All orthodox (Eastern and Western) did not even question Mary’s perpetual virginity until the third or fourth generations after the Reformation (meaning Luther did not even contemplate this). Without context, translations can be misleading. Thus, Catholics and Orthodox to this day rely on interpretations based in the great Traditions of our ancestors. Just one example, St Jerome was crystal clear that these were not Mary’s children. Do you really think no one understood this passage for 1700 years until a translation was published?
