.- Pope Francis lives very simply, brings a pastoral approach to his ministry, and is a man of prayer, according to the Vatican’s press office director.
Father Thomas Rosica, the English-language assistant for the Vatican press office, told journalists at a hastily arranged March 13 press briefing that he talked to Pope Francis this past Sunday.
“Sunday night we were out for a walk and he pulled me over. He took me by the hand and said, 'I want you to pray for me. I’m a little nervous right now.'”
In February 2001, Fr. Rosica was at a meeting in Buenos Aires of the bishops from throughout Latin America to promote World Youth Day in Canada. He was told that Archbishop Bergoglio was going to celebrate Mass for the people at the meeting.
“So I went in earlier, and sat and prayed in the back. And I saw this man come in with a simple black cassock and knelt in front of me and prayed for the longest time. And then when he came out in the procession, it was the archbishop.”
Later he told Fr. Rosica that he lived “very simply in an apartment in Argentina,” where he took care of “a handicapped Jesuit.”
Pope Francis also said that he cooks for himself and rides the bus to work.
For his part, Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi said that he is still “shocked” at the news that a fellow Jesuit was elected Pope.
Fr. Lombardi said he does not know the new Pope well – although he met him once at a General Congregation of the Jesuits – but that one could see his simple spirituality and pastoral sense in his first remarks.
“I didn’t expect it to be white this evening. The choice shows courage on the part of the cardinals. It’s the first time we have a Pope from another continent,” Fr. Lombardi remarked.
Pope Francis will be inaugurated on March 19, the Feast of St. Joseph, at 9:30 a.m. in St. Peter’s Square.
He looks like Pope George to me.
“Sunday night we were out for a walk and he pulled me over. He took me by the hand and said, ‘I want you to pray for me. Im a little nervous right now.’”
It’s almost like he knew he’d become Pope.
Well, now Pope Francis doesn’t have to cook or take the bus to work. :)
Viva il Papa!
This is a man who lives the life of Jesus.
Simple and with a humble spirit.
They couldn’t find a better man to lead the church. Someone who is not puffed up with pride and a lust for power and personal gain is hard to find in this world.
They found him in this conclave in the person of Francis!
I was struck by his humility and quiet strength. All of my concerns are gone.
No more siestas for him....
I haven’t been a practicing Catholic for quite some time. But after seeing the Holy Father today, I am sure the church is in good hands. I look forward to the changes to come.

God bless you. I was anxious about this conclave, so my relief at its outcome is complete. When Pope Francis spoke this afternoon, I was at peace.
I just hope that he’s not a socialist, and that he does not promote one world government.
“They couldn't find a better man to lead the church, a man who lives the life of Jesus.
Simple and with a humble spirit.”
You did an Outstanding job with those words, well done!!
i sure hope he stays simple and not puffed up. he wil get a chance to start with a clean slate curia as well, his picks for this will indicate much as to how his leadership will be.
me too, but i would guess he isn’t a socialist. at his age and stature, he’d have been living a high on the hog as an elite socialist ruling class, and by every account i’ve read he doesn’t live like that.
“, the new Pope said “I choose the name Francis, in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi.”
Good news for critters?
All well and good lets see what he does with his errant Jesuit brothers of the cloth as in Georgetown or Notre Dame. I’m not too impressed with his approaches dealing with the Argentine government on the moral issues. Bus rides to work and home cooking et all. When I’ve talked to missionaries while fund raising here promoting the faith smack dab in the middle of moslemland and their people are being murdered and the fund raiser (priest) was summarialy dissmissive of moslem activity which amazed and dumbfounded me .I think we have a problem. Worse yet I see this from other sources on the latin side. I envy you being able to participate in rituals and services relatively unchanged since St Pauls time .If I had a an opportiinity to particpate in them I’d be there. Actually I held out hope your guy would make it.
Lets seen what Francis I does with the corruption in the secretariat. If he appoints Ben the 16th to run it watch heads roll. I am happy they took the papacy it out of europe and particularly Italy. I’m weary of the Borgia legacy.
hard to tell. my guys don’t talk that much. :-)
seriously, i don’t know. i know already the animals are innocent, their spirits return to their Creator, and when God makes everything new again, they will be back.
Good news for the world!
It would be nice to see a pope with a big heart for animals, though.
