I learned today "Oprah" Winfrey was born "Orpah" Winfrey.
"Orpah" is a very interesting Biblical name, one up there with Hamen and Pharoah.
It means, in this context "neck" and is a specific reference to turning away from G-d.
Specifically, Orpah was the sister and sister-in-law of Ruth, married to Chillion.
When the two brothers died, their mother-in-law (Naomi) urged the sisters to return to their people and to their "gods."
Ruth refused.
Orpah gladly recanted her adopted people and G-d, and went back to Moab. There she "gave" herself to so many men she was likened to a threshing floor.
After her adventures, she bore four giant sons, one of which was Goliath.
Another giant son was Ishbi-benob, who was killed by David's right-hand-general, Abishai.
Abishai, himself, killed Orpah with a spindle.
Anyway, Orpah is easily one of the foulest, most anti-Semitic, women in the entire Bible, and it is very strange to name a kid after her.
Orpah!? That’s funny!
Nothing like that is said of Orpah in the bible. Naomi and Ruth both loved her. Read it in Ruth 1 and see that I’m right.
Sorry you don’t have the complete Tanukah and Talmud.
There’s a reason this is posted in the Jewish group, in that the entire text is needed for an actual understanding of the events. You’re hamstrung with only about 1/5 of the actual Word of G-d.
If you’d like wikipedia has much the same information:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orpah
I’m guessing that Orpah’s parents never read the Talmud, because most of what you said isn’t in the Bible.
You are correct. Where did the fairy tale come from?
Lololol!
G-d.
Mustve been one of those “Jewish myths” apostle Paul warned against.
just for clarification, I do not recall anything in the Bible that Oprah was anti-Semitic (she merely went home is all that I can remember). do correct me if I am in error. thanks
Yeah; I heard her mother was going for “Orpah”, a Bible name, but there was a mis-spelling or something. “Laquisha” is much easier; should-a just gone with that.
La DASH A.
True story.
Orpah was a Moabite, not a Philisitine.
No other mention of Orpah is found in the Bible..........
I remember hearing Oprah say - many, many years ago on the Johnny Carson show - that she was named “Orpah”, but whoever filled out her birth certificate spelled it wrong, so she was legally “Oprah”.
this is just oprahfication aka psychobabble to confuse low information voters.
see bill Clinton’s oprahfication.
Ruth and Orpah were sisters, or at least sisters-in-law. Ruth was David's great-grandmother. In order for adult David's General Abishai to kill Orpah, she would have had to have been ancient................
You are. The sources are above.
I heard she was named Opera but the pronunciation was wrong.
Where did you get your information? Further, no son of Orpah’s would be a contemporary of David, as there were several generations between Ruth and David (I’d have to check, but I think it was four generations between). Please cite your sources. This doesn’t add up.
