Tens of thousands wait for hours in freezing temperatures to kiss belt that Christians believe was worn by Jesus' mother

MOSCOW — Braving freezing cold temperatures and ice-covered sidewalks, tens of thousands of Russians stood in line Wednesday to see and kiss a newly arrived relic of the Virgin Mary in Russia's largest Orthodox cathedral.

The Virgin Mary's Cincture, a belt that Christians believe was worn by Jesus' mother, was brought to Russia last month from Mount Athos, a monastic community in Greece.

Kissing the relic, which is encased in an ornamental box, is believed to help barren women conceive and heal other ailments.

The line of people, mostly women, waiting to enter the golden-domed Christ the Savior Cathedral stretched for 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) along the Moscow River despite temperatures that dropped to below minus 5 Celsius (23 Fahrenheit).

CynicalBear says: "Yep, to the only High Priest there is."

"Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects."

So you go to "the Elders of the Church" to confess?

Don’t you have the book of James in your Bible?

Or do you choose to ignore it as you are ignoring the scripture quoted by johngrace?

All I need is a simple answer — Yes, I have the book of James in my Bible.

Or No, I don’t have the book of James in my Bible.

Mind reading? Why? I said what I said. If you want to hate so badly you can claim to read my mind, you need help.

>>Its the grace of Christ which will show the fruits(works) of a Christian otherwise it is useless.<<

Find one time in all these threads that the claim was made that faith and salvation would not produce good works.

It’s interesting that in all the verses you quote the statements are made that show that faith saves but the proof of that faith is what a Christian does after. Yet you decline to either show that or articulate it. Once again it’s proven that works are only a result of being saved and not the cause of it.

Nope. When we show you EXACTLY what the Universal Church teaches and has taught for an unbroken 2,000 years since Our Lord appointed His Apostles the task of “Teaching all the Nations”, you stick your head in the sand and refuse to look. Willful ignorance is NOT going to be an acceptable excuse on Judgment Day.

almost ALL of the worldwide Christian community

That's nothing to brag about..that so many are deceived. "Enter through the narrow gate. For WIDE is the gate and BROAD is the road that leads to DESTRUCTION, and MANY enter through it."

Christians enter the narrow gate that is... One Way, One Truth, One Life. "But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to LIFE, and only a few find it. Matthew 7:14

It's ALL about JESUS! NO ONE ELSE. Catholics and ALL their baggage cannot fit through the narrow gate.

What a strawman. It is not only a belief common to almost all of Christendom today, but has been from the very start.

What odd little cult do you adhere to, or like so many here are you unwilling to identify the denomination that teaches you on Sunday? (You do actually go to Church on Sunday, right?)

I think this argument is mute at times. I have friends who believe like you and do great good for others in Christ. I know Catholics who have Christ without a doubt too. Who give out in the name of Christ too.

You may call it stewardship of grace. I may call it a state of grace. We still believe in Christ. I pray to Christ. I know Christ. We still do it because we love Christ. I still hold Christ so can brothers and sisters who see it from a different angle. I believe we like to split hairs.

Jesus trumps your guy in the pointy hat.

AMEN!

But, CB, you keep forgetting that the guy in the pointy hat wears red shoes and a dress.

“Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.’ And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’ “

This is an apostolic gift for the formation of the church..it is ecclesiastical in nature and speaks to church discipline( excommunication) as we see in the epistles such as 1 Corth..

Clearly the apostles themselves did not understand it OR TEACH it as the roman church does.

Just one more misreading of the scriptures by Rome ...one more way to tie people to them

“Clearly the apostles themselves did not understand it OR TEACH it as the roman church does.”

A few small cults teach that nonsense, but for 2,000 years the VAST majority of Christendom disagrees with those heretical splinter groups.

>>So you go to "the Elders of the Church" to confess?<<

I am the Elder.

1 Peter 5:5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.

We can always tell who is doing things contrary to scripture can’t we.

1 Timothy 3:1 This is a true saying, if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; 3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; 4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;

How risky it would be to belong to a church who doesn’t follow the instruction for what an Elder should be.

We certainly don’t want to follow those who practice what was condemned do we.

1 Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; 3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

Who is it again that “forbids to marry” and says to not eat meat on Friday?

BTW The words used for all leadership positions in the church are all referring to one office in the church. There has never been a hierarchy defined and all churches were autonomous and not officially organized under on earthly organization.

From scripture we can find that all of the leadership of the Catholic Church are not qualified to be in those positions.

LOL And isn’t even qualified to be an Elder in a church because he’s not married and doesn’t have children.

Soooooooooo, which of the tens of thousands of individualized factions within the Vatican Ashteroth-Mary cult (aka the RCC) do you belong to?

When did they start with the assumption of Mary again? How about indulgences, when did that start?
