Mormons (LDS) Know More About Bible Than Other Christians
The Salt Lake Tribune ^ | 09/28/2010 | Peggy Fletcher Stack

Posted on 09/29/2010 3:05:05 PM PDT by zippythepinhead

Atheists and agnostics know more about major world religions than many people of faith, while Mormons can answer more Bible questions than their Catholic and mainline Protestant counterparts.

Those are among the somewhat startling conclusions about religious literacy in America the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion and Public Life drew after surveying 3,412 Americans.

Some of the multiple-choice questions were relatively simple: Where was Jesus born and who led the exodus from Egypt? What religion was Mother Teresa, what day does the Jewish Sabbath begin and what is the name of Islam’s holy book?

Others were more obscure: What is Indonesia’s dominant religion? Which Christians teach that salvation comes through faith alone?

About half the Protestants (53 percent) couldn’t correctly identify Martin Luther as the person whose writings and actions inspired the Protestant Reformation. Fewer than half of Americans (47 percent) knew the Dalai Lama is Buddhist and only 38 percent correctly associated Vishnu and Shiva with Hinduism.

John Morehead, director of the Western Institute for Intercultural Studies in Salt Lake City, had already noted religious illiteracy in the general population as well as in the evangelical community. But he did not expect Mormons to top them in their biblical fluency.

“Mormons tend to emphasize Mormon scriptures like the Book of Mormon rather than the Bible in their devotional life,” Morehead said in an e-mail.

Even some LDS scholars were surprised to find Mormons at the top.

>>Such nice neighbors....??<<

In a way, yes. OTOH, have you ever seen the “momon inspired” underground society in the movie “A Boy and His Dog”?

Things are not always as they appear. And if you have ever been in a temple (I have) you will know what I mean.

He actually walked 5000 miles to get back to them in winter quarters where he found them half-starved.

>>In the garden of Gethsemane Jesus took upon Hiself all the sins of the world<<

You mean when he said this:

Luke 22:42
“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”

I haven't seen that movie, but I have been to the temple and watched THAT movie (actually, when I went, it wasn't a movie, but a play). I even have the garmies to prove it.

25 What, do ye suppose that mercy can rob justice? I say unto you, Nay; not one whit. If so, God would cease to be God.

"...whit..."????

Origin:

1470–80; perh[aps] an alter[ation] of ME wiht

wiht origin:

From Germanic *wextiz. Cognate with Old Saxon wiht (Dutch wicht), Old High German wiht (German Wicht), Old Norse vættr (exceptional creature), vætr, véttr, or vétr (Danish vætte, Swedish vätte), Gothic (waihts).(ca. 12th c.)

[edit] Noun - wiht (plural wihtu)

creature, person, thing, being

Descendants: English: wight; whit

So here we have another example of a word used in the BoM whose origins can be traced as far back as the 12th century, but no further.

How did such a word come to be used in a book supposedly written hundreds of years earlier and never be known in another language until the Norse, Germanic and Scandinavian cultures came onto the scene?

>>That said Jesus didn’t say to the Thief you’ll be with me in Heaven. He said Paradise. It is safe to conclude that Heaven isn’t Paradise.<< Not really. Here are all occurrences of the word in the KJV: Luk 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise. 2Cr 12:4 How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter. Rev 2:7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God. The Greek word is παράδεισος or "paradeisos" And a rundown of the Greek usage of the word: 1) among the Persians a grand enclosure or preserve, hunting ground, park, shady and well watered, in which wild animals, were kept for the hunt; it was enclosed by walls and furnished with towers for the hunters 2) a garden, pleasure ground a) grove, park 3) the part of Hades which was thought by the later Jews to be the abode of the souls of pious until the resurrection: but some understand this to be a heavenly paradise 4) the upper regions of the heavens. According to the early church Fathers, the paradise in which our first parents dwelt before the fall still exists, neither on the earth or in the heavens, but above and beyond the world 5) heaven Bottom line is that you may be being "too smart by half" on this one. Some words need to just be taken at face value and within the general contemporary vernacular. e.g. "speeding" usually means someone was breaking the speed limit but could mean someone was high on speed. The former usually sums it up, though.

Let me check the BoM maps in the back of my BoM.

....checking....

....looking....

Oh my, there doesn’t appear to be any maps showing me where those cities or any other cities told about in the BoM were.

My family chose to leave Nauvoo after the riots brought about by the religious bigots.

I guess them 'bigots' should NOT have destroyed that printing press!

Polygamy used to be a common practice among Mormons, but the church has officially renounced it.

Sorry GOD;
We KNOW what You told us in D&C 132, but DAMN!, these MEN have made some laws, and we're afraid if we follow YOU, we'll lose all of our stuff; so ADIOS: it was a fun 47 years of an Eternal Covanent!

