SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A purported statement by al-Qaida in Yemen warned Saturday of a "major strike" soon in the United States.

The statement, distributed by the Yemeni Tagamoo Party for Reforms, said: "A major strike, a big event will take place in America soon," reminiscent of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Since you apparently joined FR fairly recently, I suggest you read the three threads, that will give you a better idea of the general situation.

Dozens Killed in Bombing South of Baghdad

By MARIAM FAM, Associated Press Writer

ISKANDARIYAH, Iraq - A suicide bomber blew up a truckload of explosives Tuesday outside a police station south of Baghdad, killing up to 53 people and wounding scores — including would-be Iraqi recruits lined up to apply for jobs.

The blast in this predominantly Shiite Muslim city followed the disclosure Monday of a letter from an anti-American operative to al-Qaida's leadership asking for help in launching attacks against the Shiites to undermine the U.S.-run coalition and the future Iraqi government.

Many angry townspeople blamed the Americans for the blast, and Iraqi police had to fire weapons in the air to disperse dozens of Iraqis who stormed the shattered remains of the station hours after the explosion.

"This missile was fired from a U.S. aircraft," said Hadi Mohy Ali, 60. "The Americans want to tear our unity apart."

No U.S. or other coalition forces were hurt, said Lt. Col. Dan Williams, a military spokesman in Baghdad.

It was at least the eighth vehicle bombing in Iraq (news - web sites) this year and followed warnings from occupation officials that insurgents would step up attacks against Iraqis who work with the U.S.-led coalition, especially ahead of the planned June 30 transfer of sovereignty to a provisional Iraqi government.

The Iraqi Interior Ministry and the local police chief said the bombing was carried out by a suicide driver who detonated a red pickup truck at razor wire and sandbagged security barricades in front of the station.

However, Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt said it was unclear whether the bombing here was the work of a suicide driver or whether the vehicle was parked and then detonated.

Casualty figures varied.

The U.S. military command reported 35 dead and 75 wounded but said those figures could be low since Iraqi authorities were handling the investigation. The Iraqi Interior Ministry said 40 to 50 people were killed and up to 100 wounded, including four policemen.

However, a local hospital director, Razaq Jabbar, put the number at 53 dead and 60 wounded — all believed to be Iraqis.

"This figure might increase," he said. "There were some body parts that haven't been identified yet. Some more bodies may be trapped under the rubble."

The explosion reduced parts of the station to rubble and damaged nearby buildings. The street in front of the station was littered with the wreckage of shattered vehicles as well as pieces of glass, bricks, mangled steel and pieces of clothing.

Policeman Wissam Abdul-Karim said he was standing in front of the nearby courthouse when "I heard a very strong explosion" and was thrown to the ground.

"It was the day for applying for new recruits," Abdul-Karim said. "There were tens of them waiting outside the police station."

Insurgents have mounted a string of car and suicide bombings in recent weeks. The deadliest so far has been in the northern city of Irbil on Feb. 1 when two suicide bombers blew themselves up at two Kurdish party offices celebrating a Muslim holiday, killing at least 109 people.

On Jan. 18, a suicide car bomb exploded near the main gate to the U.S.-led coalition's headquarters in Baghdad, killing at least 31 people.

No group claimed responsibility for Tuesday's bombing, but Kimmitt said the attack "does show many" of al-Qaida's "fingerprints," including the size of the bomb — which he estimated at 500 pounds — and the large number of civilian casualties.

In Baghdad, however, Iraqi police Lt. Gen. Ahmed Kadhum Ibrahim said the engine number of the pickup indicated it once belonged to an intelligence officer in Saddam Hussein's regime.

On Monday, U.S. officials said a letter seized last month from an al-Qaida courier asked the terrorist leadership to help foment civil war between Shiite and Sunni Muslims to undermine the coalition and the future Iraqi leadership.

The purported author of the letter was Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a Palestinian-Jordanian suspected of al-Qaida links and believed at large in Iraq. The author boasted of having organized 25 suicide attacks in this country.

U.S. administrator L. Paul Bremer released the al-Zarqawi letter to Iraq's Governing Council on Tuesday and said they planned to release it to the Iraqi public.

"It's to inform Iraqi leaders so they can help protect against the ethnic warfare that Zarqawi wants to provoke," said coalition spokesman Dan Senor, and "so ethnic leaders won't be provoked into reprisals."

However, many townspeople here blamed the Americans for the attack Tuesday. Various rumors spread that U.S. troops had fired a missile at the building or had stayed away from the police station because they knew an attack was planned.

Dozens of people stormed the wrecked police station late Tuesday but scattered when police fired in the air. They chanted: "No, no to America! The police are traitors; not Sunnis, not Shiites! This crime was by the Americans!"

The rumors, which local Iraqi officials dismissed out of hand, underscore the deep distrust between many Iraqis and the American occupation force nearly a year after the collapse of Saddam's regime.

