Terror won't sway U.S. voters
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | 22 March 2004 | Robert Novak

Posted on 03/22/2004 1:09:04 PM PST by MegaSilver

George Friedman, who runs the Stratfor private intelligence service, spotted a change in al-Qaida's outlook over the last year. The Islamist terrorist organization, which previously treated George W. Bush as largely irrelevant to its global designs, now has zeroed in on the president. Combining that change with the terrorist triumph in Spain points to an ominous trend in the war on terrorism -- and in the U.S. presidential election.

Failure of the Arab ''street'' to rise in response to the U.S. military intervention in Afghanistan and Iraq has led to questions in the Arab world about al-Qaida's relevance. The coordinated attack on Madrid commuter trains showed al-Qaida still can create havoc. However, the global significance is the electoral defeat of Spain's conservative party. Headed for victory against the weak socialist opposition, the popular regime was voted out after the terrorist attack because it sent troops to Iraq.

Al-Qaida's regeneration points to the risk of suffering Spain's fate for any government joining forces with President Bush. But Friedman believes the ultimate target is Bush himself, predicting an attempted use of terror to defeat him in November. And that intent puts Sen. John Kerry in an uncomfortable posture.

Kerry's claim that unnamed foreign leaders told him they hoped for Bush's defeat is regarded in Democratic circles as the senator's first major blunder as prospective nominee. He cannot say who these leaders are, but the Bush-Cheney campaign has pointed to two overseas Kerry boosters that the senator did not have in mind: Kim Jong Il, North Korea's communist dictator, and Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, Spain's prime minister-elect.

Kim's propaganda machine lately has taken to playing the American's speeches on state radio. Zapatero stunned Spanish Foreign Ministry professionals Wednesday by noting with approval that ''the Americans will do it [change governments as Spain did] if things continue as they are in Kerry's favor.'' The foreigner whose approbation Kerry surely disdains is Osama bin Laden, but counterterrorism experts say the U.S. election has become an al-Qaida priority.

After last week's stunning Spanish election, a Stratfor report said, ''given the use of planted explosives in Madrid rather than suicide bombers, al-Qaida is likely planning to carry on with this tactic, particularly given the tremendous success of the operation in Spain.'' Britain, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands, Poland, Hungary and Australia were listed as U.S.-aligned nations risking the Spanish punishment. Stratfor added: ''A wave of attacks in those countries against soft targets . . . could shift the global balance.''

A new al-Qaida strategy twist was hinted last Thursday when the group that claimed responsibility for the Madrid bombings offered a cease-fire if Spanish troops actually leave Iraq as promised by Zapatero. That first known possible al-Qaida offer to negotiate with the West pressures weak European governments who might prefer appeasement to the fate of Spain.

However, in Friedman's opinion, al-Qaida's big target will be the United States. He sees an attack earlier (in the summer) rather than later (in the autumn), when it might boost Bush's re-election chances. ''The grand prize,'' said a Stratfor report, ''would be triggering an election defeat for Bush.''

The reaction from the left wing of the Democratic Party was sounded by Howard Dean, clinging to his national platform weeks after his presidential campaign collapsed. Dean said Bush ''was the one who dragged our troops to Iraq, which apparently has been a factor in the death of 200 Spaniards over the weekend.'' Kerry, clearly appalled, was succinct in his reaction to Dean: ''It's not our position.''

Kerry is an experienced politician who has been uncharacteristically reckless in the euphoria of his party victory. He is sailing dangerous waters, supported by rogue dictators and leftist opportunists around the world and risking rejection at home. Climaxing more than three centuries of defeat and decline on the world stage, Spaniards bowed to terrorism when they voted. Americans are considerably less likely to make that choice.

In a way, I wish the Islamofascists would manage to pull off a second 9/11.

If they do, everybody and his brother in America will be ready to wipe them off the face of the earth, and won't want to stop until we have.

Finally, something from Novak that is (somewhat) positive. Must have pained him to write this.

{Kerry] is sailing dangerous waters, supported by rogue dictators and leftist opportunists around the world and risking rejection at home.

I proposed the "Who would Osama vote for?" to a hardcore leftist Kerry KoolAid drinker and he as able to twist and contort in his mind until he convinced himself that Osama would vote for Bush because Osama was afraid of Kerry because Kerry represented an unknown.

Osama. (blink)

Afraid of Kerry. (blink, blink)

BWAHAHAHAHA!

History tells us that in WWII, another fearsome enemy used suicide bombers against America.

We didn't hunt the dreaded kamikazes house to house. We didn't even look for 'soldiers in uniform'.

We fire-bombed and nuked the Japanese downtown.

And that stopped them - dead. Nearly 60 years later the Japanese have no military ambitions.

