SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A purported statement by al-Qaida in Yemen warned Saturday of a "major strike" soon in the United States.

The statement, distributed by the Yemeni Tagamoo Party for Reforms, said: "A major strike, a big event will take place in America soon," reminiscent of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Sure Cal.

Centcom has not provided any names lately though. I think there is another section of the DOD or Centcom that releases the names but I have not found it yet.

Are you talking about replying to:

On News/Activism 02/05/2004 2:48:57 PM PST #6,684 of 6,847. (Thread 2)

You did take the time to write a lengthy retort, filled mostly with rhetorical questions, I thought. I also did not want to further antagonize you at that time. I feel my original post, the one that prompted your response, answered most of the questions you posited. More importantly, I posted a later post to "all", stating that I would lurk for the most part, and post only analysis. I subsequently posted an analysis of why the Russian thread seemed plainly a nonstarter.

My latest post was not really poking fun, but rather was meant to be humorous. In fact, many "regulars" saw it as just that. I am sorry if you did not. (And, just for the record, I do not think this whole thing is funny, as some have accused me.)

Sometimes, we learn from each other by posting things that are "outside the box." That's good. We can all also learn when others take a step back, and review the postings and missed analysis. That keeps us focused, in my view. It is the difference between uninformed rumor mongering, which I think we don't want to do, and honest attempts at analysis that tries to piece together raw data and anticipate a threat.

Some here, have an agenda. That's quite plain.

Your long post to me asked many questions, but in the end it seems to be asking me if I think Communism is a threat.

I do not. I do think that Countries who do not think like we do, and who have weapons pointed at us, bear close watching. But old-fashioned, totalitarian Communism, IMHO, is not a threat to take over the world.

The far bigger threat, IMHO, is soft communism. It is the creeping socialism we see adopted by left-wing interest groups, and indeed the Democratic party. Socialism, takes many forms, but in the end it is the redistribution of wealth. (It is different from using wealth for a collective good, e.g., building roads and highways, or contributing to a common defense.) Socialism sees itself in so many forms, from school funding, to federal mandates, to the "progressive" income tax, to attempts to legitimize gay marriage, etc.) The advocates of such policies are not "socialists" in their minds, but they have acquired the ideals of socialism, usually through misguided concepts of "fairness" or "equity."

That is the biggest threat, because it is a threat from within. It creeps into our culture and becomes the norm, without meaningful examination.

We have long since passed the threat of Military action by a Nation-state against us, for the purpose of conquering us. As I wrote repeatedly, here, the sub-national conflict we have now, being driven by radical Islam, is also a threat, but only because we are left confounded about how to use our might to retaliate against a foe who claims no national borders, and whose allies swear allegiance to us.

This thread, however, is about AQ activities and attempts to strike at our country. When we run afield of that, we lose our objectivity. I think it is perfectly legitimate for us to be concerned about old Communists selling resources and assets to AQ and other terrorists. Tracking that intelligence data is worthwhile, because it allows us to assess the threat.

Theorizing that this is all part of a master plan hatched decades ago by a defeated enemy, really does not help us assess the threat -- unless someone credibly believe AQ will strike us, hurt us, and permit the Russians to decapitate our government and pour soldiers across our borders to hold and conquer us. They cold not hold Afghanistan, which is stuck in the 13th Century. Imagine Russians trying to hold New York City.

The threat of socialism, is a creeping ideology. The threat, I thought we wanted to assess here, was about possible military/terrorist physical attacks on our people and country.

That's my focus.

The problem is the Quran and the Hadith are not terribly consistent about what is to be done with Jews and Christians. Followers of these two religions, along with a third religion that no one seems to be able to decide for certain what it is, are considered "Dar al Kitab", or People of the Book. That name comes from the fact that the Quran holds that these were religions which received a prophet of God, and a book of teachings from God, and as such are true religions. Although they are to be encouraged to be converted to Islam, they are not to be forced. Instead they can instead pay a special tax to the Islamic state for the freedom to practice their religion.

Remember that Muslims believe that the Prophet Mohamed is the "Seal of the Prophet" - that he is the final prophet, and brought the last word so to speak, the fully evolved form of the religion that they believe everyone is to practice.

The emnity between Arabs and Jews actually predates Islam. We can easily trace its sources back to the days of the Biblical Patriarch Abraham.

Readers of the Bible will be familiar with the story of how Abraham's wife Sarah was infertile until she was quite elderly, and then in her old age had a son who we call in English and who is called Yitzak in Hebrew.

Earlier, Abraham also had a son by Sarah's Egyptian slave girl, Haggar, around the same time. This son is known as Ishmael in the Bible, and in the Quran is known as Ismail.

Jews believe that God sealed a covenant with Abraham on the day he told him that Sarah would bear him the child Isaac. At the same time, he instituted the practice of circumcision, which both Jews and Muslims follow until today.

According to the Bible, God also promised the following: "As for Ishmael, I have heard you; I will bless him and make him fruitful and exceedingly numerous; he shall be the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation."

After Isaac was born and then weaned, both Jewish and Islamic teachings say that Sarah became enraged with Haggar and had her thrown out of the household with her son.

Both the Bible and the Quran agree that Haggar and Ishael wandered in the desert until the water and food was all gone, and then Haggar sat down to wait for her son to die. In both accounts a spring erupted from the ground, and provided water for the child. The Bible locates the spring in the Beersheba area; the Quran calls this spring the "Waters of Zamzam", which they believe still flows today in the city of Mecca.