So often, different sects of Christianity will even shun other sects, because they were the Baptist movement of 1848, instead of the one founded in 1762.

Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump.

I shouted, "Don't do it!"

He said, "Nobody loves me."

I said, "God loves you. Do you believe in God?"

He said, "Yes."

I said, "Are you a Christian or a Jew?"

He said, "A Christian."

I said, "Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?"

He said, "Protestant."

I said, "Me, too! What franchise?"

He said, "Baptist."

I said, "Me, too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?"

He said, "Northern Baptist."

I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?"

He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist."

I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region, or Northern Conservative Baptist Eastern Region?"

He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region." I said, "Me, too!"

I said, "Northern Conservative†Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?"

He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912."

I said, "Die, heretic scum!"

And I pushed him over.

Or if you apply Occam's Razor, it is much more logically explained as an error in the "most correct book of any on earth."

I understand there were quite a few of them.

I wonder if they got them all...

That was it. I like that one. Here is a variation I found:

A man was standing off the edge of the Sydney Harbour Bridge --about to jump. A passer-by tried to talk him down; he asked: "well, are you a Christian?" to which the man answered "yes." He exclaimed: "great, me too; what kind of Christian are you? Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant?" The answer was: "Protestant." "Me too; what kind of Protestant? Anglican, Baptist, Presbyterian, Methodist, Pentecostal?" The man got excited: "me too; are you an initial evidence or a third wave Pentecostal?" "Initial evidence." "Me too; what kind of initial evidence? Are you a AOG, CRC, COC, CCC?" "AOG." Now, he got really excited: "Me too; are you Premillenial, Post Millenial or Amillenial?" The guy on the bridge said: "Amillenial" and with that the passer-by, becoming very angry, screamed: "Die, heretic!" and pushed him off the bridge.

In the garden of Gethsemane Jesus took upon Hiself all the sins of the world
__________________________________________________

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

That was ON THE CROSS

Until then God the Father was with Him..

He was ON THE CROSS when God left Him...

“Father why have you forsaken Me ???”

Jesus who is God knew why...

Jesus never said that in the Garden..God the Father was still with Him...

Jesus the man was just a man who knew that God had laft Him...

God cannot look upon sin and Jesus had taken on all the sin of the world...

He knew this would happen, that God would leave Him...

Just part of the reason He prayed so intenstly to God in the Garden of Gethsemenee...

the horror of what He was facing...

That knowledge that He would be cut off sor even a short time from God the Father whom he had been with for an eternity..

The Word part of God had agreed to this but now as a man He was faced with the moment of truth...

It was about to happen...He couldnt Himself ...He gave His will over to the Father...

What trust He had in the father..the Fathers ability to bring Him through death on the Cross and then resurection...

Placing all the sins of the world and blame for them upon Him..

Paying the price for them ON THE CROSS..

What a tremendous load Jesus carried for us..

But He did it..

The Garden of Gethsemenee was only the place where Jesus the Man made up His mind and surrendered his will to the Father..

He only decided to go through with death ON THE CROSS and being cut off from the Father there...

The Garden of gethsemanee had nothing to do with our redemption..

He could have walked back to the upper room and had coffee and Cheese Cake after He left the Garden...

The work for our salvation had not begun yet...

All that happened was Jesus turned His will over to the Father...

And the Father instructed Him to wait for the soldiers who were coming to arrest Him...

He was in the Garden for a long time...the disciples went to sleep..

Jesus waited for the soldiers to come and take Him to Pilate and for the work of salavation to begin...

That was all done ON THE CROSS...

Until the Cross everything that happened to Jesus that evening and the next day could have happened to anyone..

the stuggle to face horrors, the false condemation, the arrest,

the whipping...the flesh torn in strips from His body till His bones showed...though that whipping had different consequences...through His stripes we WERE healed...

The sufffering and death ON THE CROSS of the LORD Jesus Christ was different than any man had ever gone through before...

No other man had ever known what it was like to spend eternity as God and with God the father...

No other man knew what it was like to be cut off from God as a criminal having nevcer committed a sin..

God the Father would not even look at Him...

No other man had laid down His life and died ON THE CROSS voluntery knowing that it was necessary for Him to do so in order to save a damned world..

No the Garden of Gethsemanee was not the place that Jesus shed His life saving Blood and called out to God the father IT IS FINISHED...

That all happened ON THE CROSS...

However there will always be those who try to corrupt the message of the Gospel that is spelled out in the Bible...

Even the disciples of Jesus had to be rebuked by him for getting ahead of themselves and watering down His message...

Thats all that mormonism doea ...

Make the Gospel message over into something more convenient and useful to them...

The Cross, the Bood, the Power are all gone because they are too yucky and unexplainable..

Thats why Mormonism is not Chrsitianity by any stretch of the imagination..
