessly divided -- the only time we can be divided is immediately after a 9/11, when we are the helpless, dying victim. But we cannot be ever again be united in an active, aggressive defense of ourselves.

We have no point of political or moral reference between the two Americas -- we might as well be from different planets. There is not one America any longer.

And even more frightening: Like all large nations if you mix into this complete and unbridgable division a terrible defeat war, such as the Democrats are seeking actively, you often end up in civil war.

Yesterday, a local DJ in West Texas admitted to me off the air that he opposed Bush's policies solely because Bush "doesn't know how to talk; he's an idiot."

We are really at war with the dominant media culture and its satanic value system of emotionalism, celebrity cult elitism, infantilism, sensualism, shallowness, and ruthless competition.

See Thomas Franks' The Conquest of Cool. This is the most important book of the last 10 years.

(Note tagline. I mean it.)

"Where is Fort Sumter going to be this time?

Depends on who shoots first. If it's "them," my guess is Vandenberg AFB, or the Bremerton SSBN base. Lefty blackshirts on the West coast have spoken openly of direct attacks on these facilities. In terms of the overall conflict, these people are the elite strike force of the dominant media culture.

Two things:
1) How did we get to this point? I know when, between Kennedy and Vietnam (Dan Rather?), a slow fade. But when did the left completely stop caring about our country?
2) They were the same with the Nazi's, Communists and others I could list - but since they seem to be of the belief that "the enemies of my enemies are my friends" no wonder they supported Saddam. Just as he supported UBL so do they. DKK

Here's some more from Toby Harnden's original article from The Spectator (free registration req'd for full access):
...

But what do the abominations perpetrated at Abu Ghraib really tell us about Iraq and the faltering American-led project to plant the seeds of democracy here? And why are so many people who were against the war, or are incapable of viewing any American action as anything other than evil or stupid, greeting each fresh revelation with an almost indecent glee?

The other day, while taking a break by the Al-Hamra Hotel pool, fringed with the usual cast of tattooed defence contractors, I was accosted by an American magazine journalist of serious accomplishment and impeccable liberal credentials.

She had been disturbed by my argument that Iraqis were better off than they had been under Saddam and I was now — there was no choice about this — going to have to justify my bizarre and dangerous views. I’ll spare you most of the details because you know the script — no WMD, no ‘imminent threat’ (though the point was to deal with Saddam before such a threat could emerge), a diversion from the hunt for bin Laden, enraging the Arab world. Etcetera.

But then she came to the point. Not only had she ‘known’ the Iraq war would fail but she considered it essential that it did so because this would ensure that the ‘evil’ George W. Bush would no longer be running her country. Her editors back on the East Coast were giggling, she said, over what a disaster Iraq had turned out to be. ‘Lots of us talk about how awful it would be if this worked out.’ Startled by her candour, I asked whether thousands more dead Iraqis would be a good thing.

She nodded and mumbled something about Bush needing to go. By this logic, I ventured, another September 11 on, say, September 11 would be perfect for pushing up John Kerry’s poll numbers. ‘Well, that’s different — that would be Americans,’ she said, haltingly. ‘I guess I’m a bit of an isolationist.’ That’s one way of putting it.

...

Iraq is so dangerous now that hardly any television journalists venture out of the Al-Hamra or the Palestine Hotel, where lager and post-barbecue spliffs help relieve the tension of being in a war zone. There are insurance problems and the brooding, ex-SAS bodyguards forbid any excursions. The dirty little secret is that the endless ‘stand-ups’ you see on your screens are based on no reporting at all. Those of us who work for newspapers grow our Shia beards or, in the case of the women and the occasional John Simpson wannabe, wear hijabs and trust in fate, our relative anonymity and the skill and bravery of Abu Salah and his kind to get us to Najaf and Fallujah without being summarily executed. But what we can accomplish is limited.

Into this journalistic vacuum it is all too easy for the prejudices of the press corps — tourists looking through telescopes — to flow more freely than ever and the resulting reports to be distorted and incomplete. After the horrifying videotape slaughter of Nick Berg, there will be even greater reluctance among Westerners to leave their fortified hotels and compounds.

Whatever we thought about the war before it was launched, it is imperative that the forces of Arab nationalism and Islamism that now threaten to destroy Iraq are defeated. If America fails in Iraq it will be all of us in the West, not just Bush, who will suffer. But those who would be most in peril, of course, would be the Iraqis, who deserve better than to have their country treated as an electoral playground by the American Left or Right. To wish otherwise is as sick as the grins on the faces of the Abu Ghraib torturers.

This is abuse of their power and I am very sick of it!

Falling ratings on CNN and drop in profits isn't stopping them.

I know the constitution and I don't believe for a minute the Founding Fathers ever considered this type of widespread treasonous abuse of their rights. I do however think they had enough foresight to know that Americans as a whole wouldn't put up with it. Which makes me hopeful about the upcoming election.

However I am very concerned - this is a HUGE hurdle to overcome - this constant hammering.

"What are you, I, and the rest of America going to do about it? I agree with you, but what to do?"

"Just what we're doing."
"1. Excercise your 2nd amendment rights. The more legitimate firearms
expertise and ownership there is out there, the resistant the whole bill of
rights is to tampering. It's that simple: what's protected protects itself and
others much better.
2. Keep participating here on FR.
3. Vote your conscience in November."

I'd add number 4. Tell anyone that will listen to read FreeRepublic.

Everyone that asks me what I think about (insert latest lame stream press story here), I tell them I think they should read FR! This response works pretty good for me and gets a lot of concerned people in touch with the truth.

What about eco-terrorism? I live in Seattle and we saw just how violent these wack-pukes can be during the WTO riots.
