From the book of Genesis:
Gen 2:18-24
18 The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."
19 Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.
20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh.
22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man."
24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
(NIV)
The scientific basis for this passage is interesting.
Humans [as well as other life forms] are made from carbon molecules. The field of Organic Chemistry is the study mainly of the Carbon atom as well as other atoms that bind to Carbon [such as Hydrogen, Nitrogen, and Oxygen].
But what is Adam's Rib?
Is there a scientific basis for this?
The answer is that what makes a man a man is testerone. What makes a woman a woman is the family of hormones known as estrogens.
The estrogens have one less carbon rib than testerone has.
The chemical formula of testerone is C19H28O2.
The chemical formula of the estrogens is C18H24O2.
Thus estrogens has one less carbon rib than testerone.
Is this the scientific basis of this passage of Genesis?
Possibly. It makes sense.
Carbon compose the bones of living organisms.
Maybe God showed us how we were made in a way we could understand thousands of years ago.
And now we can understand the scientific explanation of the difference between man and woman -- the missing rib, or Adam's rib.
Was this part of Genesis just a symbolic explanation, or was it an explanation that people could understand both thousands of years ago.
Today the human race has a better understanding of science.
Has science finally explained this part of the Bible? Possibly.
I have a saying:
Science shows us the Infinite Perfection of God just as science shows us the Finite Imperfection of the Human Race.
Clearly, God is perfect, but the mankind is able to strive for perfection to be in God's image. The human race can strive for spiritual perfection, such as the Holy People of the Bible, or for material perfection [and the lust for things of this world].
Perhaps that is one of the choices that God has given us: how we chose to strive to be perfect.
Interesting, I’ve studied the word “rib” down to the root and it basically comes out as “curve” so for me this is merely more confirmation of there being more than meets the eye in Genesis.
Something to think about.
Keep the posts coming!
Bump!
What I know for sure is, I'll NEVER be as brilliant as God and make no effort to pretend. I accept that I have finite knowledge and He has infinite knowledge. He is beyond amazing!
How ironic it is that the atheist is as arrogant as ever with the questionable finitie knowledge they possess. As their truth “evolves” their haughtiness does too.Never mind that their previous “truth” that “evolved” is often proved to be false.
If you were to clone yourself, the rib bone marrow would be ideal.
Adam’s rib is his DNA or sometimes called “essence”.
The real trick was getting a mirror image, none of Man’s clonings have been able to do that.
I guess you can make language say anything you want, but since I was a kid, I thought if you took away Adam’s rib and made a woman out of it, Adam would be the one with a missing rib. This says the woman is one rib shy.
Exactly what I picked up on.
As soon as I heard the word clone, I thought of Eve, but knowing God, He would have made her Adam’s exact opposite, not duplicate. :)
Bookmark.
Shoes can talk because they have tongues?
Tables and chairs can walk because they have legs?
You're playing (poorly) with words
Sound’s like God was using cloning techniques.
BTW: Man gave science those terms not, God.
There are many things about what we are told regarding the formation of Adam that strike me as curious. First is the makeup/condition of Adam before the ‘curve’ was removed to make the woman.
One has utterly missed the point, “rib” is an English translation of the Hebraic term for “rib”, the Scripture does not say “rib” it says “curve”.
(6760) Tsala to curve
(6763) tsalah lit of the body, figuratively of a door.
Trying to then shoe horn in thing such as potatoes (which did not exist in the area) or “Tongues” of shoes, both mid 16th century, if not slightly earlier words is somewhat head scratching an effort.
Interesting hypothesis. I thought both M/F have both testosterone and estrogen in different amounts, however.
I always thought the “rib” metaphor was referring to DNA in this way: You can make a human female clone of a male by removing the “Y” chromosome (23rd), and replacing it with an “X” (23rd) from another cell. The clone would then have a pair of “X” (23rd), and be female. You cannot do the opposite (make a male from a female), since females lack a “Y” (23rd) chromosome, which is why this interpretation of this metaphor is interesting to me.
Best wishes...
