Brooklyn Beep Marty Markowitz said he will probably hang a portrait of a black person or a woman in his office in place of the country's first president, while moving the Father of Our Country elsewhere in Borough Hall.

"I respect history . . . but there has to be a recognition that this is 2002," Markowitz said. "There's not one picture of a person of color, not one kid, not one Latin. Borough Hall should reflect the richness of our diversity."

Re #52

I have to say you are a close fit of New Yorker I ran into. People who want to hold a teach-in about NYC :). Many New Yorkers turns New York into a religious object, zealously worship and defend it. That is too much cultish for me. NYC may be a nice city or not. But if there are too many zealots inside, that fails my test :).

I will agree to disagree with you. Regional pride is something we need to revive in this country. With so many people living in McSuburban communities (Orange County, CA, Orlando, Florida are two examples I know well) without any sense of connectedness, I am pleased when I see, for example, Texans brag about their state. Remember, loyalty to one's locality used to come in third behind faith and family.

How about leaving GW's portrait where it is and hanging Markowitz elsewhere?

Sad, the Brooklyn Museum truly is a fine institution that has resorted to sensationalism and offensiveness in order to draw visitors. I have fond memories of going there with my favorite girlfriend followed by a walk in Prospect Park.

This is as much racist to me as a white as the N word is to blacks. This bird should have a permanent tatoo of the whole body and paint it pink or yellow.

Maybe he's right. It's time for some new history - the old history was making too many people successful and rich. With this here new history we can all fail miserably. We miserable folks just love company. /sarcasm

PC is destroying our country...
Worse, the "rank and file" folks just don't believe in it, just fanatics the damn liberal media, and most anyone in a coffee house.
We at work were discussing the hideous decision to "diversify" the NYFD flag raising statue.
Here is the make up of the room:
One Korean man
One white woman
Two white men, me and a registered liberal who holds a local office
One black female

With zero debate we concurred that changing the statue to show diversity is the stupidest thing ever thought of.
Political correctness is destroying our country.

I will tell you why Rah Rah macho talk is worth more than teets on a bull. It brings about a proper attitude. Did you ever notice before a football game, for instance, that the players will partake of some of that rah rah macho talk? No matter how slim their chances of victory?

I can see no practical purpose to saying "there is no logical reason I can win" before going into a fight. WHo cares.

Now that I have better explained my distain for defeatist attitudes, I will give you a logical reason why you should have hope.

In my opinion the fight we are engaged in has two fronts. There is a cultural front and a political front. The mistake of the conservative movement has been to fight almost exclusively on the political front, while the culture rots beneath us. The truth is that politics follow culture, not the other way around.

The reason why the culture is rotting beneath us is because the left has controlled for decades the institutions that shape our culture. Put simply, our current state of cultural decay has been engineered. If it can be engineered it can be re-engineered.

In preceding centuries cultures developed slowly through the accumulated knowledge of generation after generation. Modern technology has allowed information to pass so much faster and so much easier that the left's assault basically destroyed in one generation, what took centuries to cultivate.

So what gives me hope, is the idea that just as the cultural factories of media, education, and entertainment have been hijacked, they also can be rehijacked. How is the important question. And I think it is more important and productive than asking how we can possibly win.

Can you give me a logical reason why we can't do that?

"and why shouldn't we have hope, after all, we are Americans" -Ronald Reagan (paraphrased from memory but same idea)

You are, of course, correct sir.

But please also note (and I am always proud to relate this to my AA Republican friends) that 5,000 black patriots were under arms for us during the RevWar; this in the face of the Brits offering immediate freedom to American slaves who joined their side (and some certainly served with the Brits, but there were plenty of white loyalists also).

And finally, next time you see the famous painting of "Washington Crossing the Delaware" imagine some black faces on the rowers: approximately one-quarter of Colonel John Glover's Marbleheaders were black.

In sum, Mr. Markowitz, by all means pay homage to the black men and women who joined the patriot cause: just leave The General's portrait be.

Bottom line, no matter their reasons, their 'feelings'; if a decision is made based on the 'politically correct' view of the situation; it is wrong. . .(and that includes the PC casting of the firemen in bronze, as well. . .)

There is nothing good, right or 'correct' in political correctness. . .

I called Markowitz's office and said that they have just made a statement that Democrats no longer want whites to vote for them and I will never vote for a Democrat again in my life.

Good for you.

So what gives me hope, is the idea that just as the cultural factories of media, education, and entertainment have been hijacked, they also can be rehijacked. How is the important question****

I, too, am optimistic. Actually quite a bit more since 9/11. First, we have 24/7 news media which is injecting competition into the lockhold the "Big 3" had for years. Read the book "Stolen Valor" if you want some insight into what Cronkite et.al. did to shape the public's view of Vietnam - it will make you furious.

Second, there is the Internet, where loony liberal ideas (previously out of view for most people) can be discovered and instantly disseminated. I am convinced that the Internet (in particular FR) was instrumental in keeping ALGORE from stealing the election with the help of Clinton and his mob buddies.

Now, if you want to discuss the trend of Americans away from their traditional Judeo-Christian background in favor of loony New Age crap, I would argue that many people in my generation (born 1959) are rejecting the secular humanist views embraced by the '60s crowd and returning to traditional religion.

Getting ahold of the education establishment and Hollywierd will be difficult, but doable in time.
