'The Bible' miniseries produced by the History Channel is a disappointment for any family hoping for a new way to share the Bible's stories with their children. 'The Bible' miniseries, not altogether surprising given the History Channel's relentless ratings focus, sensationalizes the Bible's stories. Angel ninjas? Really?
The Bible, in addition to being the basis for various religious beliefs, is a fascinating historical conglomeration of stories that can teach us about the customs, times, travails, and conditions of the ancient Middle East that create a social context for modern day news, like the plague of locusts currently hitting Egypt. However "The Bible" miniseries on the History Channel so graphically depicts a predictably selective collection of the stories that some parents may not want kids to view it.
"The Bible" miniseries, for me, is less about what you believe and more about what you believe your family will take away from watching this series. After watching the first installment and trailers for upcoming episodes, I think that if youre not willing to let your elementary-school child watch "300" and the "Twilight" series you should steer clear of this as a family viewing session.

exactly, it seems some complain there is nothing Christian on TV and when it does then the same people still complain.
it gave is the basics and enough for some people to become interested in the Bible and Christianity I think.
Like you said , if it draws just one more person into finding out more than so be it, good as for this family , well my wife and I watched it and will now let the kids watch it.
Like you said aslo, this was not Bible study , this was a program showing the basics and as for when did he have a Scottish accent or the angel was a Ninja, well that is so out of whack IMHO.
Lets just be grateful that there is a show like this on and stop complaining about accents or Ninja or fighting.
I had quickly turned it on and was still focused on getting settled down to watch when I thought I heard Sean Connery. I had to look close to realize it wasn’t Connery and was puzzled why Noah would be Scottish. The show went downhill from there. I was determined to watch but had to turn the channel after an hour. I don’t care for Roma Downey because of her being so mamsy pamsy but thought with Mark Burnett involved it would at least have decent editing and production but it was a failure for me.
I was so angered that i burned my TV down along with my house and my desktop PC so now I am posting this at the local Christian Owned Coffee Shop ....
History Channel will NOT get my Purity Dammit!!!
There are some movies that you can base a deeper understanding of Theology on.
I’d say “Jesus of Nazareth” was one of these.
There is also non-historical movies that are spiritual like “The Robe” “Moses” or “The Passion of the Christ”.
“The Bible” was not “Jesus of Nazareth” but it was better than a lot of movies that are out there.
I found it engaging.
"Like you said , if it draws just one more person into finding out more than so be it . . ."
No wonder so many people who claim to be Christian are functionally identical to the atheists and agnostics.
People have accepted the idea that the parable about the one lost sheep and the ninety and nine in the fold means it's a good idea to tell the ninety nine it's Ok for them to wonder off on their own and do their own thing because the Good Shepherd is looking for the one lost sheep.
Something that leads to thousands of people having the delusion they're under strengthened isn't good just because there's a chance that it will lead one person to Christ. Of course, if you believe everyone is on the way to heaven anyway, sure, so be it.
Indeed.
While I didn’t expect the characters to be sugar-coated heroic figures like in a Sunday School Story, I was disappointed that there was no character development, and the people depicted didn’t seem to grow or improve as they walked with God. If I had not been a Believer and watched this, I would not have been inspired to become one because of it.
As I said before, this Story has been done, more accurately, and with more inspiring characters, by DeLaurentis and others.
The “Lost Sheep” analogy is a good one! :-)
At least they presented the Creation as a work of God, and didn’t try to shoehorn in some way where they could make it seem like millions of years were compressed into six days.
Also, Moses made a very clear statement as he was looking back at Pharaoh at the Red Sea, when Moses said, “there is only one God, and he is here with us.”
I guess they should have used an ancient Sumerian dialect with Hebrew subtitles........
; )
It was a great big PC groaner. Also soft-pedaling the sin of Sodom. So God obliterated the place because the Sodomites were inhospitable? Really?
I guess they should have used an ancient Sumerian dialect with Hebrew subtitles........
; )
They should have had Scotty Play Noah... "Did ye just call me ark a garbage scow laddy?"
Ahhh - now I understand their point about the Scottish accent - perhaps they would prefer their Noah with a:
North Dakota accent - or a:
Brooklyn accent - or a:
Boston accent - or a:
Georgia accent - or a:
Mexican accent - or a:....
Thank you. I was afraid I was in a tiny minority in noticing the lack of the blue crown!
I have to admit that they did not hit on how cruel Hagar was to Sarah onnce she had the “I birthed your son” and even Abrham y,,
Yeah...they made Hagar look like an innocent victim of Sarah’s evil mean-spiritedness.
Interesting, Since Sarah is considered the Mother of the Jewish People, and Hagar the mother of the Arabs. Just sayin’.
Abram told.Sarai to.deal with her as she saw fit. This lets mebthink that Hagar lorded it over Sarie’s head...
This is dealt with much more “Biblically” in the DeLaurentis miniseries “In The Beginning”.
It was fdone so well before, and ignored. What made the History channel think they could do it better by changing the characters, the story line, and the intent?
I noticed!
For ol’ Baldy-Scarface to enter battle with neither a crown, nor a helmet, nor even a wig was not even in line with the most basic tomb paintings.
Give me Yul Brenner as Pharaoh any day!
So let it be Written, So let it be done.
With respect, the entire Bible is about God's visit to man.
I didn’t See it, Dear FRiend.
A little flumoxed by the ninja angels in Sodom.
Very cool as far as visuals, but the reason angels are pictured as lithe and definitely not buff is to emphasize that the enormous power they have is from God, not themselves.
it wasn’t so bad that I had to shut it off.
So far it has been watchable...lets face it, to protray everything in the bible would be impossible.
we’ll see what the next episode does...
