I left the Methodist church over the abortion issue in 1990. Reflecting on that, would you believe that as teens in the group I belonged to they brought a hypnotist in for entertainment? I didn't remember it until a few years ago. Some of the kids in the front watching would fall into a trance, and the hypnotist walked over and "waked them up". remember his warning us beforehand that it could happen.
Luckily I wasn't one of them and didn't think anything of it at the time. But it made me feel uncomfortable, and I doubt I ever told my parents about it or what their reaction would have been, think my father would have not have liked that at all, and he wasn't even outwardly religious. Anyone who has the power to put you in a state where you forfeit your free will for no good cause should be suspect imo.
There was a lot more, will leave it at that.
Well the United Christ of Christ-Congregationalists were even a few years ahead of the United Methodist Church or at leas moved left at the same time. Rev. Wright’s church is part of the UCC.
Sweetie, I’ve been an Episcopalian for almost 40 years.
For the last 20 of those years, I’ve hated the national church. the agenda is totally political. they support gay rights, abortion, everything I hate. The woman they elected as head of the church couldn’t even bring herself to support Christianity as being any better than other religions, claiming she didn’t profess to know the mind of God.
I stay because my own local parish is good and I like the people and I’m too old to change. If I quit this church, I’m afraid I would find myself not going to church at all.
We don’t hear this stuff on Sunday. If one didn’t keep up, you’d never know it.
However, my Bible class teacher, a screaming leftist made the following statement two weeks ago. “I’m more afraid of the radical Christians than I am of Muslims.”
I haven’t been back to that class, but will try to go back.
The problem is, I cause a lot of dissension in the class when I speak my mind and I can’t seem to help doing so.
Thank God, you left.
For what it's worth, in the church of Christ, women don't teach in any adult classes or in the worship service.
Here's an article about that from a coC perspective. Since each congregation is autonomous, what you read there may not apply to every single church of Christ assembly but it is what I've found everywhere.
I'll also hasten to add that I visited a Cumberland Presbyterian congregation not too long ago and found it politically Conservative. I think that most churches arising from the Stone-Campbell movement will gravitate toward Conservatism. YMMV.
There are many apostate churches. Not everyone who cries lord, lord is heard. Love God not Baal, who is the lord of nature and self gratification.
Well, I’m not so conservative as to believe it’s wrong for women to be priests or church leaders.
However, we’ve had a woman priest for the last 9 years and it just isn’t working for me.
Nothing wrong with her, she’s a fine woman but ....
So, I really don’t fit in anywhere so I might as well stay where I am.
I can't believe the ignorance that exists on the NCC.
There is no excuse for any conservative to ever attend any NCC "church". To drop one penny in the collection plate is putting their stamp of approval on supporting Democrats' radical agenda.
Find a good Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and you will be happy and comfortable.
The LCMS just elected a new very conservative president.
Amen!
Your locale puts you in Iowa if I'm not mistaken. My work takes me up there frequently (around the axis from Des Moines to Ft. Dodge and over to Waterloo).
What I can't understand is how those otherwise good, salt-of-the-earth people are so danged liberal! I know the Des Moines Register is extremely hard left and is the default paper of record for the entire state. Being from Texas, I get a lot heat up there from many in Iowa. They can't understand why I'm opposed to Obama and his programs, notably his socialist healthcare that he foisted on an unwilling America. They also think we Texans are Neanderthals because of our support for the death penalty.
Maybe it's just the luck of the draw -- but my experience, by and large, is the Iowa has a lot more liberals than it should have given the demographics. Can you please tell me if I've just been running into the wrong folks or is there merit in my observations?
It is wrong for women to be priests or pastors. It’s a huge clue that things are already amiss.
I think it may be some of both. I’d call Iowa a purple state. It’s neither red nor blue but this year it is expected to turn red. We have a lot of Independents.
I went to Harding betwen my Junior and Senior year in HS for a week of Citizenship Seminar. It was a great program. We all got a copy of the little red book of Mao to study. Roger Steinbeck the Dallas Cowboy quarterback was the big ticket speaker. It was alot of fun. Yes alot of Methodist chuch people do NOT know what their hiearchy believes and supports. Add Abortion and gun control to the list full list of lefy organizations. Also very left wing about Israel.
Yes. My daughter still goes there. They do some good things and have had a really nice pastor & wife. She's hurting badly financially, and they pay her to help with the children.
One positive thing was as a child, we did learn a few biblical passages in Sunday School, and it was through those that the seeds of my faith were born and took root eventually.
I do have as my desktop photo a beautiful shot I got of my favorite stained glass window I was able to take there when I was at a wedding, very interesting how that came about as I'd been wanting that for a long time and not sure how I was going to be able to get it.
We go to a medium-to-large sized Church of the Nazarene.
Most folks here in middle-TN are pretty conservative in how they think and live their lives. The pastor is in his mid-30s and, to his credit, steers completely clear of political discussions.
On the other hand, we have a college student going to the nearby Nazarene Bible College (Travecca) in Nashville. They definitely tilt leftward at the college. As a for instance, they have a new ‘Social Justice’ center.
Also, some weeks ago said student came home explaining that the country needs to get back to ‘organic farming. And why did he say such a thing? The school had sponsored a documentary on the subject. I had several points for young grasshopper to ponder: 1. How is this helpful in your studies to become a minister? (since it’s not, you should ignore it.) 2. Did they give any rebuttal to the film to suggest it was only one point-of-view? 3. Did any of the professors there claim to have farming experience of ‘any’ kind that would give weight to their claims? AND 4. My ancestors who came to this area some 150 years ago pursued what one would call ‘organic farming’... do you think they gave it up because they were stupid or had valid reasons for introducing more effective methods?
The Church would be best served by worrying about lost souls...
I am absolutely, positively not poking fun at you in any way. But I did get a chuckle from the malaprop involving Roger Staubach. I have far too many "senior moment" and make frequent mistakes (as my posting history will sadly reveal).
I'll just say that good old #12 was much of a man than a mouse! :-)
and...of course, go Harding Bisons!
:-)

HA HA you are right.
I think that age factor is saving them from the sex thing tearing up the Lutherans.
Drop that comma right before “who” ~ if you don’t, you are kind of getting this one backwards!
