SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A purported statement by al-Qaida in Yemen warned Saturday of a "major strike" soon in the United States.

The statement, distributed by the Yemeni Tagamoo Party for Reforms, said: "A major strike, a big event will take place in America soon," reminiscent of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Putin aide: Russia losing war on terror

WASHINGTON, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Russia is losing its war against economic crime and terrorism, a top aide to President Vladimir Putin has said.

"Peace is not yet with us. Terrorist activity is taking on the character of open defiance of the state and society," Viktor Ivanov, deputy chief of Putin's presidential staff in the Kremlin, told a conference at the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Moscow last Thursday, according to a report in the Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper monitored by the BBC.

I was having a bad day, and I guess I just got pushed over the edge the last time I checked in. At the time, my attitude was "I've got enough BS in my life to waste more time getting it online." I have thought about it some more, and I overreacted. Sorry for pouting, I've been online for a long time and I don't usually let the flames get to me. I think what got to me was the feeling that some people see us as the goofy, tin-foil hat wearing comedy relief at FR. It also bugged me that I took the time to write a detailed message addressing the criticisms of one of the biggest detractors, Iron Eagle, and he didn't have the courtesy to acknowledge anything I said.

I just needed a break. For the regulars here, thanks for your kind and supporting words.

>>>After more than 120 students checked into the Health Center and St. Mary's hospital during the first week of the outbreak, another 24 students reported symptoms Monday and 21 did the same on Tuesday.

--24 "reported symptoms" Monday, 21 on Tuesday

>>>Officials at St. Mary's Hospital said no students checked in there Tuesday, claiming they had the virus, but two did Monday. Athens Regional Medical Center officials were unavailable for comment.

--No students "checked in" Tuesday, two did Monday

Maybe a bit misleading, but not really a contradiction.

My brother called and told me that his stepson Chad was killed recently. The war hits close to home.

Thanks

Russia Tests Missile-Defense Proof Weapons

By VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV, Associated Press Writer

MOSCOW - Russia has successfully tested a hypersonic anti-Star Wars weapon capable of penetrating any prospective missile shield, a senior general said Thursday.

The prototype weapon proved it could maneuver so quickly as to make "any missile defense useless," Col.-Gen. Yuri Baluyevsky, the first deputy chief of the General Staff of the Russian armed forces, told a news conference.

He said that the prototype of a new hypersonic vehicle had proved its ability to maneuver while in orbit, thereby making it able to to dodge an enemy's missile shield.

"The flying vehicle changed both the altitude and direction of its flight," Baluyevsky said. "During the experiment conducted yesterday, we proved that it's possible to develop weapons that would make any missile defense useless."

Baluyevsky's comment followed a statement by President Vladimir Putin, who said Wednesday after attending rocket launches from the Plesetsk launch pad in northern Russia that experiments conducted during the military maneuvers had proven that Russia could build new strategic weapons that would be unrivaled in the world.

Putin said that the development of new weapons was not directed against the United States, and Baluyevsky reaffirmed the statement, saying that the experiment shouldn't be seen as Russia's response to U.S. missile defense plans.

"The experiment conducted by us must not be interpreted as a warning to the Americans not to build their missile defense because we designed this thing," Baluyevsky told The Associated Press.

He said that Russia has no intention of immediately deploying new weapons based on the experimental vehicle. "We have demonstrated our capability, but we have no intention of building this craft tomorrow," he said.

Baluyevsky said that Russia had informed the United States about its intention to conduct the experiment and added that U.S. officials issued not objections.

He said that the new vehicle had "ceased to exist" after the experiment — presumably burning up in the atmosphere.

Baluyevsky refused to comment on what kind of engine the vehicle had, how long its flight lasted and how exactly it maneuvered. He said that it had been designed by several Russian companies, but refused to name them.

