A July Zogby poll showed that Obama was leading among Catholics by 11 points. He is now trailing by 15. The link above is to the article in the main section of FR, but I thought this poll detail was worthy of discussion in the Religion section.
Such a massive rejection of a Democratic nominee is striking since Catholics come from heavily Democratic regions of the country, where huge majorities of non-Christians and Protestants vote overwhelmingly Democratic, and both traditional news outlets and political infrastructures are far to the left. (Catholics are the quintessential "Reagan Democrats.")
Republican VP from PA, not a lot to choose from. Santorum badly damaged goods. Arlen sick looking and too left anyway. Ridge looks the part, but I guess that ain’t enough.
**Santorum badly damaged goods. **
So sad, because he is so pro-life.

I think it’s likely because those Catholics finally got full information about Obama’s enthusiastic support of abortion, for any reason whatsoever, at any stage of pregnancy, AND with government funding. Until a few months ago, all most folks ever heard of Obama was the adulation coming from the MSM. Now there is much more being brought to light, and folks who might have though they’d vote for him earlier are seeing him for who he really is, and they aren’t liking what they see.
These polls of Catholics are always a little problematic. Many self-identified Catholics, especially in the northeast, have not been inside a church in years.
Churchgoing Catholics tend to be more conservative than their lapsed brethren.
Good point: Church-going Catholics vote heavily Republican; as Republican as “religious right” Protestant denominations, which is amazing because such denominations are often formed of people who specifically rejected the liberalism of mainline Protestantism.
I’m Catholic, and it’s good to see that some other Catholics are finally finding out that NObama is pro-Abortion. NObama should get ZERO Catholic votes (and really ZERO Christian votes) based on his abortion stance. How can a Christian vote for NObama and his Pro-Abortion stance? How is this even possible???
My question is this: Why, with his record, did he ever have support from Catholics???
I believe that elections over some 30-40 yrs the winner has had the catholic vote.
When you consider that Hispanics are nearly 100% Catholic or Evangelical, and are strongly pro-Obama (except for the Cubans), McCain’s lead among non-Hispanic Catholics must be very large.
From a thread about the 2004 election results:
An important division exists between white and minority Catholics, particularly Hispanic Catholics. While they are a swing group overall, white Catholics voted decidedly for George W. Bush in 2004, 56 percent to 43 percent, and Hispanic Catholics strongly supported John Kerry, voting 65 percent to 33 percent in his favor. In this year's exit poll, Hispanics made up 17 percent of Catholics, a jump of 4 percent from 2000. It will be interesting to see if this rift deepens over time as the makeup of the American Catholic church continues to change.
Very good poster:)
If Kaine or another "pro-life Catholic Democrat" is selected (I don't believe that a true pro-life Catholic Democrat could be selected), this parallel needs to be pointed out gratuitously.
This must be done especially in states like PA; if that is pointed out, it might even work, because the people of those states have been burned once already by faux-pro-life Dems.
(I'm still sore over Casey)
It's very well done and can be used anywhere.
Any Christian, any decent human, that reads these would have to side with McCain over Obama.
You can ask that question across the board.
Why, with his record, did he ever have support from Protestants? Jews? (skip Muslims...we know why he has support there)
The articles I read said Kaine is an ex-Catholic.
There is NOTHING appealing about Obama for Catholics who take the issues seriously. He is one of the most ethically and theologically confused candidates in recent times. But the estrangement is also cultural and stylistic. Catholic Democrats have seen what happens when radical policies come to their neighborhoods. A candidate perceived as whooping things up is not going to do as well as McCain with his low-key demeanor. But Obama's abortionism will hurt him with the Catholic vote, perhaps enough in states like Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan to tilt the election.
The Dems NEVER get this. They just don't get it. They try to crossdress as believers but still have a culture gap here.
i certainly hope so, he’s the most pro-abortion candidate ever to run for the presidency.
