LEICESTER, United Kingdom - Catholic schools in the Republic of Ireland can no longer give preference to Catholic students.
Richard Bruton, the Irish Minister for Education and Skills, made the announcement Oct. 3 on Twitter.
Unlike in the United States, the government funds religious schools in Ireland, and about 96 percent of elementary schools in the country are under the patronage of a religious group, and approximately 90 percent of these schools are run by the Catholic Church.
In some areas of the country - mostly in and around the capital Dublin - there are more students seeking places in certain Catholic schools than are available. These oversubscribed schools can choose students belonging to the schools denomination over students who live closer to the campus. Non-Catholic parents have complained about this barrier barrier keeping their children from going to the closest school.
Schools run by minority religions, primarily the Anglican Church of Ireland, will still be allowed to give preference to their own members, which Bruton said was needed to allow members of faith minorities access to a school of their own religion. The government minister said Catholics did not need this special protection, since the vast majority of primary schools are run by the Catholic Church.
The order which I am signing today will ensure greater fairness in school admissions, Bruton said. The Act will create greater confidence for parents that the admission criteria laid down by schools and the procedures used by them are visible, legitimate, reasonable and fair.

What a deplorable, leftist s-—hole my ancestral homeland has become.
Beat me by 7 minutes.
When the Church takes the govts coin... well he who pays the fiddler calls the tune. Lesson to those in the Church who long for the state to support their schools. When I tauhht in Catholic schools in Brooklyn, Queens and The Bronx we had minimal support, textbooks and transportation, and monies for attendance keeping. That was it. So when it came to what we taught we were not guided by the city schools and the state curricula were suggestive.
This is beyond belief!!!!!!!!!!
T’is a shame t’is! Me ancestral home and people have all turned in a lot of fecking ejits!
Correct. Irish Catholics have no one to blame but themselves.
They are entirely government funded-———if they eliminate that they might have more say on who to admit.
.
If they cant root them out, they will breed them out.
Accepting Government funding leads to government control
If they don’t tell the gov’t to go to hell they’re not men. Simple.
The Irish turned their backs on the Catholic Church had a huge over reaction to real problems they have not and cannot solve following the path they have followed. I too am saddened and embarrassed by my family’s homeland.
Nearly all primary and middle schools are Catholic in origin - and they are funded by the government.
Its a blessing and a curse. Take politicians money, and you will eventually be forced to dance to their tune.
Makes me realize the wisdom of the Founding Fathers even more.
When the government gives you money it has bought you.
Good friend just returned from three weeks with his wife’s relatives. Told me Ireland is now a pagan country. Sunday Masses are empty and her relatives, ages 40s to 60s, havent been to Mass in years.
