SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A purported statement by al-Qaida in Yemen warned Saturday of a "major strike" soon in the United States.

The statement, distributed by the Yemeni Tagamoo Party for Reforms, said: "A major strike, a big event will take place in America soon," reminiscent of the Sept. 11 attacks.

I can believe it. I think that Kaddaffi actually provided us with enough info so we could foil the recently planned attacks, but he doesn't know all the details either.

But I agree, he doesn't want to be on the list of countries who will see serious retaliation, if AQ detonates one or more nukes in the US.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Islamic radicals are being trained at terrorist camps in Pakistan and Kashmir as part of a conspiracy to send hundreds of operatives to "sleeper cells" in the United States, according to U.S. and foreign officials.
The intelligence and law-enforcement officials say dozens of Islamic extremists have already been routed through Europe to Muslim communities in the United States, based on secret intelligence data and information from terrorists and others detained by U.S. authorities."

"The Muslim Student Association: Coming In Peace?"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "February 6, 2004 - If you have seen signs for the Muslim Student Association on college campuses and wondered who they are, where they came from and whether they exist on student fees alone, you are not alone. Federal investigators are curious too.

The Senate Finance Committee is investigating non-profit groups to determine whether those organizations might be a source of funding for terrorist activities. Among the groups that the Committee wants Internal Revenue Service records on: the Muslim Student Association (MSA), active on campuses throughout the United States."

Iranian airliner crashes in UAE
At least 35 killed; a few survivors reported
The Associated Press
Updated: 5:30 a.m. ET Feb. 10, 2004SHARJAH, United Arab Emirates -

An Iranian airliner carrying passengers crashed Tuesday on arriving at Sharjah airport in the United Arab Emirates, killing at least 35 people according to a Civil Aviation official. There were believed to be at least a few survivors.

Local television reports showed flaming, smoking wreckage and rescue helicopters landing near the scene. A row of bodies covered in red blankets was visible in the footage, and frantic-looking rescue workers in white robes were seen pushing at the plane's debris, searching for survivors.

The number of people aboard wasn't clear, with mixed reports from officials and local television of 50 or 40 people, including one child. A Civil Aviation official, who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity, said 35 people were confirmed dead. Sharjah television said there was initial word of survivors.

Civil aviation and television backed off initial reports the plane crashed on takeoff and said it was returning to Sharjah for the Iranian island of Kish in the Gulf when it went down.

The civil aviation official said the plane crashed near a populated area in the emirate; Sharjah television reported that the plane had crashed in an uninhabited area.

Mehdi Mehranpour, deputy managing director of Iran's national carrier, Iran Air, confirmed that the plane belonged to Kish Air, a separate Iranian company. Kish Air officials could not immediately be reached.

Speaking to The Associated Press in the Iranian capital of Tehran, Mehranpour said the airliner was a Fokker 50, which can carry about 60 people, and that it had crashed in a populated area near Sharjah airport. In the television footage, flames were visible from the front of the plane, which appeared not to be intact. The plane's tail section could be seen and no fire were seen in that area on the television footage. Other indiscernible debris could be seen smoking on the ground.

Kish Airline has a fleet of four medium range TU-154M jets, a Russian aircraft, on domestic and international flights and four short-range Fokker-50s, German turboprops, according to the company's Web site.

History of air accidents
Iran has a history of air accidents, often blamed on badly maintained planes. In June, an Iranian military C-130 transport plane crashed outside Tehran, killing all seven people on board. In February, a Russian-made Ilyushin-76 crashed in southeastern Iran, killing all 275 aboard.

In Belarus in September, a Tupolev-154 belonging to Kish Air on a Tehran-Minsk-Copenhagen went off course while making its landing approach at the Minsk-2 airport, striking trees which caused serious damage to the plane's wings. None of the 40 people aboard were hurt.

In 1995, an Iranian flight attendant hijacked a Kish Air Boeing 707 to Israel during a flight from Tehran. The plane was returned to Tehran with 174 passengers and crew.

Last month, a top Iranian aviation official asked the United States to lift sanctions on its airline industry as a humanitarian gesture so the country can buy spare parts for its airplanes.

Tehran has blamed many of its air crashes on U.S. sanctions, saying they have prevented the country from repairing and replacing an aging fleet that includes many Russian-made Tupolov planes. Iran has complained of trouble buying European-made planes as well because some Airbus parts are American-made.

"TERROR SUSPECT: Al-Qaida suspect taught English, fought for Taliban"
Union Leader ^ | 2/10/04 | CHRIS WILLIAMS , AP

Posted on 02/10/2004 2:40:17 AM PST by kattracks

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "MINNEAPOLIS — A man accused of providing support to al-Qaida trained in martial arts and with weapons, taught English to al-Qaida members and joined the Taliban front lines, according to an FBI affidavit.

Terror suspect Mohammed Warsame, 30, twice saw combat with front line units of the Taliban while in Afghanistan and once sat next to Osama bin Laden at a meal, said the affidavit, which investigators said was based on interviews with Warsame.

“The defendant stated that bin Laden was very inspirational,” according to the affidavit.

Prosecutors argued Monday that Warsame, a Somali with Canadian citizenship, is a flight risk and should remain in jail while his court case proceeds. U.S. Magistrate Judge Franklin Noel ordered him without bail pending trial."

Detachment of Russian warships arrives in Inchon

On Tuesday a detachment of Russian Pacific Fleet (TOF) warships from Vladivostok (the Far East) arrived in the South Korean port of Inchon on an official friendly visit.

The TOF press center reported on Tuesday that the detachment includes the Varyag Guards missile cruiser, the Admiral Tributs large antisubmarine ship (a missile frigate according to NATO classification), and the Koreyets small antisubmarine ship.