So upon reading the historical perspective you've got a sibling rivalry of immense proportions - one gone very wrong. Muslims believe is was the child Ismail who was spared the sacrifice by God; Jews and Christians believe it was the child Isaac.

Muslims, Jews, and Christians claim Abraham as the earliest patriarch of their religion. Muslims call this God Allah, which they will explain to you is the Arabic word for The (impying uniqueness and oneness) God.

But still, the emnity between these two groups had obviously become an insurmountable obstacle by the time the Quran was written or revealed. (Muslims believe it wasn't written but was revealed by God.) So it is likely that the hadith are prejudiced to a degree by the cultural conditioning of 2000 years of hatred and resentment.

It is unquestionable tht there is Quranic justification for amicability and peaceful coexistance between Muslims, Jews, and Christians.

The following verses from the Quran illustrate this:

You will find the people most affectionate to those who believe are those who say, 'We are Christians.' (Surat al-Ma'ida, 82).

Today all good things have been made lawful for you. And the food of those given the Book is also lawful for you and your food is lawful for them. So are chaste women from among the believers and chaste women of those given the Book before you, once you have given them their dowries in marriage, not in fornication or taking them as lovers. But as for anyone who disbelieve, his actions will come to nothing and in the hereafter he will be among the losers. (Surat al-Mai'da: 5)

In fact, synagogues and churches are even to be protected: "if God had not driven some people back by means of others, monasteries, churches, synagogues and mosques, where God's name is mentioned much, would have been pulled down and destroyed. God will certainly help those who help Him - God is All-Strong, Almighty." (Surat al-Hajj: 40 )

So where is the problem? Many Islamic clerics point to what they describe as the corruption of Christianity. (I haven't really seen any justification in the Quran for the emnity with the Jews.) They cite this verse: "O People of the Book! Let us rally to a common formula to be binding on both us and you: That we worship none but God; that we associate no partners with Him; that we erect not, from among ourselves, Lords and patrons other than God." (Surat Al 'Imran, 64)

They feel that belief in Jesus Christ basically associates a partner, a co-diety with God, and this is the sole point that they justify their religous jihad upon.

There are cultural reasons for the emnity with Christians as well, going back to the Dark Ages and the Middle Ages, and the various Crusades, which they believe were attempting to stamp out Islam.

This posting is getting too long - I'll continue writing if anyone wants me to explore this further. And no I didn't answer the question so I will answer than in a few minutes :) Was just gving a historical perspective.

If the terrorist don't get cha I guess the dengue will.

Dengue hits Indonesia

Agence France-Presse

175 die from mosquito-borne virus

JAKARTA An outbreak of dengue fever has killed at least 175 people as of Thursday, and a health official warned that floods beginning to inundate Jakarta and other cities would worsen the situation.

The mosquito-borne outbreak has spread to four more provinces and infected 8,735 people in a total of 12 provinces since Jan. 1, said Dr. Mariani Reksoprojo of the Health Ministry, who called the outbreak "extraordinary."

Most of the cases are on Java, where more than half of Indonesia's 212 million people live. The number of infections is more than double those in the same period last year.

Reksoprojo said the death toll had risen to 175 on Thursday morning. Several days of rain that has caused flooding in the capital and other cities will swell the number of dengue cases, she said, adding, "It's clear it will worsen the situation." Local newspaper reports on Thursday said 1,800 people were forced to flee flooded homes in one Jakarta neighborhood while more than 1,000 homes on the city's outskirts were submerged.

Television pictures showed waist-high water in one West Jakarta neighborhood, and knee-high floodwater had washed across parts of roads and entered buildings in the east of the capital.

Reksoprojo said the impact from flooding would be indirect because the female aedes mosquitoes, which transmit dengue viruses, do not breed in muddy flood waters.

They prefer clean water from containers like earthenware jars, cisterns, discarded plastic food containers or used automobile tires, and other items that collect rainwater or drops that fall from an air conditioner. But because of the flooding will cause disruption, people will not be able to devote enough attention to keeping their environment clean, which is the key to avoiding dengue, Reksoprojo said. There is no vaccine or cure for dengue hemorrhagic fever.

Indonesian health officials suspect a new virus strain could be responsible for the outbreak.

But Dr. Georg Petersen, the head of the World Health Organization in Indonesia, said it was hard to say whether a new strain was involved in the outbreak, which was not totally unexpected. "Every year there has been a steady increase in dengue cases all over Southeast Asia," he said.

Dengue also peaks in cycles of about five years, and the current infections come at the peak of that cycle, he said.

Yes. Theya re trying to claim that Christians of today are not following the religion of Christianity as handed down by God, since Christians believe that Jesus is the son of God. They believe this is blasphemy - that Jesus is just a prophet - and that worshiping him is akin to idol worship and other pagan religions. They believe that Catholics, with saints, and statues, and relics are very serious offenders of this.

So yes, that is how they are interpeting it now.

My brother called and told me that his stepson Chad was killed recently.

Sorry to hear the news. We were walking on eggshells while my son was in Kuwait. The modified anti-ship missile that was directed at our troops dropped very close to his camp.

YES, I've noticed that. Was watching a movie, 'Under the Tuscan Sun,' and the star was verbally attacked by some French sounding woman, who went off on Americans. The 'cough' Star, replied with, 'well, some of us are sorry for that.' I wanted, with all of my heart, to SLAP the SNOT out of her. Good grief. I do believe MOST of Hollyweird are Communist, or worse.

Turned me off on that entire movie. I never recovered. Thank GOD, I hadn't bought the vile thing, a friend has loaned it to me, with the stipulation she didn't think I'd enjoy it, but would enjoy the scenery.