As part of the massive military maneuvers described as the largest in more than two decades, the military launched a Molniya-M booster rocket with a Kosmos military satellite from the northern Plesetsk launch pad and two ballistic missiles — a Topol from Plesetsk and an RS-18 from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Baluyevsky refused to say which of the rockets had carried the vehicle into the orbit.

>>>>They have NO business trying to convert Muslims to pagan Christianity.

Now that is interesting. I don't recall noticing Christians being referred to as Pagans before.

Now the Quran refers to Christians and Jews as 'people of the book'. According to several translations, 'people of the book' are to be converted.

NOW, according to the same translations I've read, Hindus are referred to at the level of pagans and are just to be put to death. They are idol worshippers.

Now I'm not lending logic to any of the translations; but what I'm seeing here is a newer interpretation from the Quran.

Yes, there were Fatwas issued; but that is different than retranslating the Quran.

What do you think StillProud?

Alleged Malaysian Nuclear Dealer Missing

By PATRICK McDOWELL, Associated Press Writer

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - The middleman in an alleged deal to supply Libya with nuclear components has disappeared from his Kuala Lumpur residence, and U.S. officials Thursday said Washington wants Malaysia to stiffen export controls to prevent such proliferation.

Malaysia summoned the top U.S. diplomat to protest what the government views as unfair attention on it as President Bush calls for a global crackdown on the international nuclear black market.

The allegations that a Malaysian company produced centrifuge components for Libya's nuclear weapons program has produced the first bump in U.S.-Malaysian relations since Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmamd Badawi took office nearly four months ago.

Malaysia's protest declared the country supports nuclear non-proliferation and was "offended" that Bush unfairly named the nation as a source of parts to Libya's program without specifying other nations, the New Straits Times newspaper reported.

Malaysia thoroughly investigated the origin of the parts and determined that the company involved — which is majority-controlled by the prime minister's son — did not know they were for nuclear use or would end up in Libya, the newspaper reported.

Meanwhile, the former company executive who brokered the Libya deal — Sri Lankan Buhary Syed Abu Tahir — has left his Kuala Lumpur apartment with his family, guards at the building said.

Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak said Thursday he did not know the specifics of the diplomatic protest, but "probably it is to express our concern that Malaysia is singled out unfairly and we have been totally vindicated by the facts."

U.S. officials indicated Thursday that the key challenge in Malaysia and other countries was to put export controls in place to keep unwitting companies from being used.

"In keeping with its commitment to non-proliferation, we are encouraging Malaysia to take the steps necessary to bring its export control system in line with international standards, in hopes of preventing future proliferation activities," Embassy spokesman Frank Whitaker said.

The parts, seized en route to Libya last October, were produced by Scomi Precision Engineering, a subsidiary of the oil-and-gas company Scomi Group that is majority-controlled by the prime minister's son, Kamaluddin Abdullah.

The deal to make the parts for a Dubai-based company, Gulf Technical Industries, was brokered by Tahir, whom Bush labeled the "chief financial officer and money launderer" of the network led by Abdul Qadeer Khan, father of Pakistan's nuclear bomb.

The Tahir family left their luxury apartment in an exclusive Kuala Lumpur neighborhood on Wednesday, security guards at the complex said, a day after The Associated Press tracked them down and tried to seek comment. Their current whereabouts are unclear, though they are believed to be under close surveillance by Malaysian authorities.

A senior police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AP on Thursday that as far as he knew, Tahir, who has Malaysian permanent residency, was still in the country.

Tahir's Malaysian wife, Nazimah Syed Majid, said Tuesday evening that her husband was "away." She did not say where.

But a building security guard told the AP that Tahir had come and gone several times from the building Tuesday. The couple left Wednesday morning with their two young children, sending a driver back later to pay outstanding bills.

The telephone was not answered at the apartment Thursday.

Malaysian officials have said Tahir was cooperating with a police investigation into the Khan network, but have given no details. He is free and Najib has said he would remain so unless police determine that he committed a crime.
