Cain raising name recognition as conservative candidate
Marietta Daily Journal By: Dan McKee
February 6, 2004
Herman Cain has to be the most unusual candidate running for high public office in Georgia - and probably the entire nation.
Here is a graying, African-American, Republican businessman talking conservative politics with a capital "C." He's running for the U.S. Senate to succeed retiring Sen. Zell Miller, the Democratic maverick with virtually identical views.
Cain in his TV commercials now airing in this market comes out four-square and unequivocally for President Bush and the war in Iraq.
He fires away at liberal judges who would delete "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance. If they succeed, he says, "We should put them back. I believe that we need a constitutional amendment to guarantee we remain 'one nation under God.'"
He even calls for Congress to start cutting its pay until the budget is balanced.
It's all so unexpected, such a marked contrast to the liberal views of black Democrats usually seen on television.
Cain, 58, is the former CEO of Godfather's Pizza, and describes himself as "a conservative Republican from McDonough, Ga." He has written three books, has a wife of 35 years, two children and one grandchild. Though retired from his business, he is an associate minister at Antioch Baptist Church North in Atlanta.
His hard-right position pits him squarely against U.S. Rep. Mac Collins of Jackson in courting the Republican constituency represented by the Christian Coalition, while U.S. Rep. Johnny Isakson (R-east Cobb) occupies the center in the primary battle.
Cain's strong words in his TV commercials paled in contrast to the barrage he let loose Thursday after the Massachusetts Supreme Court decreed full marriage rights for homosexuals.
"The courts have failed the American people," the candidate declared in a news release.
"Congress needs to enact a constitutional amendment to protect the sacred institution of marriage. Liberal-minded judges have opened a floodgate of judicial tyranny that will chip away at the core values of this country until nothing sacred is left!
"It started with not allowing prayer in the schools, not being able to display the Ten Commandments, attempting to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance and now making same-sex marriages legal."
Cain said a constitutional amendment is needed "to protect the definition of marriage as the legal union of one man and one woman." He added that "these judges are overreaching their constitutional authority by rewriting legislation from the bench."
Finally, he declared, "We cannot allow this to happen. The long-term effects will further destroy the moral fabric of our society."
The candidate is reported to have a cool $1 million for more television and radio ads to build name recognition, having raised $1.5 million so far.
His message undoubtedly resonates and it will be quite interesting to see if he makes significant headway with Republican voters in the three-way race.
For now, there's no doubt that Cain is raising his name recognition.

Cain continues to speak to the hearts of Georgia voters. He has come from a distant 3rd place to seriously challange Collins for the priviledge of facing Isakson in a run-off. In the run-off either Cain or Collins will most likely win over the RINO Isakson. If Cain's momentum continues at the present pace it is entirely possible that Isakson will be lucky if he is close enough in second place to force a run-off with Cain.

Herman's been running several common sense political ads - Backing Bush in the WOT, scrap tax code & IRS, he talks the talk and from what I know of Cain, he walks the walk.
He's probably got my vote in the primary, he seems to be gaining the Big Mo.

You're fortunate to have him.

I've heard several of his radio spots on Boortz' show this week. Sounds good - he is starting to build his name recognition.

Hermain Cain is the real deal. Freepers who can should send him a buck or two to fend off the "moderates." If anyone has poll numbers for the GOP primary I'd be interested to see how he is doing. Outside of GA he is the only candidate who get national attention but it's going to be the loyal primary voters in GA who get to make the call.

Freepers who can should send him a buck or two to fend off the "moderates." Agreed. Freepers are quite fond of whining over RINO's, and for good reason. Here's a good opportunity to do something about it.

Being in Atlanta, I have heard many of his commercials and have been quite impressed with him! The lst time I heard him, I was not paying attention and thought it was an ad for an H&R Block kind of co. LOL!!
He impresses me and I just might vote for him. He says the things we want to hear from our congressmen...BUT ONCE THEY GET ELECTED, THEY BECOME WUSSIES!!

Georgia is very fortunate to have a conservative candidate willing to fix the Constitution.

I've also seen a few articles about him in the AJC. He certainly seems like a good guy.

Well Mr Chairman, you tell Herman that he has a supporter in Ct who has donated to his campaign and that supporter has a daughter and son in law in Georgia who believe in all the same things that Herman does.
