CHAPTER 22

For the director of music. To the tune of “The Doe of the Morning.” A psalm of David.

1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me,
so far from my cries of anguish?
2 My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer,
by night, but I find no rest.

3 Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;
you are the one Israel praises.
4 In you our ancestors put their trust;
they trusted and you delivered them.
5 To you they cried out and were saved;
in you they trusted and were not put to shame.

6 But I am a worm and not a man,
scorned by everyone, despised by the people.
7 All who see me mock me;
they hurl insults, shaking their heads.
8 “He trusts in the LORD,” they say,
“let the LORD rescue him.
Let him deliver him,
since he delights in him.”

9 Yet you brought me out of the womb;
you made me trust in you, even at my mother’s breast.
10 From birth I was cast on you;
from my mother’s womb you have been my God.

11 Do not be far from me,
for trouble is near
and there is no one to help.

12 Many bulls surround me;
strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.
13 Roaring lions that tear their prey
open their mouths wide against me.
14 I am poured out like water,
and all my bones are out of joint.
My heart has turned to wax;
it has melted within me.
15 My mouth is dried up like a potsherd,
and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth;
you lay me in the dust of death.

16 Dogs surround me,
a pack of villains encircles me;
they pierce my hands and my feet.
17 All my bones are on display;
people stare and gloat over me.
18 They divide my clothes among them
and cast lots for my garment.

19 But you, LORD, do not be far from me.
You are my strength; come quickly to help me.
20 Deliver me from the sword,
my precious life from the power of the dogs.
21 Rescue me from the mouth of the lions;
save me from the horns of the wild oxen.

22 I will declare your name to my people;
in the assembly I will praise you.
23 You who fear the LORD, praise him!
All you descendants of Jacob, honor him!
Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!
24 For he has not despised or scorned
the suffering of the afflicted one;
he has not hidden his face from him
but has listened to his cry for help.

25 From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly;
before those who fear you I will fulfill my vows.
26 The poor will eat and be satisfied;
those who seek the LORD will praise him—
may your hearts live forever!

27 All the ends of the earth
will remember and turn to the LORD,
and all the families of the nations
will bow down before him,
28 for dominion belongs to the LORD
and he rules over the nations.

29 All the rich of the earth will feast and worship;
all who go down to the dust will kneel before him—
those who cannot keep themselves alive.
30 Posterity will serve him;
future generations will be told about the Lord.
31 They will proclaim his righteousness,
declaring to a people yet unborn:
He has done it!

NOTES ON MY SELECTION CRITERIA

A r t
Q u a l i t y
The Bible and its Author are my focus, not the art: this is The Bible in Paintings, not "Great Paintings" nor even "Good Paintings." So, works need not be masterpieces to qualify for inclusion here—they don't need to be housed at the Louvre nor auctioned by Sotheby's. They only need to illustrate successfully some aspect of the Biblical text or, frankly, just tickle my fancy, which I'm always asking the Holy Spirit to guide.

Often, artists misrepresent the Scripture, but unless the error is material, licentious or heretical I usually include the artwork, trusting that the Spirit is perfectly capable of defending Himself. So, with such forgiving filters, it means that you're seeing practically everything I'm finding.

T e x t
S e q u e n c i n g
The Protestant Canon does not (for several reasons) follow a strictly chronological sequence. There are many examples where, for God's good purposes, stories are told out-of-order. Nevertheless, for the sake of simplicity, clarity, and my sanity, I have chosen to proceed linearly and methodically from Genesis onward, illustrating each Bible passage as we come to it. Where two passages cover the same incident I omit the second telling, excepting the four Gospels which I will treat synoptically. Now, onward!

P a c i n g
The pace here may seem appallingly snail-like to those eager to see their favorite events illustrated. My commission is to search for art on each Bible passage in sequence: if I find enough, then it becomes the next installment, even if undramatic (but where there is little or no art, that Bible passage goes untold here).

