I learned today "Oprah" Winfrey was born "Orpah" Winfrey.
"Orpah" is a very interesting Biblical name, one up there with Hamen and Pharoah.
It means, in this context "neck" and is a specific reference to turning away from G-d.
Specifically, Orpah was the sister and sister-in-law of Ruth, married to Chillion.
When the two brothers died, their mother-in-law (Naomi) urged the sisters to return to their people and to their "gods."
Ruth refused.
Orpah gladly recanted her adopted people and G-d, and went back to Moab. There she "gave" herself to so many men she was likened to a threshing floor.
After her adventures, she bore four giant sons, one of which was Goliath.
Another giant son was Ishbi-benob, who was killed by David's right-hand-general, Abishai.
Abishai, himself, killed Orpah with a spindle.
Anyway, Orpah is easily one of the foulest, most anti-Semitic, women in the entire Bible, and it is very strange to name a kid after her.
I hear with Oprah it is women, though I don't have any numbers obviously. But someone probably does.
Sorry you are getting a bunch of flak. What has become evident, is that ancient stories/allegories describing events of the past have become literal realities in the present.
Thus it's all flipped over. People mock these accounts as myths, not realizing that the chronology is turned over. If the mythology of the past becomes the reality of today, then it's not really a myth.
Examples are the secret code of the Redemption (how it is a secret code if everyone knows the code) and that Serach is the one who confirms the identity of the Redeemer. Then there's the Ohr Rishon, it goes on.
Then what will people say about the traditions?
God takes the traditions and makes reality happen.
"And ye shall know that I am the Lord."
Gotta marvel.
Yes, but remember: Everyone had to have something to do to occupy the first 6000 years of the Salvation Plan. I am so thankful to be here at the end!
Thanks for posting!
Why did G-d create Mormons? So one sect of Christians would know how Jews feel.
So, if the Mormons say they have a new revelation, and you the (Catholic, Baptist) are therefor incomplete without it, after all, G-d didn’t come down and address the millions assembled in upstate NY to give His new message, right? If you don’t believe the Mormons’ claim, why on earth would a Jew believe your fantasies?
You've got to keep in mind that not one in a thousand non-Jews knows anything about the Talmud, and not one in a million non-Jews considers it either historically accurate or religiously authoritative.
So , you reject the Talmud? Interesting position for a Nazarene given your entire religion relies on it.
As for the other point, you’ve stumbled into the Jewish subgroup.
The alliance between Orpahs Moabite father and the Philistenes has already been discussed here. You don’t even need a Talmud for that one, try archaeology.
thank you.
(people believe the sources and portions of those sources, that they wish to believe or that their parents or clerics recommend......so there’s a great deal of diversity of belief, even when the number of major sources is rather small)
this is just the way things are.
I have had interesting discussions dealing with the correct interpretation of Biblical prophecies .. wherein to save their position the proponents of Christological verses have found it necessary to try citing certain Talmudic or other rabbinic writings to save or shore up their contentions.’
And, obviously, many times the shoe is on the other foot, ha!
Conclusion... people will start out with a pretty clear general position about which sources they accept and which they do not. But, when they get into difficulty, especially I think in the area of prophetic interpretation, they will often rush over to the other church or synagogue and grab sources that they personally would normally never consult.
there is relatively little really new under the sun, ha!
thanks
Probably. But see post 32.
There is also Goliath was from Gath, and not from any place in Moab. Gath is to the West of Bethlehem, Moab is generally to the south west. The Moabites and Philistines are, moreover, two entirely separate peoples.
The Bible is certainly the ultimate source of truth, and we know from Ruth 1:15 that Naomi told Ruth "Behold, thy sister in law [Orpah] is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods." Orpah might have been persuaded to do so, but Ruth was similarly persuaded and refused to turn her back on Naomi or the God of Israel.
That said, the Bible is not the only source of history. There is historical evidence of a political alliance between the Eglon King of Moab and the Philistine king of Gath, and it is believed that Orpah was remarried to one of the giants still living in Moab. It would not be inconsistent with similar biblical themes in which a bad choice results in enmity and strife between successive generations of Israel and its enemies.
Well said and written. Thank you.
These were written several centuries before the Talmud, in the period immediately preceding the events of the NT. These writings--- very familiar to Jesus and the NT authors, who read the Bible in its Septuagint editions --- formed the historic and theological matrix of the writing of the NT.
Some 85% of the OT quotes found in the pages of the New Testament are taken from the Septuagint.
The Catholics and the Orthodox retained these Biblical books. The Protestants and Talmudists rejected them.
Did jewbacca ever explain this? It sounds like it can’t be the bible’s version and his talmud version.
Yes. Keep reading.
I read the entire thread. You didn’t explain his concerns that Goliath couldn’t be from both Gat9h as well as Moab. Which is it and how could the Talmud be so far off geographically from the Biblical version?
Who’s his daddy?
no idea, maybe a nephilim that took one of the women of this earth to lie with...
Also explain how a human female will give birth to a literal giant.
Who else?
“Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of Gods elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began and at the proper time manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior;”Titus 1
