STRASBOURG, France, JUNE 1, 2010 (Zenit.org).- The "crucifix trial" in the European Court of Human Rights has given rise to an unprecedented intervention of 10 member States as third parties.
The European Centre for Law and Justice, which was also authorized to become a third party in the court hearing regarding the legitimacy of displaying crucifixes in Italian schools, reported today that ten other States will have this amicus curiae status in the "Lautsi vs. Italy" case.
This case was referred to the Grand Chamber when the Italian government appealed a decision issued by the Second Section of the court last November, which spoke against the presence of the crucifix in classrooms.
These States, all of which are supporting Italy in the desire to overturn last November's decision, include: Armenia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Lithuania, Malta, Monaco, San-Marino, Romania, and The Russian Federation.
The third party status allows the States to submit to the court their written and oral observations as official parties to the case.
The court's Grand Chamber will hold a public hearing on June 30, and the final judgment on the case is expected by the end of the year.

hmmmmm
Catholic ping!
Good to see Christians finally sticking together on the defense of common values.
Russia being involved will add a lot of weight to this idea.
God bless all of them!
Armenia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Lithuania, Malta, Monaco, San-Marino, Romania, and The Russian Federation
All the biggies, huh?
Italy, my maternal ancestral homeland, has publicly funded, legal abortions in the first trimester (and in cases where the mother’s health is at stake), and a mass attendance rate of about 30%. However, since the current governing coalition includes ex-Christian Democrats (most of whom were absorbed into FI and the Lega Nord), I’m not surprised that they are doing this.
Well, let’s see, no Ireland, Germany (okay, Bavaria), France, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Czech Republic, etc. As Archbishop Carlson said to the newly ordained priests on Saturday (actually in the middle of the ceremony) “we are sending you out to preach the gospel in a world that isn’t Christian.” Good to see some countries at least fighting the world to preserve it.
Portugal just legalized gay marriage (with the President, a member of the Catholic Social Democrats signing it into law), and Spain did the same two years ago (albeit under a socialist government).
Of these, those that are members of the European Communion should very seriously consider leaving, preferably bankrupting the fat cats in the process, and those that are not members should hang their quisling politicians on lanterns before they are bullied into joining. The EU is the new USSR.
Some coalition. Let's just say it's a joke, or better yet a "mind over matter" thing, like the European union doesn't mind and they don't matter type. In short, they have no clout.
Four out of ten are not member states, and one is not even a European country: Russia, Armenia, Monaco, and San Marino. Bulgaria and Romania (former east Block countries) just became member states.
Monaco, Malta and San Marino can be best described as micro states. Monaco has an area of 0.76 square miles (that would be a square measuring 0.87 by 0.87 miles!). With a brisk walk you could cross the whole "country" in a matter of 15 minutes or less. It has an estimated 33,000 citizens. Only the Vatican is smaller area-wise.
San Marino (located inside Italy just like the Vatican), is a statelet with an area of 24 sq miles (a square measuring 4.9 by 4.9 miles), and a population of about 30,000 souls.
Malta is a "giant" in this Lilliput club. It's an island with an area of 121 sq. miles (a square measuring 11 by 11 miles, or 151 times, area wise, than Monaco!), and a population of about 414,000 mostly ethnic Maltese.
Bulgaria and Romania are former Warsaw Pact countries with insignificant economy, or influence.
Greece is an economic basket case that had to be bailed out in order not to declare bankruptcy and is hardly in the position to demand anything from the European Union.
Armenia is a former Soviet Republic, that is not only outside the EU but is not even a European country!
Of all the memebr coutnries (not counting Italy) with strong Catholic cultures, such as Poland, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Hungary, Slovenia and France, none has joined this coalition.
Croatia, an EU applicant country, is as Catholic as it gets, but decided to stay out of this I supposenin hopes of not hurting its chances of becoming a member.
Serbia, a country experiencing the Orthodox revival as Russia is, currently under a Yeltsyn-like servile pro western regime, decided to let its traditional Orthodox friends (Russia, Greece and Cyprous) down on this one, in order to cozy up to the godless EU.
In short, if it weren't tragic, mentioning this ten-country coalition would be embarrassing.
Hasn’t been mentioned yet, but 5 of the 10 states: Armenia, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Romania, and The Russian Federation suffered under atheistic Communism. And of those 4 suffered under Islam.
Aren’t France and Ireland supposed to be “Catholic” countries?
Maybe they should all just roll over and die...../S
France ceased to be Catholic when the demonically inspired Revolution murdered the king and slaughtered the clergy.
