Ukraine is not surrounded by enemies but they obviously have one large one, at least in its current incarnation. Since it’s not likely they will be joining NATO, and even if they did, they will have to place a high priority on an effective military.
By the time this is over, a high percentage of its people will be war veterans, and this will change the culture, and change the relationship between the citizens and their government. If Ukraine is independent, it won’t be because of government or because they inherited it, it will be because they themselves made it so. And because they themselves are prepared to keep it so.

It sounds like he is saying they won’t simply submit to Brussels. Since EU membership had been their fondest dream, it sounds like the war may be changing the way they see the EU. Curious.
