SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A purported statement by al-Qaida in Yemen warned Saturday of a "major strike" soon in the United States.

The statement, distributed by the Yemeni Tagamoo Party for Reforms, said: "A major strike, a big event will take place in America soon," reminiscent of the Sept. 11 attacks.

I believe you are absolutely correct. I also think that the East Coast City referred to is DC.

French Lawmakers Ban Headscarves In State Schools

February 10, 2004

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MND Newswire

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The French National Assembly has overwhelmingly voted a ban on "visible" religious adornments in public schools.

French lawmakers on the left and right of the political spectrum joined forces in the lower house of the French parliament to pass the bill 494 to 36. The measure will now move to the upper house where the Senate is expected to approve it.

While the ban is nominally aimed at all symbols of religious affilation—including Jewish skullcaps and large Christian crosses—its central target is the Muslim headscarf.

France has been grappling with a growing culture clash between its cherished secular identity and the opposing sensibilities of its 5 million Muslim residents—the largest Muslim population in Western Europe.

Some 70% of the French electorate is in favor of the ban.

Meanwhile, in Malaysia, around 30 members of the opposition Islamic Party (PAS) protested at the French Embassy to condemn the French decision.

"We are particularly concerned that this legislation appears to represent a backlash against one French minority—Muslims," wrote a PAS representative in their memorandum to the French government.

In Washington on Monday, over 45 members of the United States Congress sent their own memorandum to the French government to express their concern that the ban would force French children to choose between their faith and their schooling.

The Pope has also criticized the decision to ban religious accoutrements.

Did it include the weapons grade materials needed to replenish the aged isotopes as well? That seems to be the significant factor.

jerseygirl, i might have answered my own question. Was looking for something else and stumbled onto this:

"Sources who spoke to DEBKA-Net-Weekly on condition of anonymity report that for a princely sum estimated at US$40 - 75 million, Bin Laden bought between 12 and 15 kilos of uranium-235, all of which came from Russia or some Central Asian Muslim republic."
<br< I guess there is reason to be optimistic as Debka gets about as much wrong as they do right.

Russia Must be Ready for Fighting on its Territory
02/09/2004 11:44
This is continuous fighting against the international terrorism, against the American military machine that may break out before 2015 and fighting against China's armed forces that may start in 2030
The modern permanent world war is remarkable for its aggressive, merciless, global, systematic and network nature. The war is being waged according to various unprincipled methods; and it will be further waged with application of all possible resources including weapons of mass destruction even though there are no formal reasons, causes and legal grounds for this aggression.

The war is being waged only depending upon US's decisions and its readiness for the war. What is more, we already observe results of the continuous strategic transfer of America's military power into its political and economic effectiveness.

Russia's national elites, mass media, institutions of the government and civil society are the basic weapon of war against Russia. National historical values of Russia, the values of collective existence, have transformed, the values of individual survival determine their anti-national activity.

Only Russia's adequate military power and activity of the nation aimed to preserve its own culture and state system may prevent this progress of events. From a strategic point of view this means that Russia must be ready for straight armed fighting on the national territory. This is continuous fighting against the international (Islamic) terrorism, against the American military machine that may break out before 2015 and fighting against China's armed forces that may start in 2030.

This is strategic timing meant for all activities of the governmental army reforming and other national projects. The conclusion gives a list of types and the scale of wars for participation in which Russia and the Russian armed force must be ready. The war against international terrorism will continue as a rebellious war (of the Chechen and Palestine types); a war against the USA will be a struggle of high-tech military systems; a war against China will require big and modern land forces as this war will consist of defensive and offensive operations meant to protect Russia's territories along the eastern borders.

Readiness of the country and the nation for these wars is the maximal scope of problem that Russia and the Russian society must settle within adequate periods of time.

Vice-president of the Collegium,
Retired Major-General Alexander Vladimirov

Sean, my friend, don't take things so personally. I hope your sources are 100% correct and OBL is, in fact, in custody. Some rumors turn out to be true, like Monica's blue dress; and some rumors turn out to be false, like Willy Clinton's love child. My problem has nothing to do with the trading of rumors -- hell I love a good juicy rumor as well as the next person -- but rather, my problem has to do with the presentation of a rumor as an absolute fact. Until I see OBL in a perp walk or read or hear an offical announcement from the Feds, rumors of his capture are just that.

I agree. I think the threat is real and imminent.

I do hope we can stop it.