Then, there is the human element: this is not actually a daily series, because I can only research, compose, edit and post five or six of these installments weekly. And because I only get to do this series once, I'm taking my time, chiefly by posting everything; if I find lots of art, I don't cherry-pick some and discard the rest. Rather, I line up all of them and then sort them into manageable bunches, often resulting in multiple days' episodes of the same story. Obviously, I like being thorough. Were you in a big hurry?

The Bible is a thick book, as you know; but we'll get there eventually, Lord willing—this is His project, after all. And always remember:
love, joy, peace, patience kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness & self-control is a fruit of the Spirit!

. .

Art is merely the Toy Department of Bible study,
so I'm just having fun here—I hope you are, too!
Thank you for your understanding.

SPECIAL NOTE TO ART LOVERS

This series illustrates the Bible, primarily using art.
But when artists ignore a passage, as in today's,
sometimes we can tell the story using photographs.
We'll be back to art very, very soon.

I don't know that the Bible ever specifically answers your question, which leaves us to reason our way to the answer. Others may wish to comment as well, but here is what I understand to be the consensus view.

Jesus, fully God and fully man, had always been closely intimate with God the Father and the Holy Spirit. But Jesus went voluntarily onto that cross precisely to take our sins onto Himself. In doing so, He suffered the same alienation, forsaking, from God that we do when we sin, and He felt it excruciatingly and lamented it audibly.

A God's-eye view. Good job, Salvador! I hadn't seen that before--thanks for adding it, Mary-Lou.

I must say, I find the prospect of interacting with the tens of thousands of crucifixion images to be daunting. But I think Dali's, by virtue of its unique perspective, just qualified. And when that time comes, if I forget to include it, I trust you will.

You think Jesus went voluntarily? I didn’t realize he had a choice.... People get mad at me, but I believe we have somewhat of a cruel God....not Jesus...jus God. He always so much pain, suffering, cruelty....for innocents. Just always bothered me..

The most dramatic painting on the Crucifixion is this by Salvador Dali, in my opinion. As if seen from the eye of God. One of the most poignant Psalm, in his extreme suffering Jesus has a very human experience, this sense of abandonment, of being forsaken. It is the cry of humanity, of the suffering all experience in “the dark night of our soul”.

You think Jesus went voluntarily? I didn’t realize he had a choice

In John 12:27, Jesus Himself claimed that He went to the cross voluntarily:

"Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour."

As for your allegation that God (which includes Jesus) is cruel, another view is that He is just. You argue against that by claiming He abuses "innocents," but none of us is innocent, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23

“He always so much pain, suffering, cruelty....for innocents.”

From a Christian perspective, there are no innocents. We are a race of sinners, and there can be no sin without suffering, or the world would not be just.

2 Corinthians 5:21

“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

Will look up more verses, have been taught that sin cannot be in the presence of God.

Also, that this forsaking lasted about 3 hours total. Checking Matthew 27.

You argue for a temporary and brief forsaking, but there is a counterargument for a kind of permanent abandonment.

How can Jesus, by a "mere" six hours of excruciation followed by physical death, adequately atone for my sins and yours, to stand in for our eternity in hell that we justly deserve? The answer may be, in some tens of billions of extra dimensions that God has complete freedom to create, that Jesus voluntarily is still on that cross for all eternity--indeed, a separate "version" of Him for each one of us.

That Jesus would volunteer to suffer and die for us immediately debunks any thought that God is in any sense anything less than love, as the Bible claims. Yet if the scenario I suggest is true, one instantly understands why all the saints in heaven praise Him continually.

Glad you like it, Pat.

I was hearing numerous people lamenting, "I'm just finding this series and I've missed SO MANY episodes!" I felt embarrassed in directing them to FR's Search function, which just isn't designed to facilitate a series with this many installments, clicking through page after page.

I finally realized--much too late--that the Spirit was trying to get my attention and do something about it. Now, they're all visible at one glance.

I was able to cut and paste into a word document so I could go to whatever without being on FR. I’m glad you listened to the Holy Spirit’s guidance.
