Or "more good."
Did Joseph Smith, Jr. write the article on the etymology of the word 'mormon' attributed to him in the May 15, 1843 issue of Times and Seasons? Is 'mon' Reformed Egyptian for 'good,' as the article says?
Did Joseph Smith, Jr.'s scribe, William Wines Phelps, write the article instead of Smith?
LDS President Gordon B. Hinckley said the 'more good' translation is incorrect, but you'll find it everywhere.

Not a surprise. Way too generic. Like the Pope trying to TM “Catholic.”

This has me wondering if there’s a Machiavellian FReeper out there who can figure a way of provoking the Mormons and the Scientologists to sue each other into oblivion?

Was that effort anywhere close to when the Mormons started their effort to stop being called Mormons?

I was raised to believe that 'Mormon' was a slur, and it's work for me to use the term as it is embraced by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as Latter-Day Saints. As a result, you may notice that I try to refer to members of the COJCOLDS as Latter-Day Saints or LDS. I find myself using the term "Mormon" to refer to fundamentalist offshoots of the COJCOLDS.
I try to refer to the Community of Christ as the Community of Christ, Strangites as Strangites, Bickertonites as Bickertonites, and so on. However, if someone wants to break Hedrickites down to Fettingites, Elijah Messengers, Hancockites, and Halley's Bluffers, I quit.

The SL “mormonS” are nothing like what Joseph Smith/Brigham Young started, it is off shoots that remain in the vision especially that group led by Jeffs.
The SL “mormonS” should pick a new name, the others use it.

I agree, they made it all up, therefore its theirs. It should be treated in the same way as any other work of fiction.IMO, mormons are welcome to the name....they just are NOT entitled to call themselves "Christian"! There is nothing about the sect that has anything to do with the teachings of and belief in Jesus Christ, regardless of their stealing the name of Jesus and the lie of sticking it into their sect's name!!

Good point.
I can’t tell you the number of times I listed why I did not like Romney, only to have some one reply “you bigot”, “you hate mormonS”.
