Archaeologists discover alma mater of Archimedes
By Thomas Maugh II
Los Angeles Times
A Polish-Egyptian team has unearthed the site of the fabled University of Alexandria, home of Archimedes, Euclid and a host of other scholars from the era when Alexandria dominated the Mediterranean.
The team has found 13 lecture halls, or auditoriums, that could have accommodated as many as 5,000 students, according to archeologist Zahi Hawass, President of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities.

The fates of the library and university are largely unknown. Parts of both might have been destroyed in Julius Caesar's war against Pompey. They might even have been leveled when the Arabs took over the city in 641, their locations lost to posterity. I always thought the Library was burned down, destroyed by a roman soldier..
Here, the article says it's fate is "unknown"..
Is the destruction of the Library just legend?

It would be great if they could find a hidden wing of the library - with books intact.

A Polish-Egyptian team has unearthed the site of the fabled University of Alexandria, home of Archimedes, Euclid and a host of other scholars from the era when Alexandria dominated the Mediterranean. OK, that's half the battle. Now if we can just bury some of our modern universities for a couple thousand years...

Not an oxymoron.

But why does it say "LATIMES" when in fact it is linked to the Salt Lake City Tribune???

But why does it say "LATIMES" when in fact it is linked to the Salt Lake City Tribune??? In the post article form, it is "the name of the source." I took that to mean the original source (where it was first published). The Salt Lake City Tribune apparently reprinted the article from the Los Angeles Times. But if one provides a link to the LAT site version of the article, one gets a subscription password challenge, so I thought it best to provide a pointer to the Salt Lake City Tribune site version of the article instead. That also has a side effect (so I understand) of decreasing revenue to the Los Angeles Times, which apparently gets advertising money based on the number of hits to its website.

But then, who would want to dig them up?
