The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (acting through Intellectual Reserve, Inc.) applied for a trademark on "Mormon" in 2002.

If I look up the status of that application at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, it appears the application was abandoned on August 22, 2007.

Was that effort anywhere close to when the Mormons started their effort to stop being called Mormons?
