A study conducted by researchers at the University of Warwick in England found that the suicide rate is 74% higher in nations where 85% or more of the population is Protestant than in nations where 85% or more of the population is Catholic.
Even today, countries that are majority Protestant tend to have substantially higher suicide rates than those which are majority Catholic, suggesting that the relation of religion and suicide remains a vital topic, said researcher Sascha Becker.
When life hits hard, a Catholic can rely on a stronger community which might help him to cope, Becker added. In addition, Protestantism stresses the importance of Gods grace alone and not by any merit of mans own work, whereas Catholicism allows for God's judgment to be affected by mans deeds and sins. As a consequence, committing suicide entails the prospect of foregoing paradise for Catholics but not for Protestants.

Did you ever see, "The Lives of Others"?
I haven’t.
Run, don’t walk, to your local Blockbuster and rent it.
We can all agree on opposing Obama and still debate our differences. The one has nothing to do with the other. Don’t be like liberals who insist everyone must be in lockstep with one another.

This article is pure BS. It is not about "debate" it is about throwing stupid rocks at someone who does not agree with your religious beliefs. That is foreign to the concept of Religious Freedom we have enjoyed in this country since it's founding. Stop this nonsense.

You’re acting like a PC liberal. Religious Freedom in no way prohibits “throwing stupid rocks at someone who does not agree with your religious beliefs” whether you like it or not and whether or not it is actually happening. If the thread bothers you, leave it. If you want to oppose it, fine, post against it. Intelligent, mature people, however, are able to diagree on some things will still agreeing on others. That is the way of the conservative world. Liberals want everyone to agree with them on everything. We are not liberals.
I’ll keep it in mind.. thanks.
How about comparing suicide rates of Protestants vs. Catholics, rather than a composite in individual countries. That would give a better feel for which is the better religion, suicidally speaking, of course.
Bye.
Effects of age and gender on elderly suicide rates in Catholic and Orthodox countries: an inadvertent neglect? Pritchard C, Baldwin D.
Department of Mental Health, University of Southampton, University Department of Psychiatry, Royal South Hants Hospital, Southampton SO14 0YG, UK. Abstract
When compared to suicide rates in the general population, it may be expected that elderly suicide rates would be lower in Catholic and Orthodox societies than in non-Catholic or non-Orthodox countries because of religious affiliations and extended family traditions. National suicide rates in the general population were compared with rates in the sub-population of those aged over 75 years. Proportionately, there are significantly higher suicide rates in elderly men in Catholic and Orthodox countries, compared to rates in other countries, with a trend for similar findings among women. There may be important implications on health and social policy and clinical practice in the efforts to reduce suicide rates among elderly people.

If I,a Catholic, were to notice a posted article titled "Protestants countries have lower fatalities due to strokes" you can darn betcha I'd be wanting to read more about it,wouldn't you?
If it would pique the interest of some country, religion, medical group, university's sociological department or some such entity they might be able to dedicate some money, researchers and resources to expand the study.
Lacking that it's interesting to just bat some ideas around and maybe some individuals may get some insights that will help them in their journey. who knows?
One article does not make a pattern. Repeated such articles do.
Like viewing the pieces of a mosaic, up close it is not clear, if enough pieces are viewed it is seen.
I have had exchanges with the same FR members before. It is always the same, and not productive for them or me.
Guess I should just ignore it.
Not really relevant. There are high rates in the northern countries in general due to longer winters — hence Russia and the Ukraine have a higher rate of suicides than Bulgaria.
tell me about it :)
But hey, that’s what Wodka is for. ;)
Since the USSR has only recently become unshackled from hard core communism and its attendent secular atheism,I would imagine that there is little way to ascertain what religious preferences people are claiming at this point.
Can you shed more light on this subject? Thanks.
It is actually kind of interesting since the link shows the first study done was in Prussia a long time ago. Evidently there were equal numbers of Protestants and Catholics and the results at that time were quite significant. The narrator remarks on it. Not saying the study is or is not relevant but it just may be.
