WHO warns that the global health impact of alcohol now rivals that of smoking.
A report this month documents a marked increase in the incidence of alcohol-related diseases and deaths worldwide and suggests ways to curb the impact.
Alcohol's Role in the Global Burden of Disease states that drinking even small amounts of alcohol greatly increases the chance of fatal injury and boosts the chances of developing diseases such as cancer, neuropsychological disorders and liver cirrhosis.
Jurgen Rhem, a scientist at the University of Toronto's Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and one of the study's coauthors, says the ills of alcohol have gone largely unnoticed in light of high-profile anti-smoking campaigns.
"In terms of perception there is one disease that is clearly associated with tobacco, namely lung disease," he says. Alcohol use, on the other hand, "is related to 60 different diseases, but with most of those diseases alcohol is to blame for a smaller percentage, from 5%50%."
"I think that makes a difference in the public perception and that's why alcohol is much more difficult [to deal with]."
According to WHO data, alcohol consumption has increased in many of the former USSR republics as well as in developing countries, as is the case with Thailand (see Figure).
WHO's warning seems to contradict recent highly publicized research that highlighted the cardiovascular benefits of moderate wine drinking. Rhem says they factored this into the research, subtracting any health benefits from the results.
The WHO study makes several recommendations including advertising bans and increasing taxes. Recent research has shown the most effective tool in curbing alcohol consumption is a price increase.
Guess they want to extort money from alcohol next .... gotta keep the wage slaves healthy now.
This article would read better after a few drinks.
One way or the other......I'm gonna getchya, gonna getchya, gonna getchya getchya one way, or the other...
Flog 'em.
Yeah just toss it, Why let a little thing like Facts get in the way of your extortion scam.
Alcohol, tobacco, sugar and hormones; seems there ain't nothin' safe to ingest nowadays.
...and don't forget fats (i.e. nuts, butter, etc.) salt, caffeine, deep-fried anything, and carbs.
It figures they'd want to do that. Never mind that it would be a whole more effective to LOWER taxes by ending all government spending on medical treatment. If people had to pay their own medical bills -- or do without medical care -- after they mangle themselves in a car accident, or damage their livers, drinking would quickly become unfashionable.
So what?

Smoke and drink up my friends. Tomorrow you may well lose your mind...and eventually die.
Boy am I glad I'm old and was lucky enough to live most of my life when people were actually considered smart enough to make their own decisions, both about themselves and their children.
No one gets out alive, to my knowledge. I'll keep eating bacon and eggs, buttering my vegetables, drinking coffee, smoking Viceroys and drinking Jim Beam. Someone else can have my share of chocolate and cake.
Who wants those extra twenty years when you're 80?
Wait a little. Everyone knows that alcohol is beneficial for cardiovascular system (in moderation). Since according to them, alcohol and tobacco have similar impacts on health, it follows that tobacco use is clearly beneficial as well (also in moderation). Therefore, huge tobacco settlements and all tobacco education/awareness programs are being exposed as fraudulent.
I knew it from the day one.
How long as mankind, as a species been smoking or drinking alcohol? And we are still here.
Since we can no longer smoke in bars, I think perhaps that alcohol should not be served there either. There should be no negative impact on the affected businesses. <--- Liberal thought!
hehehe .....
here it comes... the UN mafia is claiming more turf
