Litany of Humility

Rafael Cardinal Merry del Val

O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.

From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being extolled, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being honored, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being praised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being preferred to others, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being consulted, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being approved, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of being humiliated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being despised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of suffering rebukes, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being calumniated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being forgotten, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being ridiculed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being wronged, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being suspected, Deliver me, Jesus.

That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease,Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be chosen and I set aside, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be praised and I unnoticed, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be preferred to me in everything, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may become holier than I,
provided that I may become
as holy as I should, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

Closing Prayer

Dominicus Gabriel Mariae

O most gracious Lord Jesus:
To redeem an undeserving humanity
You gave up everything you had.

In your mercy, grant us the grace
of despising all things but you
and your love

That we may know the joy
you brought to us
through your dolorous Passion
and Death,

Who live and reign in might and bliss
with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
One God, in everlasting glory.

“May we be delivered from an excessive of love of created things, and stirred from a deficient love of our Redeemer and those whom He has redeemed.

May we rejoice, not so much that we are less than motes of dust, but that we dance in the breeze of God’s spirit and are lit by His light.

To be great, and thought of as great, without Him, is disaster.
To be small and in His Heart, is delight and majesty beyond reckoning.

Now, in His strength, let’s go kick some diabolic butt!”

AMEN! ;-)))))

Kick diabolic butt bump.

I need tea. This letting the dogs out at 3 am is getting old.

Fabulous. Although, you really oughta be able to handle a blackbird with a .22, or there will be nothing left to bake into a pie...

Glad you got a bit more sleep.

If you aren’t already using melatonin...Try some before bed time.

Sleepy Time tea helps too...Tastes better with just a bit of sugar.

Day 15 of the Noxena.

IT seems to me that about the only thing I can do to assist the humility process along, other than pray, is to think of God and to think of others MORE and to think of MOI less.

Thoughts?

I just remember the White Monkey. You know, “Don’t think of the White Monkey,” and of course, it’s impossible to NOT think of the White Monkey.

The best way for me is to forget the humility effort, and to just make a commitment, like, “I’m going to volunteer at the church office.” Even though I could do the secretary’s job a hundred times better, I put myself under her direction, and do whatever scut work she wants done, including cleaning.

Or, My mother needs help, and even though I’m not in such great shape, she figures I can drive up to see her, wait on her hand and foot, including mani-pedis in her condo, changing sheets, cleaning the shower, etc. And doing all that, cheerfully, and with love. And then taking her out to lunch where SHE wants to go.

Or, my big dog is miserable; he’s jealous of all the attention the little dying one is getting, so I make him some scrambled eggs, and groom him for twenty minutes, all the while telling him I love him. Even though my shoulder hurts, I’ve made a commitment to love him the way he needs to be loved.

The whole thing is, don’t worry about humility: study how other people/puppies see love, and provide it as much as possible. When we forget what we want, and cry alone in the night with our prayers, and never tell a soul, but go out every morning and DO SOMETHING for someone else, the way THEY want it done....that’s humility.

And if there’s nobody to help, mow my own grass, trim around the bushes and trees, wash the white fence, paint the porch, shampoo the carpet, pay the bills, clean the closet, shine the shoes.

Humility is praying for someone I despise, and asking God to bless them with everything I want: closeness to Him, plenty of money, good health, the esteem of friends, peace, delicious food, physical comfort.

I do not like humility. But I need humility. Prayers for me to do the right thing, forget the White Monkey, and just try to help without getting in the way.

I don’t even want to think about humility on the RF. I know what it is, and I’ll NEVER get there. God forgive me.

I don’t even want to think about humility on the RF.

I don't find that particularly a problem. The Novena has been a real help, just to keep in mind that none of this really matters - a cat picture is as useful as the best-reasoned post.

It's in real life that I constantly struggle. Do you find yourselves saying, "Why am I the only one who ...?" all the time? The only one who can remember to pay a bill, feed a pet, keep a commitment? I'm sure my husband can't be as helpless at the office as he is in the rest of life, or he'd be unemployed! "I forgot ..." Well, FReep, we've had the FReepin' lizards that YOU bought for two FReepin' years, and they have to be fed every day. Need a brain transplant? I can give you some ...

White monkey ...

When I do firearms instruction ... the usual line is keep your finger OFF the trigger until you mean to fire.

Keeping your finger off something is a LOT harder than putting it ON something.

I always say to lay your trigger finger along the slide (or barrel if it’s a revolver) until you mean to fire. That’s way easier to do.

So, seems to me, it’s easier to put your mind on God, on your job, on your neighbor than it is to keep it off yourself.

But that’s not important - it’s the Outside World that really counts. Sigh.

As one looking up from a hole might deduce that all that light up there suggests a bright and light-shedding body, so I deduce that humility might enable one to delight in one's own good works (the works God does in/through one) no less (and no more) than in the good works of another.

What a burden this vanity is!
