When NBC sent Tony Dungy packing, they said it was a youthful revamp of Football Night In America. The former NFL head coach and analyst for over 17 years thinks something else had to do with it.
The two time Super Bowl winner (one as a coach, one as a player) was a staple of NBC’s Sunday Night Football across two decades. He brought expertise and experience to the network’s pregame, halftime and postgame shows… that is until NBC wanted to go a different way.
In an interview with Sage Steele, Dungy said that the writing was on the wall when he got fired by NBC a couple of months before the 2026-27 season was set to begin:
“I kind of knew that was going to be the case, but then they came to me and Rodney and said, you know, they wanted to get a little younger and change the voices and they appreciated what we had done. But they were moving on and reshaping the show. So it was tough, but that’s happened before in my football career, and it happened there.”
The changing of voices and the “getting younger” motivation was how NBC framed moving on from Dungy and Rodney Harris, but the former NFL head coach thinks his talk about religion and his opposition of abortion.
When Steele asked him if he thought his personal views and his faith had anything to do with him being fired by NBC, he didn’t tip toe around with his answer. He stated that NBC knew who he was as a person from the jump, and seemed to be okay with his opinions… until they weren’t:
“There are some things that in TV especially, they want you to be careful because they want to attract everybody. They want to have an audience of everyone. They don’t always appreciate you speaking about your faith.
But for me, I’m always going to do that, and I’m going to try to do it in a respectful way. But people are going to know that I’m a Christian. So that part is never going to leave. I am pro-life, and I’m not gonna be ashamed to say that.”
That being said, Dungy didn’t go as far to say that NBC fired him because of his outspokenness about his faith.
Steele inquired with the former analyst if he thinks that was the real reasoning behind NBC’s decision, and he denied answering that while also saying that the Lord must have something different for him at this stage in his career:
“I don’t know. I don’t know. And it really doesn’t matter. I look at it as I was there 17 years and had some great times and great relationships. The Lord has something different…
I was pretty sure it was, you know, that there were things that they didn’t want me to talk about, and we had a good understanding. They knew who I was when I got hired, and it is what it is.”

PING!................
He should sue for age discrimination!...............
If he was just outspoken about Allah he’d have probably been promoted and also given in depth interviews about his spirituality.
Those female sideline reporters. Every winning player should give their thanks to the one when being interviewed.
He was fire for outspokenness about his faith AND his age. Both of which are illegal.
Tony Dungy is the real deal. He walked the walk. He visited my niece’s father in law when he was dying from brain cancer. The FIL was a former firefighter then turned chief, and they believe that it was his line of work that caused the cancer. Tony Dungy met with him, and prayed with him several times in his last few weeks.
A younger person will not have the depth of experience he has...................
Wish that was true for CNN, Colbert and Kimmel.
CNN may be turning a new leaf soon..................
I have no doubt that was a big part of that. I also don’t think he bought into all the BLM BS either.
he should be one of the role models that them colored folks look up too.
then again, i was fooled by rapey cosby for the longest time.
Tony D is real, Cosby was fake
I was just wondering what happened to Coach Dungy the other day when watching one of these shows. What triggered my reflection was how bland and boring most of the new voices are.
Overall, I’ve lost interest in football, though. The extra-game stuff (ie, the ubiquity of sports betting invading every aspect of the program) has become really, really tedious.
Something I noticed when I compare older NFL broadcasters to today’s, is how much higher the voices of today’s announcers are.
I commend him for his faith... But I think they fired him simply because he’s boring and dull... The man had one of the best QB’s to come along in a generation and he only managed to win one Super Bowl. A bit better than Shula who had the best QB of the last century and won no Super Bowls... But the man is generally uninteresting. Slightly more interesting than paint drying, but not much more interesting.
