Nun shocks Church by suggesting Jesus’s mother wasn’t a virgin

A Catholic nun in Spain has caused outrage after she suggested that the Virgin Mary may not have been a virgin after all. The controversial Dominican nun invited the ire of the Catholic Church who responded to her statements in anger.

Sister Lucia Caram was speaking on a talk show over the weekend when she let slip her belief that contradicts one of the key pillars of her faith.

“I think that Mary was in love with Joseph and that they were a normal couple, and the normal thing is to have sex,” Caram told Risto Mejideon during Sunday’s Chester in Love programme.

According to Roman Catholic faith, the Virgin Mary is believed to have become pregnant with Jesus, the son of God, by immaculate conception.

"It’s hard to believe and to take in. We’ve stuck with rules that we have invented without reaching the true message,” she added.

Isn’t it a known fact that Jesus had a brother?

... the Virgin Mary is believed to have become pregnant with Jesus, the son of God, by immaculate conception.

Error. The Immaculate Conception is the conception of Mary (naturally, by her parents) without Original Sin.

As for the "outrageous" nun, who hasn't heard all this before? It's impossible to come up with a new false belief; they've all been done to death.

Naw. It was just a cousin, doncha know. After all, Joseph was told to not have sex with Mary until after Jesus was born. This clearly means that Joseph never had sex with Mary.

I mean, how else can you interpret it? ;-)

And here is a fun exercise: Look at every verse in the new testament where Jesus is talking specifically about his mother. What do you think his attitude is?

I think the dogma of Christ’s birth from a virgin, and Joseph’s lack of relations with her prior to Jesus’ birth, is nearly universally accepted among Christians.

The dogma of Mary’s perpetual virginity, OTOH, is not, and for good reason, Jesus’ brothers being among them.

Really? I’m not seeing that anywhere in the gospels, which is where this thing is covered pretty thoroughly.

You're saying his attitude was something other than perfect obedience to the commandment "Honor thy father and thy mother"???

He had several brothers. But I’ve always thought it strange that Joseph just seems to disappears after Jesus is born. Other than being a witness that an angel visited him be apparently wasn’t a big part of the story.

Jesus had brothers and sisters.

It is very clear in the gospels.

It would seem that this is likely not about Mary being a virgin when Jesus was born but about the tradition that she remained so forever afterwards.

The latter is merely a tradition unsupported by Scripture. As is the belief that she was somehow born without sin herself (which only puts any perceived issues with Mary having a normal human nature off on her own mother, never mind cutting her own familial ties with the different guys, from Abraham on, who had expressly been given the promise that their seed was the one who was promised).

Dear nun,

Thank you for your opinion. You aren’t the first to decide your personal opinion is what matters most in the world.

Your opinion doesn’t mesh with the historical record.

So, tell me again why I should gives a rat’s patooty about your personal opinion?

Partial list —

Creation of the world.
Creation of Man.
The Flood.
Virgin birth of Jesus.
Miracles of Jesus.
Bringing Lazarus back from the dead.
Resurrection of Jesus.

We are called to believe any number of “difficult things”. If you somehow think that God is not capable of these things, then maybe becoming a nun was a bad career choice.

Nope. What I am saying is: Look at every verse in the new testament where Jesus is talking specifically about his mother. What do you think his attitude is?

That is a question, not a statement.

Nothing in Scripture calls those "brothers" the son of Mary, or of Joseph for that matter. James and Joses are called the "brothers of the Lord" but they are also called "sons of Alphaeus".

As the Lutheran scholar Joachim Jeremias has noted, an obedient Jew can't absolve another Jew of his duty under the Law, so Jesus giving Mary over to John (not a blood relative) to be cared for was committing a serious sin -- as practically his last act on earth, no less! -- if he had living siblings.
