SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A purported statement by al-Qaida in Yemen warned Saturday of a "major strike" soon in the United States.

The statement, distributed by the Yemeni Tagamoo Party for Reforms, said: "A major strike, a big event will take place in America soon," reminiscent of the Sept. 11 attacks.

U.S. intelligence: Disinformation caused London flights scare


U.S. intelligence officials say disinformation was behind recent warnings that Al Qaida was planning to hijack airliners from London to the United States.
British Airways, Continental and Air France canceled several flights from Britain, France and Scotland to the United States last weekend due to security worries.

Intelligence reports indicated that Al Qaida terrorists were planning to set off chemical, biological or radiological weapons during the flights.

However, intelligence officials now have concluded that Heathrow airport was the origin was disinformation. "Heathrow is one of the most secure airports in the world," one official said. "Al Qaida would not be able [to target] a flight originating there, except under the most difficult security conditions."

Pilot of Ukrainian cargo plane dies mysteriously

A foreign pilot died at Sadar Hospital here yesterday in mysterious circumstances.

Cuznetov Aleg, 40, pilot of a Ukrainian cargo plane and a national of Moldavia, fell sick at around 3:00pm in his hotel suite.

Hotel authorities rushed him to the hospital where he died shortly after admission, hospital sources said.

"Aleg was suffering from respiratory problems when he was brought in and died after some time," said on-duty doctor Shafiqul Islam.

Police sent the body to the hospital morgue for autopsy to ascertain the cause of death.

Aleg was among the 20 Russian-origin pilots of six ATL cargo planes now engaged in transportation of shrimp fry from the Cox's Bazar coast to Jessore. He lived in Hotel International Plaza near the seashore.

A unnatural death case was filed with police.

February 10, 2004 -- Saudi authorities have arrested a fighter pilot under suspicion of planning to crash a jet in Israel in a Sept. 11-style terror attack, it was reported yesterday.

The pilot had allegedly been recruited by al Qaeda to carry out the homicide mission against an undisclosed target, Israeli TV reported. Saudi investigators are rounding up other people who may have been involved in the plot, and the investigation is continuing, the report said.

The pilot, who was not named, was arrested over the weekend. It was not immediately clear how close he was to carrying out the terror plan.

But Israel has increased its air security, including upgrading its ground-to-air missiles to shoot down planes, because of the possibility of such an attack from Saudi Arabia, possibly over Jordanian air space.

The potential Saudi threat is taken seriously because 15 of the 19 hijackers on 9/11 were Saudis, and al Qaeda mastermind Osama bin Laden is Saudi-born.

Meanwhile, the Israeli supreme court heard petitions yesterday from two human-rights groups opposed to construction of the West Bank security fence. A government attorney, Michael Blass, confirmed during the two-hour session that the fence route would likely be altered "to ease as much as possible the lives of the Palestinians living [along] it."

The International Court of Justice, based in The Hague, Netherlands, is to open its own hearings on the controversial fence in two weeks, but its verdict is nonbinding.

More than 1,000 Jordanians took part in a protest march in Amman yesterday to denounce the construction of the fence. The fence is part of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's plan to "disengage" Israelis from Palestinians if no progress is made toward a formal peace agreement.

Sharon also is considering removing all settlers from the Gaza Strip as part of his plan.

Yes. I think that is why they have gradually been reducing tidbits in the press and on the TV-putting information in phone books and the like. And why they must be making arrangements to be in strategic bunkers...or perhaps some have just stayed on there since the continuity of government "exercise" when we went to orange.

Another thought- it won't take long for this news to spread.If you have a safe place to go, this would be the time to do it. (I get to choose between 3 East Coast cities- and a rural area near Camp David.)