Abbas Hassan, 31, said the Americans hand out applications for the police force every day but "today, they didn't. It was all arranged by the Americans."

Saleh, the police commander, said the rumors about the Americans were "an excuse" to draw attention away from "the real terrorists."

"This is terrorism that targeted the people and the police," he said.

Makes me wonder about the increased copter traffic around this area (Logan, NShore) recently. Even at night.

Over a month ago there was an accidental fire at the Sandwich power plant that cut off electricity for a short time. My cousin, who lived there, called and said that there was "A Lot" of air traffic in the area and wondered what the F was going on.

Many thanks for that link. I thought things were interesting one year ago. The plot just keeps getting thicker.

I saw Benazir Bhutto (your post 1614?) last night as well. She certainly is not a Musharraf fan. Her ideas seemed to have more merit than Musharraf's (more security, cracking down on the terrorists, etc.). Musharraf, IMO seems to "soft". Of course, he is trying to avoid all too frequent assassination attempts. And I'm sure we (the common folk) will never hear the whole story on this sordid nuclear technology selling affair. I'm afraid it runs far and deep and I wouldn't be surprised if someone has their hands in Musharraf's pockets and he in theirs.

I don't know how they run their elections in Pakistan. Do you know, did Benazir Bhutto choose not to run for office again, or did she run and she lost the election?

I wasn't expecting a name of source. All I meant was from what agency and if there is multiple sources and how reliable Sean thinks the source is.

"If nukes are shielded in lead, you can't pick up the radiation, that's the whole idea of lead shielding. "

I wonder if they are picking up all the smoke detectors and radon in the basements as well.

Sean, I once again hope you are wrong.

Illness sickens guests at Philly hotel that hosted GOP gathering

By DAVID B. CARUSO
The Associated Press
2/10/2004, 4:21 p.m. ET

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Health officials are investigating an outbreak of illnesses at a Philadelphia hotel that recently played host to some of the nation's most powerful Republicans.

At least 69 guests at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel were hospitalized last week when they were sickened by a mystery bug that caused dizziness and vomiting. More fell ill, but did not seek medical attention.

Philadelphia Health Department spokesman Jeff Moran said investigators are looking at several possible causes for the outbreak, including food contamination and the Norwalk virus, an illness that has been known to afflict travelers on cruise ships.

The sick included a member of House Speaker Dennis Hastert's staff and a second staff member's spouse, a Hastert aide said Tuesday. The two fell ill on Feb. 1, a day after checking out of the hotel.

The Illinois Republican and about 200 other GOP leaders, including President Bush, stayed or dined at the Loews between Jan. 29 and Jan. 31 as part of an annual retreat to discuss party policy.

Most of the sicknesses did not occur until several days after the Republicans had departed.

Hardest hit were employees of Cendant Mortgage, who had gathered for the Mount Laurel, N.J.-based company's annual sales conference on Feb. 2.

Cendant Mortgage spokeswoman Jeannine Dooley said 69 company employees became ill enough to seek treatment in hospital emergency rooms. About 500 Cendant employees attended the conference, which ran from Feb. 3 to Feb. 8. Many of the ill had dined at the hotel during their stay, she said.

"Everyone is fine now," she said.

Sickness also befell about 13 employees of Cytogen Corp., an oncology pharmaceutical group based in Princeton, N.J. None were so ill that they needed medical attention, said Cytogen's senior sales director, Corey Jacklin.

"It was like a stomach virus, like a 24-hour bug," Jacklin said. "Maybe half our group were dizzy and achy and had to lie down. The other six or seven were pretty violently ill with stomach symptoms."

Jacklin said employees recovered fairly quickly and stayed on until the end of the gathering, which began on Feb. 2 and ended Feb. 8.

A Loews spokesman did not immediately return phone messages Tuesday.

City health officials were contacting guests at the hotel and asking them what they ate, Moran said. Some of the people who became sick have also undergone tests that might be able to identify the illness. Moran said there have been no new cases of the illnesses in several days.

The investigation is expected to last several weeks.

" All I meant was from what agency "

==

You've got to be kidding!

Sean already said, he was getting the info from some sources he considers very reliable. But as with any intel type info, the only time it's confirmed publicly, if we fail, i.e. nukes go off. As Condi Rice said, we don't want to wait until a mushroom cloud rises above our cities.

With the terror threat, you rather chase a thousand false alarms, than allow one real threat to be ignored.

Just look at what's in the open literature, just from that and common sense one can deduce that the terrorists are highly likely to have nukes, and they are certainly willing to use them.

Well, well, well. I had a chance to read that article. So now the Irish terrorists are in lockstep with the middle eastern terrorists and are also working with the S.A. (FARC) terrorists. Isn't this just plum cozy. I wonder when Bubba is going to be making a trip to FARC territory.
