BIRCH RUN, MI — The Michigan Democratic Party is organizing a protest outside the Saginaw County venue where GOP presidential hopeful Donald Trump will speak on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
The Facebook page for the protest, "Rally Against Donald Trump," was created on July 30 by the Michigan Democratic Party.
"We cannot let Trump's anti-immigrant, anti-veteran beliefs be welcome anywhere in our state," the event page states.
A poster for the protest references the current GOP frontrunner's "anti-immigrant, anti-veteran statements."
Trump will be the keynote speaker at a Lincoln Day event, a fundraiser for the Republican Party in Saginaw and Genesee counties, at the Birch Run Expo Center on Aug. 11.
Protesters plan to meet at 3 p.m. Aug. 11 in the parking lot of Big Boy, 8645 Main in Birch Run. The group, which is encouraging participants to bring homemade protest signs, will travel to the entrance to the Birch Run Expo Center, 11600 N. Beyer in Birch Run.
The choice to invite Trump to the area has garnered criticism from both within and outside the Republican Party.
Saginaw County Commissioner Cheryl Hadsall, a Democrat and Birch Run resident, said she is thrilled about the economic benefit and raised profile for the village that she anticipates with Trump's visit. At the same time, Hadsall said she will not attend because she takes issue with policies Trump promotes and some of the recent comments he has made.
The owner and operator of a Saginaw Township hair salon, the county commissioner said she would be happy to fit Trump in for a haircut during his visit.
Democratic Party Chairman Brandon Dillon has called on state Republicans to rescind the invitation altogether.
Trump has come under fire, in particular, for recent comments made about Mexican-American immigrants and veterans, including statements that becoming a prisoner of war and being held for years in North Vietnam do not make U.S. Sen. John McCain a war hero.
At the same time, there are others who say area residents should have the opportunity to hear what the candidate has to say.
Genesee County Republican Party Chairman Michael Moon said the groups organizing the event will not cancel the Trump appearance.
"We can't silent others' opinions and shut them down because we don't agree with them," Moon said.
The Michigan Democratic Party is not the only group organizing a protest to Trump's first appearance in the state.
Two Flint residents helped organize the "Mexican-American Rally Against Donald Trump." That group will meet at Fiesta Charra Restaurant, 9143 Birch Run Road, at 3 p.m. before moving to the entrance to the Birch Run Expo Center at 4 p.m.

If Trump is really a democrat, as some have opined here, especially Walker Worshipers, why are democrats fighting Trump? If he is really one of them democrats would be celebrating. Some people will post any subterfuge about other candidates, without a hint of shame.
I hope thousands of Trump supporters show up and stomp all over the astroturfers.
It will likely be hundreds of Trump supporters to 1 protestor. This could be fun to watch. Conservatives are so much better behaved than liberals, that I do not think we have to worry about any stomping.

Personally I think it’s time for some stomping... and not apologize afterwards, instead blame the other side for starting it. Always seems to work for the left.

Trump drives them crazy, because once the unwashed low info voters start listening, next summer, the anti-personae negatives go away, and Hil-Ree gets thwacked.

Trump ought to hold a rally in Detroit. And behind the stage, two blown up pictures - before and after - of the place he’s speaking in. He can point to them and say: this is what happens when you let democrats run the show.
They are realizing that Trump might end up winning the whole enchilada and the DemocRATS are shared scitless.
