The Age of the Universe
GeraldSchroeder.com ^ | Gerald Schroeder

We look back in time, and say the universe is 15 billion years old. But as every scientist knows, when we say the universe is 15 billion years old, there's another half of the sentence that we rarely bother to say. The other half of the sentence is: The universe is 15 billion years old as seen from the time-space coordinates of the earth.

The key is that the Torah looks forward in time, from very different time-space coordinates, when the universe was small. Since then, the universe has expanded out. Space stretches, and that stretching of space totally changes the perception of time.

That’s why it is called fiction.

Nevertheless a totally fascinating topic....and who says we cannot speculate? We were given imaginations for a reason. I, for one, wish I had such an imagination!

And how does it just so happen that the God that created this universe is a holy God without sin? Perfect in every way? Could it just as easily have been a god of evil? That’s what I wonder.

There's only one God and he decided what was sin and what was not...And just by looking around, I'd say he pegged it pretty good...

Google him if you know his name and the area where he lives. Be surprised who you can find very easily with little effort.

They knew how to write. But the translation is several times removed from anything original.

Show us the original...

I do have to disagree with this, Jack. Might look that way from a human perspective, but that is where the “faith” MHGinTN spoke of comes into play.

At some point, we will just have to trust Him and realize we really don’t know it all yet.

Will we know everything once with Him in eternity? Does anyone want to take a stab at that? :)

“On the contrary, we appear to be degenerating faster than corn through a goose.”

So geese can digest corn? Nice, why can’t we? :)

Boils down to “it’s a matter of perspective.” Right?

But, “whose” perspective.

Anything outside space and time as opposed to anything inside space and time...of course, this makes sense and something I’ve always inherently known but have never seen explained.

Thanks for this!

I don't know about any of that in the Jewish sense but the six days of Creation are very important for Christians...

I didn't mean to imply that the 6 days of creation were not important. I think it is a fundamental point for any believer that God created the universe. I thought Gerald Schroeder's point that time is a matter of perspective reconciles the Biblical and naturalists views.

Great summary!

I'm glad you got something out of this, I did too.

This article is very interesting but in my mind it is impossible to measure. I think Christians have a harder time believing in a real Adam and Eve then they do in believing the world was created in six days.

Got a lot out of this! And am now sharing with others.

My mother was asking the other day where the souls of babies come from before they are born, so I sent her the part in this article that talks about the “soul” creation.

I wrote her this and sent her the link to the article:

Mom,

Mentions the “soul” creation of animals and humans....when you asked the question about where do the souls of babies come from at birth.

Not exactly the whole answer, I’m sure, but something to mull on.

Maybe all souls were created at the beginning, like everything else, and only come into the physical realm/creation when the “time” comes and they are ready to be born?

Jody

I also sent her the Schroeder article The Two Souls of Humankind...seems there are a lot more nefesh on this planet than neshamah. :)

I agree with you. My first reaction though was to condemn Christians for a lack of faith, but is it really surprising when you are raised in a society that elevates science and marginalizes God and faith in Him. I don't see this "new normal" changing. I believe it will get worse.

That’s love? That’s the ideal of fatherhood?

There was no fall of man, it was a push.

You have not come back regarding your question ( if i believed i was created,) which i answered yes, but after thinking about it i realized we may not think so different.

Yes i believe an all knowing God would have known that the ones he created would do just what he told them not to do,

Any one who have ever had children is aware of this.

But they still had a choice, and after they took of the forbidden fruit they still had a choice because they knew good from evil.

Birds and most other animals gets pushed out of the nest and i think it was no different with man and woman.

Adam was pushed to leave his father and cling to his wife and they were pushed out of the garden of Eden, if not for the partaking of the forbidden fruit there may not have been any children, it may have been just Adam and Eve, i would not be here.

When i say we have a choice, i say it very softly because i did not come to believe in Jesus Christ by choice, in fact i fought it.

I do not take every thing i read in genius literal, i take it as an explanation just like you would explain some deep subject to a small child.

For instance ( where did i come from ) a stork brought you:

In my case they would have told me that i was hatched under a rock.

Ok, so i think i have been enlightened, but maybe in fact it would just be called stupidity, but where do i go from here?

I still believe God is the creator of the universe, i believe that Jesus is the son of God.
