PSALM 23
A psalm of David.
1 The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
forever.. .

NOTES ON MY SELECTION CRITERIA The Bible and its Author are my focus, not the art: this is The Bible in Paintings, not "Great Paintings" nor even "Good Paintings." So, works need not be masterpieces to qualify for inclusion here—they don't need to be housed at the Louvre nor auctioned by Sotheby's. They only need to illustrate successfully some aspect of the Biblical text or, frankly, just tickle my fancy, which I'm always asking the Holy Spirit to guide.
A r t
Q u a l i t yOften, artists misrepresent the Scripture, but unless the error is material, licentious or heretical I usually include the artwork, trusting that the Spirit is perfectly capable of defending Himself. So, with such forgiving filters, it means that you're seeing practically everything I'm finding.
The Protestant Canon does not (for several reasons) follow a strictly chronological sequence. There are many examples where, for God's good purposes, stories are told out-of-order. Nevertheless, for the sake of simplicity, clarity, and my sanity, I have chosen to proceed linearly and methodically from Genesis onward, illustrating each Bible passage as we come to it. Where two passages cover the same incident I omit the second telling, excepting the four Gospels which I will treat synoptically. Now, onward!
T e x t
S e q u e n c i n gThe pace here may seem appallingly snail-like to those eager to see their favorite events illustrated. My commission is to search for art on each Bible passage in sequence: if I find enough, then it becomes the next installment, even if undramatic (but where there is little or no art, that Bible passage goes untold here).
P a c i n g Then, there is the human element: this is not actually a daily series, because I can only research, compose, edit and post five or six of these installments weekly. And because I only get to do this series once, I'm taking my time, chiefly by posting everything; if I find lots of art, I don't cherry-pick some and discard the rest. Rather, I line up all of them and then sort them into manageable bunches, often resulting in multiple days' episodes of the same story. Obviously, I like being thorough. Were you in a big hurry?
The Bible is a thick book, as you know; but we'll get there eventually, Lord willing—this is His project, after all. And always remember:
love, joy, peace, patience kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness & self-control is a fruit of the Spirit!. .
Art is merely the Toy Department of Bible study,
so I'm just having fun here—I hope you are, too!
Thank you for your understanding.Hebrews 11:6

A feast! Many thanks!
Felt a lot of responsibility in illustrating such a widely-beloved psalm, so yours is the kind of reaction I covet.
When we feel lost and worried let’s remember that our Good Shepherd is always in control. This Psalm always lifts my spirit, especially at this moment when everything seems so hopeless. Thank you for today’s wonderful page. Great illustrations!
Our local funeral home, with seating for 400, has the first line of this consoling psalm displayed prominently up-front-and-center, above where the casket or flower-bank sits. The same shepherd Who allows us to walk into the dark valley also leads us out.
The healing wisdom of this Psalm....
Today’s theme is so apropos for this current place in time, not that it’s not always apropos, but especially now with evil forces tightening their grip on humanity.
Love the table of contents for the episodes.
Thank you Dan.
Glad you like my sausage factory: lots o' links.
A Blessed Sunday To You, Dan! :-)
And to you, Mary-Lou! Did you tickle those ivories until they begged for mercy?
Guess you’d excel at Ragtime, too.
LOL.
His itinerary is Boston >>> LA >>> Cooperstown.
We heard this psalm every morning in auditorium in a public elementary school. Consequently, I know it by heart.
One day in Starbucks I was talking to a friend from a nearby facility who was having deep problems. I mentioned that I knew this psalm by memory and he said “Say it.”
So I did. Everybody on our side of the Starbucks was listening.
I think he is doing much better. I can see it, and his life is improving as well. I pray for him whenever I think of him.
“He restoreth my soul” is one of the most beautiful lines of poetry ever written, I think.
Thanks for this wonderful thread.
I pray for him whenever I think of him.
I expect, and perhaps you agree, that it is the Spirit bringing him to your awareness precisely in order for you to pray for him. Happens to me all the time.
Interesting "coincidence", isn't it, that your first thread as a "pingee" hit home so squarely.
I didn’t think of that. Nice “coincidence.”
And the bit about learning a part of the Bible by heart is not only for your own benefit but also for the benefit of others.
Good thoughts to keep with me.
