When I speak of Christians being illiterate, I have far more in mind than just the inability of some to properly read and write – in that they are simply the product of the modern Western education. But I am speaking here of a wider sort of illiteracy, one that is as regrettable as it is widespread.
I refer to historical illiteracy, theological illiteracy, biblical illiteracy, church history illiteracy, etc. Far too many Christians in the West today are woefully ignorant of that which they should not be ignorant. They know little about their own faith, their own Christian culture and history, their own doctrine, and their own Bible.
That is why the church keeps losing. A people divorced from their own heritage and their own belief system will not long stand. Indeed, they will be blown about by every wind of doctrine, by every cultural breeze, and by every latest trend, to paraphrase the Apostle Paul.
In 1939 C. S. Lewis said this:
"...A man who has lived in many places is not likely to be deceived by the local errors of his native village; the scholar has lived in many times and is therefore in some degree immune from the great cataract of nonsense that pours from the press and the microphone of his own age."
Or as Winston Churchill once said, “The greatest advances in human civilization have come when we recovered what we had lost: when we learned the lessons of History.” Yes, exactly right.
And of course if we wish to preserve our freedoms, we especially need to know our history, since all totalitarian regimes thrive on our historical amnesia...

Great article. It reminds me of that old question...
What’s the difference between ignorance and apathy?
Worth the read. Thank you. He forgot the Battle of Tours, but perhaps that was too much to cover.
“there’s only one real question to ask yourself...do you believe IN God or do You BELIEVE God”? Jesus stated that the devils believe IN God yet they have no Salvation and yet it is written that “Abraham BELIEVED God and it was accounted to him for Rightousness”. which are you? only YOU can answer honestly but don’t fool yourselves though. there are no excuses.
Yes that is exactly the case – a population with little sense of its own history. If you don’t believe me, I offer this challenge for you: go out and ask any dozen random people why today is so important historically speaking, and see what responses you get.
I suspect very few will know anything about the importance of October 31, be they Berliners, Melbournians, Londoners or New Yorkers. I speak this to their shame.
The reason people—both Christian and non-Christian—don’t know history is because their education has been distorted by the cabal.
But of all groups, the cabal takes the cake for ignorance.
That’s right, sadly.
Battle of Tours, Naval battle of Lepanto in 1571 was a major defeat of the Ottoman Fleet and then the Battle of Vienna in 1683 . The Ottomans attacked and Europe was about to be over ran. A coalition Force lead by King of Poland, John 111 Sobieski Broke the siege and stopped the Ottoman advance. The Winged Hussars had a great day.
Yes, unfortunately.
ignorance is ssitting inthe pew, and just listrening to the sermon, and going home.
apathy is showing up, so you are seen, wonderring about the ball game, going home, having done your christian duty in attending, maybe evem tithing.
And 1565 siege of Malta.
I dont know and I dont care!

That’s a profound and cautionary quote.
I don’t know but there’s not much you can say about apathy.
:-)
Christians believe in Colossians 3:1-4 that says, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”
and, 1 John 2:15 that says,
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”
However, the Bible calls for Christians to be active citizens. Christians are to stand up and speak out when man’s law conflicts with God’s law as Peter and the Apostles did in Acts 5:29. Also, God says to “select capable men from all the people — men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain — and appoint them as officials (Exodus 18:21,). In America, we have the privilege of voting our leaders into service.
God says Christians are the “salt of the earth” and we can help influence public for good when we vote for leaders who share our values (Matthew 5:13).
Silence in the face of evil is sin (Proverbs 24:11); but Christians in this country can speak out with their vote, as well as their voice. It is through knowing God’s will that Christians will have discernment in what they read and hear that gives the principles that is good for their fellow man.
Why do Christians Know So Little About Their Religion?
- Rabbi Tovia Singer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pYjFnnwSwo
That’s a good one.
Tom - Mr. Singer’s youtube video is a long monologue
Basically, in my interactions with people of various religious background, most people know little about their religion.
In your case, you quote Mr. Singer’s videos instead of answering yourself, so if I took you as an example of Rabbinical Judaic beliefs, I would say the same “know little about your religion”.
Most people are happy to just follow.
