Thank you for saying that.

I’ve been of two minds about doing this. The teacher baits me because he knows I’m conservative and I try to ignore it. Sometimes I snap. I did a real rant last class about muslims and how dangerous they are to Christianity. One person stopped me after class and told me privately that he agreed with me and that one other person did also.

But nobody rose to my defense in class.

This class has about 20 people in it, wonderful people, mostly retired (it’s Tuesday morning) and they are good people whom I love.

I don’t want to ruin the chemistry of the class and I’ve worried about it. Should I not go? Should I go and shut up? Should I go and give my opinion but try to do it in a less passionate manner and with more humor.

Not sure yet.

You are an essential part of the chemistry of the class. If you are having to 'make' yourself go to church or class, you probably need to find a new church home. The more I read what you've written to me and others, I'm beginning to suspect that you are hesitant to go because you are not totally comfortable being yourself and speaking up.

It takes a while before some people can speak up in defense, and they may agree without specifically seem to be defending you. If you keep making a passionate, yet not obnoxious, argument for that which you believe and know is true, somebody may be able to work up the nerve to second you openly.

The fact that people have told you after class that they agree with what you've said tells me that you are doing some good things. You may actually be changing minds as well, but that is harder to tell.

It never hurts to make your argument with a little humor. I always use as much humor as I can without ruining my point, because if you can make someone break a grin, you keep them with you in the course of the discussion.

I pray that all works out, but if you pray and put it in the hands of Our Lord, I know that it will go as He intends.

First - everyone - thank you for your comments. Going to my church, you would never know that the National Church is so far left. I was shocked, and yes, naive. That said, I don’t want to give up the fight. So, I’m not leaving until I talk to the pastor and other members. If my concern falls on “deaf ears”, then we will leave because I can’t allow my tithes to go to such radical views. (They support women’s reproductive health in the health care bill). Can you believe this? It’s like a nightmare! But, altura, my experience and opinion seems to fit yours. Thank you all. I have learned a lot from your comments.

Praying for you. It is possible to lead entire congregations away but it takes a shepherd who wants to lead his flock away or at least a large majority of the congregation who wants to leave. In your case, it could be to a "free" Methodist church.

More likely, you will have to leave on your own. I had to do that and looking back it was actually much easier than I thought. Now that I've had that experience and realize it's much easier than one thought it would be, it will be easier for me to do it the second time.

I have the complete package in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod where I am now. That doesn't mean we're not one pastor away from someone who doesn't "get it". I will not even attend a church if the pastor is a Democrat. That would mean he doesn't "get it".

I would do what you plan to do--go talk to him and if he doesn't see the light, I'm outta there.

Rhetorical. You answered your own question earlier.
