In an interview with Ukrainian journalists broadcast on state television on Tuesday after a period of alleged war crimes carried out by the Russian army against his people, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed to rebuild after the conflict, turning his country into a “big Israel.”
“Ukraine will definitely not be what we wanted it to be from the beginning. It is impossible. Absolutely liberal, European – it will not be like that,” Zelensky said. “I think all our people will be our great army. We cannot talk about ‘Switzerland of the future’ — probably, our state will be able to be like this a long time after,” Zelensky said. “But we will definitely become a ‘big Israel’ with its own face.”
“Israelis have lived surrounded by enemies for all of their history, and Ukraine will be doing the same.”
Rabbi Lazar Brody, who advocates for a spiritually and physically healthy approach to life on his new website, felt that Zelensky comparing Ukraine to Israel was horribly misplaced.

Ukraine is not surrounded by enemies but they obviously have one large one, at least in its current incarnation. Since it’s not likely they will be joining NATO, and even if they did, they will have to place a high priority on an effective military.
By the time this is over, a high percentage of its people will be war veterans, and this will change the culture, and change the relationship between the citizens and their government. If Ukraine is independent, it won’t be because of government or because they inherited it, it will be because they themselves made it so. And because they themselves are prepared to keep it so.
In that way it will be like Israel. He did make another interesting remark. He said Ukraine will not be a liberal European state, it will have its own traditions. It sounds like he is saying they won’t simply submit to Brussels. Since EU membership had been their fondest dream, it sounds like the war may be changing the way they see the EU. Curious.

This guy just says what his puppet proxy masters have told him to say, tailored for whatever audience they have him address.
That was the plan, and in following that plan Ukraine was just following most of the rest of Europe. But now it's about national survival, and it wouldn't be surprising if both Zelensky and the EU have put that plan on the back burner for years to come.
