Two Syracuse University students have been charged with burglary as a hate crime after one of them was alleged to have thrown a bag of pork into a Jewish fraternity house as people gathered to observe Rosh Hashanah, police said Wednesday.
The two 18-year-olds were also charged with one count each of criminal nuisance in the incident at the Zeta Beta Tau house about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, police in Syracuse, New York, said.
Allen Groves, the university’s chief student experience officer, called it a “deeply troubling incident" in a message to the campus community Tuesday night.
“Tonight’s incident as reported to us is abhorrent, shocking to the conscience and violates our core value of being a place that is truly welcoming to all,” he said. “It will not be tolerated at Syracuse University.”
One of the accused students entered the frat house and threw the bag of pork inside while the second drove the vehicle that they then used to flee, Groves said. Police arrested both soon afterward, he said.
Police said the two students were detained and charged after consultation with the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office.
The bag of pork was thrown into the fraternity house as members were eating dinner on the first night of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, which is observed over two days. It is the beginning of the High Holidays.
The district attorney’s office did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment Wednesday night.
District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said that Zeta Beta Tau is a known Jewish fraternity and that the case is being treated seriously, NBC affiliate WSTM of Syracuse reported.
“This incident is not a foolish college prank and will not be treated as such. It will be treated for what it is, a crime directed against a group of Jewish students enjoying a celebratory dinner and seemingly secure in their residence,” Fitzpatrick said, according to the station.
Police and the university did not release a suspected motive in statements.
Why does history have to repeat itself?
This kind of behavior should have ended in the 1950s.
It’s stupid, and juvenile.
They should be expelled from all New York state universities and colleges permanently..................
I see the “Free Palestine” Neo Nazi crowd is up to their usual libtard tricks again.
I couldn’t agree more.
Tacky, rude, and childish.
Get kicked out of school for it? Fair.
Criminal? No.
Would you say the same thing if they had thrown a bunch of pork into a Moslem frat house during Ramadan?
If political, I would agree. Sounds more like drunk frat boys being dicks to me.
I wonder what would have happened if they had done it to Muslim students?
How funny that liberals express more outrage over a hot dog being thrown than they do over a political assassination.
Hateful Leftist FurriecRATS no doubt.
Of course.
These crimes against any ethnic group are wrong.
Thank you. Your consistency on the matter is highly commendable.
The two students are morons. ZBT became non-sectarian in 1954. Sure it has traditionally been considered primarily a Jewish fraternity, especially on the East Coast, but it isn’t officially Jewish. I’m a ZBT alum from a chapter that was mostly non-Jewish.
That said, I love how we here in North Idaho are all considered racists, but blue states consider themselves “progressive”. You wouldn’t see this kind of crap in North Idaho.
I bet their names end in -ah!
Burglary?? Now they are just making up false and goofy charges.
Juvenile and stupid, but their lives shouldn’t be ruined for it. A one year suspension with reparations for damage and a public apology should send the message that this is serious business, not just a prank.
It might be interesting to know how many fraternity members actually don’t mind eating bacon.
Throwing a bag of bacon into a mosque would provoke a much more serious reaction.
Used to have a Jewish friend. He ate bacon, no problem............
The student, identified as Samuel Patten, 18, of Brooklyn, then fled the home in a vehicle driven by another student, Kyle Anderson, 18, of Greenwich, Connecticut. They were later captured by police and charged with burglary as a hate crime and criminal nuisance.