The official friendly visit under the flag of Admiral Viktor Fedorov, the commander of the Pacific Fleet, will last from February 10 to February 14. It is devoted to the 100th anniversary of the heroic loss of the Varyag cruiser and the Koreyets gunboat in an unequal naval action during the Russian-Japanese war of 1904-1905.

When the detachment arrived in the South Korean port of Inchon, a wreath was sunk where the two Russian warships fought an entire Japanese squadron 100 years ago, and a memorial for the dead heroes was held.

In the naval encounter not far from the Korean port of Chemulpo (now Inchon) the two Russian ships fought a Japanese heavy cruiser, five light cruisers and eight destroyers. The Varyag cruiser, which was badly damaged and lost 122 sailors, and the Koreyets gunboat returned to Chemulpo port and were sunk. The Russian sailors who survived the battle returned to Russia through neutral ports.

A joint Russian-South Korean naval exercise in communication, maneuvering and assisting ships in distress will be held after the end of the visit of the TOF detachment of warships to Inchon.

Putin's 'Creeping Coup'
By WILLIAM SAFIRE

At the 40th Wehrkunde Conference in Munich, Ivanov unloaded on the West. The pressure point he chose was the Conventional Forces in Europe (C.F.E.) treaty, negotiated a decade ago, initialed but never signed. In 1996, as NATO prepared to admit Eastern Europe, it set up a formal relationship with Russia, assuring it that no nukes and no "substantial combat forces" would be placed close to its border. Three years later, Russia made the "Istanbul commitments" to pull its troops out of Georgia and Moldova, which it still has not done.

"We assumed those commitments in a definite military and political environment," Ivanov warned, "with the admission of the invitees to NATO, this environment will drastically change." Of the C.F.E. treaty, he asked: "Might it be another `relic of the cold war,' as the ABM treaty has been labeled some time ago" before it was "shelved to the dustbin"? He made Putin's threat plainer: "The adapted C.F.E. treaty may well end up as the ABM treaty was fated to."

Looking hard at McCain, Ivanov said, "One of the major priorities of the Russian foreign policy is our relationship with our closest neighbors . . . relations with the Commonwealth of Independent States are in no way a hallmark of Russian-brand `neo-imperialism,' as some try to depict it, but an imperative for security. . . ."

McCain is no Neville Chamberlain. "Under President Putin," he responded, "Russia has refused to comply with the terms of the Treaty on Conventional Forces in Europe. Russian troops occupy parts of Georgia and Moldova . . . Russian agents are working to bring Ukraine further into Moscow's orbit. Russian support sustains Europe's last dictatorship in Belarus. And Moscow has . . . enforced its stranglehold on energy supplies into Latvia in order to squeeze the democratic government in Riga."

Speaking with the freedom of a senator, McCain said "undemocratic behavior and threats to the sovereignty and liberty of her neighbors will not profit Russia . . . but will exclude her from the company of Western democracies."

Anybody see Benazir Bhutto, former Prime Minister of Pakistan on Greta last night?
She made the statement that OBL is Mushariff's insurance, implying that without the threat of OBL and AQ Mushariff would lose one of his major justifications for military control of the government. The other, more sinister implication is that perhaps Mushariff is protecting OBL. She said that currently in Pakistan the popular response to the question "Where is OBL hiding? is "Look in Mushariff's home" or something to that effect.

Saudi Arabia Defends Yemen Border 'Screen' Plans

Monday, February 09, 2004 5:04 a.m. ET

RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia said on Monday it was building a security "screen" on its southern border with Yemen aimed at curbing the flow of militants and weapons, but rejected any comparison with Israel's West Bank barrier.

Talal Anqawi, head of Saudi Arabia's border guard, told the pan-Arab newspaper Asharq al-Awsat that workers were laying a pipeline to prevent vehicles crossing the porous frontier, which cuts through mountainous tribal territory.

Saudi Arabia is battling a wave of violence, blamed on militants linked to Saudi-born Osama bin Laden. Tons of weapons, ammunition and explosives have been seized, many of which are believed to have been slipped across the border from Yemen.

The two countries, who only recently ended a long-running border dispute, have stepped up security cooperation since suicide bombings in Riyadh killed more than 50 people last year.

But Yemeni newspapers have reported that the Yemeni government has complained about the route of the barrier, saying it was being built in a 20-km (13 mile) zone designated as an open area under a 2000 border agreement.

Anqawi said the barrier was being built on Saudi soil.

"What is being constructed inside our borders with Yemen is a sort of screen...which aims to prevent infiltration and smuggling," he told Asharq al-Awsat. "It does not resemble a wall in any way."

Saudi Arabia has condemned Israel's construction of a barrier, part fence and part wall, inside the West Bank. Israel says it is a security barrier to keep out Palestinian suicide bombers. Palestinians say it is a pre-emptive landgrab.

The newspaper showed a picture of what it said would be a model for the Saudi-Yemeni barrier -- a section of raised, concrete-filled pipeline which it said had already been built on Saudi Arabia's northern border with Kuwait.

Diplomats say Saudi Arabia is urgently stepping up border controls after the surge of militancy last year, fueled by weapons smuggled across thousands of kilometers (miles) of desert of mountain borders.

It is close to awarding a contract worth up to seven billion euros ($8.7 billion) to French defense electronics company Thales to supply a border surveillance system, sources in Paris said last month.

Here is just one of many sources. Speculation as to who the papers may implicate varies.

(Snip) It's worth noting that Khan's sole admission of guilt is thought by many to have been staged to deflect criticism of Musharraf and other senior military figures who may have endorsed, known of, or suspected this black-market trade of nuclear secrets. (Khan's daughter, for one, is believed to have gone abroad with documentation that could implicate the military.)
