A July Zogby poll showed that Obama was leading among Catholics by 11 points. He is now trailing by 15. The link above is to the article in the main section of FR, but I thought this poll detail was worthy of discussion in the Religion section.
Such a massive rejection of a Democratic nominee is striking since Catholics come from heavily Democratic regions of the country, where huge majorities of non-Christians and Protestants vote overwhelmingly Democratic, and both traditional news outlets and political infrastructures are far to the left. (Catholics are the quintessential "Reagan Democrats.")
Perhaps this is why Tim Kaine, a Catholic, is so high on Obama’s short list of VP possibles?

Possibly, but I think that has more to do with Virginia’s electoral votes.
I mean, I am all for good news, but how is a decline of that magnitude in such a short time even possible? This poll smells of manipulation to me, albeit pro-McCain manipulation. After all, pollsters need the election to be close, otherwise no one will pay money to get access to their polls. 26 pts is just too much of a swing to be plausible.
I think the news of the August 26th pro-abortion “gala” to be attended by Michelle Obama and Hillary was the deal breaker. It was just announced last Friday. Too many cannot overlook this and are wavering in their support of Obama.
Catholics probably don’t think to much of Obama’s RADICAL abortion views including letting a baby die if it survives a late-term abortion.
Among the entire national audience, 26 points is too big of a swing to believe. Among a swing voter block, it is quite credible. As a group, Catholics are liberal on economic matters, conservative on social matters, and patriotic on foreign-affairs matters. That makes them a swing voter block.
That’s right...another CINO...Mr. Kaine is a pro-choice guy.
Anybody who votes for Obama, and is a practicing Catholic, will have to go to confession right away. Obama is an adamant supporter of abortion, and any Catholic who votes for someone like that will have a mortal sin on his or her soul.
Maybe it’s because the “Messiah” stands for everything that the Catholic Church rejects.
i take it that McCain potentially selecting Tom Ridge as VP to help win Pennsy would not be warmly received then?
I don't disagree, but Kaine has to bring more than VA into play. He speaks Spanish too. Bayh is Episcopalian. Obama needs Catholic support in OH & MI. Kaine is way light on experience. I've watched his entire political career from Richmond city council onward. But with Obama, fitness to step into the role of president is not a consideration. If it were, Obama himself wouldn't be running. Whomever BHO puts on the ticket will be there solely for electability reasons.
McCain should pick Cantor and take Virginia and Florida and balance his ticket with a 100% Conservative.
I don’t think he would be warmly received, however I’m not sure the typical voter would know about his pro-choice stance whereas the typical Catholic voter most likely would.

I don’t think I could imagine a more disastrous move. I think Catholics tolerate some degree of social liberalism in Giuliani as mayor of New York because he’s more conservative than anyone else they’d ever get as mayor and the mayor of New York isn’t going to have any pull, for instance, in overturning Roe-v-Wade. But Ridge would be a gratuitous slap in the face, like Judge Myers. (And don’t think it’s a coincidence that Bush’s 2nd pick was Catholic!)

Kaine did well with Catholic voters in Northern Virginia by appearing to be pro-life (like Landrieu and Casey Jr.), and because his Democratic predecessor had avoided social issues while being infinitely more competent of a politician than his RINO Republican predecessor, Gov. Gilmore. Gilmore inflated the size of government so hugely that Gov. Warner was able to get Virginia out of its fiscal crisis without raising taxes much.

And Catholics are changing. Many of these old-timer FDR lovers are passing on. And in their place we have a whole new generation of CONSERVATIVE Catholics.
