[history]
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Public health interests prevailed over warnings that personal freedoms are being eroded as the Maine House gave its final approval to a bill to ban smoking in bars and taverns.
Representatives' 95-47 enactment vote sent the measure to the Senate and put Maine a step closer to joining California and Delaware in imposing statewide bans on smoking in bars. New York's ban starts in July, and Connecticut's newly enacted ban on smoking in bars takes effect next April.

''We're tired of working in an environment that is not safe or healthy,'' said Rep. Leila PercyWait - is Leila implying that bars are safe and healthy environments without the smoke?
Bwahahahahahahaha!
No wonder Maine has become so third world with brain trusters like this calling the shots.

Thanks for putting up your home page. Now I know that you are here with an agenda. Sweetlips, I've had my page put up in Free Republic for two years now. And if fighting for the rights of business owners and the American people, then you bet I have an agenda.
I am from the old school where people lived and let live. Now all of a sudden, all of your weak putz's were born, and want to have things YOUR way. To HELL with everyone else! It's YOUR way or NO way! You won't get to me, sweet lips. I been around a lot of people of your ilk, believe me.
And your agenda is: kill the Constitution, kill Free Speech, lock people up just because YOU don't like their legal lifestyles! Oh yes..........there are more like you popping up with each passing day...
Remember what I said about "the force that is working in the underbelly of American?" You sound like YOU just might have your own ROOM down there.
Too bad we all don't agree with your little minded beliefs. But it will take more then the likes of you to get the better of US. You can count on it.

I've been watching the trends in Pocatello. The large sit down restaurants are going smoke free. It has increased their patronage. The small bars and small restaurant/bar combinations are offering limited non-smoking sections. Denny's is the only sitdown restaurant in town that positively reeks of tobacco. It is also the only 24-hour sit down restaurant in a 40 mile radius. When the bars close at 2 AM, the seats in Denny's fill to the max with the smoking patrons from the bars. Jack-in-the-Box keeps a drive-through open 24 hours.

Let the whacko's in Maine hear from you and ask them why Americans should have to give up their freedom just because some ego-driven person in their ranks wants to be a bar-fly finger. I certainly agree with all you said, Frank! It's mind blowing how our rights are being chipped away a little at a time. And our lawmakers promise us ANYTHING to get our votes. Then, when they DO get into office, they sure stick it to us. I'm sick and tired of this whole process today.

You really think that twirps and birdbrains, physical cowards like you and the mushbrains down in Augusta or any other state capital have the right to engage in behavior modification? They habe the power to. I'm willing to bet that you and any two friends you'd care to pick couldn't modify my behavior. Better people than you, including the governments of three different states, have tried.
Like it or not, the government has already modified your smokign behavior and will continue to do so until you are free to smoke in your own home so long as you have no children.
The smokers arguments are failing big time. You folks need another point sheet to read off of. The one you got is broke.

First, just because there is majority in vote of something is hardly proof that it is moral or legal. Slavery comes to mind, electing Bill Clinton twice does too, but that was a pluralityits not proof its moral or right but it is legal for states to ban smoking in bars and restaurants.

But as long as a majority voted that way, it's just fine with you.Its not fine with me but inconsiderate smokers doesn't give anyone anything to work with here.

Sorry, I don't have time to read all of this but the first thought which comes to mind is the veterans who fought to secure the freedom NY enjoys are now being deprived.

Here in Bangor there just aren't that many choices if you're looking for a
good restaurant. We're talking an area where the folks think that Olive Garden is a real Italian joint, a proposition that anyone from NY, NJ, CT, RI or MA would get a chuckle out of.
One of the best and oldest, Pilot's Grill, just went belly up this past winter.
The Denny's here is on the highway, so all the state troopers are cooping in there late at night and the drinkers don't go near the place.
Bangor and Brewer are about evenly split between smoking and non-smoking establishments, so each crowd can pretty much avoid each other if they so desire, but the chances of getting anything but a pedestrian meal in either venue is nil.

It will be interesting to see what happens to those people in the coming conflict. The same majority that backs Bush's war on terrorist are the same majority that support gun rights and the same majority that are supporting these bans. Looks to me like the majorities in this country are pretty discriminating about whose rights get gorged and smokers don't look too good.

I don't actually have photoshop but someone with photoshop might be able to smooth the image a bit more :) I used gimp, which is good but it's not as good as photoshop.

How many time must you tell us you're gutless when it comes to personal property rights and tobacco smoke?

smokers don't look too good. You don't look too good. You would look worse if you had the balls to come into my place and tell me what to do.
You are a coward hiding behind government guns to get the power to violate rights.

"The same majority that backs Bush's war on terrorist are the same majority that support gun rights and the same majority that are supporting these bans."
I hope you aren't trying to suggest that the same people who were for the war are for the bans. Do you realize that one of the most wanted items by the troops in Iraq was cigarettes?