The Islamoterrorists need a cultural exorcism to stop this.

It doesn't end otherwise.

Kerry is steering a very dangerous course: with the adulation of a left-of-center minority in the Democratic and Republican parties.

(In that respect,we are not that different from Spain-where a minority party can seize a large measure of power by aligning itself with one of the majority winners.)

Even as you read this - and I apologize to those of you who have read my words before - the Islamic madmen in Iraq, are doing their level best to pile up body bags: civilian and military,in the hope of creating so much repugnance for Operation Iraqi Freedom, the voters here will sweep President Bush (and as many other Republicans as they can manage) out of office.

They don't like Kerry - Hell, they can barely tolerate one another - but they think an ultra-liberal President will be a lot easier to shove aside.

I'm sure they reason-should Kerry win-he will keep one of his campaign promises above all : the prompt removal of US troops from Iraq, Afghanistan,Africa, and any other place the terrorists are being held in check.

Once that happens,we can look forward to some "fun" events:

1. Iranian troops crossing the border "to answer the pleas for help " from the Shi'ite majority in Iraq.(Hey,it worked for Hitler in Austria and Poland !)

2. The coming together of Islamic "super-states"-aligned on the basis of religious inclination ( Sunni or Shi'ite ).

3. The expedited development and distribution of nuclear weapons, missiles, etc. among the two rival groups.

I'll leave the rest up to your imaginations !

Unfortunately, the American people CAN be worn down.

General Giap and John Kerry knew it.

Now, Osama bin Laden and John Kerry think it'll work again.

While everyone has their attention focused on terrorism and theorize how it may affect elections, there is another issue that will affect our upcoming elections for president and Congress.

Our nation is a consumer nation. Ahead of principals and social issues, most of the electorate will vote on personal economic issues.

Why is no one talking about the reduction in oil production by OPEC nations and how this may affect the outcome of our elections? It is only a matter of time until the double digit increases in fuel prices this year will be passed onto consumers. When this occurs, economic hell follows.

Admittedly, it is not physically threatening like acts of terrorism. Still, it does represent how foreign interests will try to sway the perceptions of the electorate.

Well said.

A recent example is the Clinton impeachment. The reason Clinton survived was because peoples 401s were soaring, and the public didn't want To take a chance on throwing him out because that might cause the market to nosedive.

Had we been in a deep recession Clinton would have gotten the boot. - Tom

The liberals are our destruction. They foster terrorism and direct it. They want to destroy the American government and our people. This plan must be blocked.

The liberals are to blame for each American soldier who falls in this war. They have them on their conscience, and must also pay for it.

That seems a bit strong.

Many are weenies, who would surely take just a little appeasement to keep themselves safe - for now.

I will not tar 48-50% of the American population so blithely. I'm sure there are those in the higher echelons of party, government, or business, who want power - at whatever cost - and damn the consequenses. There is a special corner of hell reserved for them, that would sell out their country to the highest bidder.

People often say that the President is the image of the American people. That is true in a way deeper than we often think. If one could watch the face of our nation change during this war on terror, we would see the same transformation that we see with serious pride in the face of the President. The lines, the hardness, the decisiveness, but also the deep passion for the people and, in a broader sense for a humanity forced into so much bitter difficulty against his will and plans, are unmistakable.

How cynical in contrast are the stupid and frivolous grins of the Democratic candidate during his public appearances. One hardly has to ask which of these parties two enjoys war, and who therefore wanted and provoked it. The face of the guilty ones betray them.

Despite all their shouting, the liberals have not been able to weaken the magic force of the President's personality. It grows in power every day. In a time like ours, so short of great men, the presence of such a man on our side amazes even our enemies.

That's a terrible thing to thnk. Really. This country will not react to terrorism in the same way the people in Europe do. We are an evolved species on this side of the Atlantic. There is a great Condi Rice quote. I have it on the wall in my office. I'm not at work today, so I'll have to try to find and post it.

Ahh, here it is. It's a keeper.

"Power matters. But there can be no absence of moral content in American foreign policy, and, furthermore, the American people wouldn't accept such an absence. Europeans giggle at this and say we're naive and so on, but we're not Europeans, we're Americans -- and we have different principles."

My biggest concern is for President Bush's safety. I hope and pray the Secret Service is alert and vigilant.

Thanks for finding credence in my reply to the initial post.  Know what's encouraging? Someone in the press is reading posts to this site. I give coincidence little credit that the article "Gas Prices Taking Priority in Campaign" by CALVIN WOODWARD, Associated Press Writer, was just released in the last hour.

Free Republic is more than a site where people of like beliefs can share their thoughts with one another.  It is a place to raise concerns, and ultimately, make the general population aware of those concerns.
