It happened again yesterday. I was attending one of those hip, contemporary churches and almost no one sang. Worshippers stood obediently as the band rocked out, the smoke machine belched and lights flashed. Lyrics were projected on the screen, but almost no one sang them. A few women were trying, but I saw only one male (other than the worship leader) making the attempt.

My choir director calls most worship music ‘7-11’ songs: seven lines repeated eleven times!
Interesting, had noticed a drop in congregational singing as well, which I find quite sad. Singing praise songs together is a much more wonderful thing than simply listening to them sung. The quality of the music is not as important as everybody just singing however well they were meant to sing in praise of God.
Hehehehehe...I love loud, rockin' music. But not in Church. I never sing hymns, anyway.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
I agree completely. It’s not a recording studio, it’s a house of worship. Let the people’s voices rise to the heavens!
My church, well everyone sings. I think the problem may be reliance on Praise Teams rather than a choir.
Choirs inspire people to sing and boy do they. Several visiting pastors have commented on it.
Choirs rule.....
I have often wondered if the Good Lord has to shield his eyes when he looks at a “contemporary service” or a megachurch with 25,000 members.
Congratulations!!! Way to go.
And video the scene.
I’ll donate $10.00 to the charity of your choice if you post it on FR.
Ping singing in church
A change in the music director. He retired. And the newly hired person is of very classical and orthodox views. I’m so glad we are getting some chant back.
And not the sing-songy stuff that is in the OCP book.
We also have a new Archbishop who is very up on music. One of the first things he did was charge OCP with putting out Catholic art on the covers, and including more chant in the music section.
My 19 year old daughter loves loud rock.
Except in church. She demands Hymns and an organ.
Oh, she sings Italian opera. When not jamming with a garage band that is.
Seven-Eleven songs are seven WORDS repeated eleven times.
If it was within driving distance of me I’d do it. But if I was to do something like this it wouldn’t just be one vuvuzela but a whole group of them. Think of it like an ImprovEverywhere public prank but with a good purpose.
Didn’t the Temple in Jerusalem have priests who blew silver trumpets?
There ya go! Old, old school rules!
Why do you attend this church? It doesn’t sound as if you like the church. I’d find a true church home if I was you. I can’t stand mega-churches and new wave churches
What a stupid article. As long as the congregants are focused on the worship of God in the music, who cares whether they sing or not?
I’ve been equally moved in church by singing traditional hymns myself as well as celebrating God in the beautiful music/voices of others.
As a former Shoutin’ Methodist, I find this hard to accept....
